: How to get over leaving your car unattended.

I recently just got a new 06 Honda civic which is my first car, anyways I notice that I get really paranoid when I'm leaving my car in the parking lot or when I'm sitting in the car and some pulls up next to me lol I know I'm probably acting like a retard. I'm I the only one that does this? I used to make fun of my dad for always taking so long to park now I realize I'm the same way trying to avoid parking next to people cars and don't look like they care what happens to there doors and such. Is this just a phase new owners go through or I'm I just over dramatic???

Thought I'd give an example of something that happen, a lady parked next to me today and when she got out i thought it sounded like she hit my door but she said she didn't and I looked and there wasn't any damage but I took her plate down just incase.

if ur so paranoid, buy a beater. park it sideways, on the line, upside down, all you want, and the best part is, you wont be paranoid.

and if that isnt your cup: DONT DRIVE

your dad fucked with your head.

even if some asshole dings your car, it's not like you can REALLY do anything about it anyways, besides if you got some muscle of you you can beat their ass. But law-wise, nobody gives a fuck about the tiny ding in your door, they are called parking lot dings for a reason. Hit em back if they hit you with their car. Better yet, carry a gun, and fucking shoot yourself when it happens then you wont need to worry anymore.

i get worried as shit when i park my car on the streets. i got backed into 5 times in one year and one of the 5 happened today!@!@! i can't really blame them though since my car is pretty hard to spot when you're in an suv...sigh...

Who's the ignorant douche that said its just a civic? Give the guy a break its his FIRST CAR. Sure its not $50,000, not all of us have that kinda cash to wipe our asses with.

Anyway, op its not just you. When I first got my car I didnt like having it out of my sight.
I'm still paranoid with parking next to people. Whenever I go out I always take the extra few mins to find a spot far away from others, or find a larger spot so the ppl that dont give a shit have tons of space to be dicks about opening their doors.

if your car is a dd, be prepared for dings scratches and dents. also, its a civic, people generally buy them so they dont have to give a shit about things like this.

I'm like that too. I always try to park in a slot that only has one adjacent slot so there's less chance of getting hit. Also park away from other cars etc.

I've been dinged already and it sucked at first but I got used to it. Its especially bad if its your FIRST CAR and its never been hit yet.

Agreed. When I first got a car, I was always excited to look at it, and whenever I parked it I tried to find a space with no cars beside it. After a while I got a few dings... not very happy about them but it's life.

Same, I've got a couple little dings on my passenger side, one of which I acquired at last year's revscene spring meet (ironically)
Sure I hate seeing them but they're there now. However i still try my best to avoid getting more

Dings are normal. Learn to deal with it.

The only reason why you should be paranoid about your car is if you're afraid of it getting stolen, or you have a really expensive paintjob. The car is stock. Just give yourself ample room and lock the doors.

IMO an '06 Civic is a pretty good first car. Mine was 12 years old by the time I got it. hahaha

As stated, it's gonna get dinged, scuffed chipped, etc. - not a lot you can do about it. Enjoy the car and take care of it as best you can.

Now if it's theft/vandalism you're worried about, go get yourself a paging alarm.

J____
02-16-2010, 10:36 PM
the solution for your paranoia is: go get a few dings. after your 5th one, you just wont care anymore and you can live a happy life. Seriously, even to filler + repaint your door is worth less than the frustration you'll suffer thinking about it. Worse comes to worse, repaint ur doors every year. But go get a few dings and it wont bug you anymore. You must have OCD. haha

02-16-2010, 10:36 PM
Minor dings and scratches on a civic isn't going to affect the resale value whatsoever on a civic. The types of people who buy those cars second hand are those that can care two shits about it because they are going to be using it as their DD. Only when you get into the 50k+ cars people start caring about dings/scratches etc and even then it's not going to be a deal breaker as long as you have proper maintenance records.

It's just a civic, not a Ferrari pal. Calm down.

if your parked there is always a chance for it to get dinged... if you want your car to not get scratched then stay home... its the only way you'll guaranty that no one will touch your car.

I'm super paranoid about my car too, it may be a little $500 piece, but I love it and I would hate it if it got stolen. So I can understand why you'd be nervous. It gets better with time. I'm not as nervous now that I've had it for almost a year.

Everyones just hating on the fact that it's a civic sorry my mommy and daddy didn't go buy me a Benz or BMW when I graded. This is my first ride Im excited and I just don't want it getting banged up but it's something I'll oviously get over after the first couple dings. Just because I don't drive a 50,000 plus ride doesn't mean I don't give a shit about my car.

Nobody cares that you drive a Civic.

Fact of the matter is, it's commonplace for ANY CAR.

I know exactly what you mean. I was paranoid like crazy first couple weeks I took my car to school but it gets better over time. Even now sometimes if I think someone might have parked too close to me so I keep thinking about it in class or where ever and I've even moved it during the day just because I was paranoid i'm gonna get a ding.

Like many people said... It's only a civic. Who cares.
If anything, you can fix your dings for $100 by professionals.
Just invest in $100, do it at the end of every year. Fixed!

02-17-2010, 01:55 AM
I was like that too when I got my 1st car, but not so much anymore, despite the fact that my current car is more expensive than my 1st car. However, these things are inevitable. Just take note of what cars are parked beside yours and picture yourself getting out of those cars... are their doors likely to ding your own car?
For me, I have more rock chips than door dings so I worry about those more... Mitsubishi paint sucks! :(

I know it is your first car but there is nothing you can do, so just deal with it. Enjoy the car.

Better things to worry about.

I can come key your car to take that initial rock off your chest if you want?

+1 to that. Never happened to me yet but I know that if it does, all the dings + rock chips + all the minor damages to a car will be nothing compared to seeing your bike on the ground.

But i know how op feels. When i first got my car I couldn't leave it out of my sight. I would park super far just to try to avoid getting dinged.

The most annoying thing is parking your car super far with 100's of spots around you and coming back to your vehicle and seeing cars parked beside you lol.

Door dings and minor scratches can be very easily fixed. People who specialize in fixing door dings will charge about $100 for a few hours of work and can make your car look new. I wouldn't worry about anything minor like that at all. I was a contractor for the used-car industry before, and you wouldn't believe what they could do in detail. They can turn a dinged out car with minor bumper scratches look new for less than a couple of hundred dollars.

im still paranoid when i leave my car, apparently its incredibly easy to break into aswell
i remember i locked my keys in my car at g5 and the one guy got a coat hanger and opened my door in about 10 seconds.
but yea every time i wash my car now i find new dings etc, ive kinda got used to it but it still bugs me, just wait till your car gets hit. And i actaully do write down plate numbers if I parallel into a tight space, ya never know who's on the road these days

quasi
02-17-2010, 09:33 PM
When I bought my first new car I was the same, didn't really care so much with the bunch of used cars before that. I still drive new vehicles but now there trucks and I don't really care. People who ding other peoples doors are the retards I can honestly say I've never hit anyones door in the 18 years I've been driving. How hard is it for someone to put their hand between their door and the car next to them if it's a tight spot.

To the OP, with time you won't be so paranoid.

Whenever you own a car there's the initial honeymoon phase that lasts a couple of months. Get over that, get a few dings, and then you'll be a lot less anxious leaving your car alone.

Watch where you park, find spots that will be out of the way or hard to get into. Take advantage of other driver's innate laziness. Other than that, it is out of your hands.

Compustar 2 way paging remote than if someone dings your car you can go see who it was. But ya when I got my first car I was paranoid as well and my car was a civic as well. Just because its a civic doesnt mean that it doesnt hurt just as much if you get a ding. But you will get over it like everyone said after the first few dings you wont care to much anymore.

I don't get why some of you are saying it's just a Civic...
I remember when I had my '94 Ford Tempo in high school. It wasn't anything special so I wasn't paranoid, but I still cared about it.

I do the same things with my new car as when I had the Tempo. Park next to walls, last stall in the lot or the widest one I can find.

Don't get a Compustar, it'll make you even more paranoid. I can't tell you how many times the shock sensor went off while I was at a dinner and my pager went off. Conversations stop dead in it's track and I look out the nearest window.

Actually what I try to do is park in spaces where the adjacent cars have their passenger doors facing my spot. I figure the chances of a car having 2 people (driver + passenger) riding on any given day is lower than the chances of 1 (driver only). Of course this only applies if there's more than 1 space to choose from. You just have to hope for the best.

Dings/scratches/gouges are an unfortunate but expected part of driving. Don't worry, it'll stop hurting after the 1st time. ;)

im not too sure about that one cuz when i drive people around, i tend to avoid dings being the driver but my passengers don't even know about dinging others when they leave my car. I've seen passengers do dings moreso than drivers..

it's kind of the eye for an eye situation. driver of car A won't ding car B and driver of car B won't ding car A.

oh and alarms really are useless, if it's a cheap one it won't do shit, a 2 way you won't get there fast enough anyways, if someone really wants to steal your car they'll flatbed it or bypass the alarm easily, and if it's a smash and grab, well again their gone before you can get there.
