Was it really that good? This place has been around since my family 1st came to canada so it was a shame that it got torn down before I got to sample their wares but its good to know that the name and burgers continue to live on.
Someone let me know if its just like the original then I will have to go and try it

The Korean owners killed that place. Once they took over, the only decent thing on the menu were the onion rings. Their burger patties were from Costco for fucks sake.
I grew up around nearby (went to Norquay) and my friends and I used to spend our allowances there and at the arcade in the laundromat across the street.

Just bought one, $10.25 for a Deluxe Chuck Wagon Combo w/ Mushrooms.
EDIT:
So, I'm just finishing up my meal. And here are my thoughts, bare with me since I'm no food critic. I'm too young to know the good ol' days of Wallys but I am old enough to remember my dad taking me there after school and he would order take out while I play on the pinball machine in the corner.
Burger- Definitely how I remembered it. It may be slightly smaller than before, but maybe that's cause I'm older now. Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, sauce, two patties, and I added mushrooms. Still very good, and sloppy!
Fries- So the combo for the fries and drink cost an extra $3 (i believe, regular price fries were $4 and I forgot how much a fountain drink was), anyways the fries IMO are not worth it. Although it's a pretty big bag, the fries tasted and felt like old cold fries. I tried the fries the second I picked up my food, so it's not because it got cold on my way home. Like the middle of the fries are a bit lumpy, I don't really know how to describe them. But I wouldn't buy them for $4.
Drink- Was just a normal fountain drink. They only have 3 drinks right now (they also have bottled pop/water/etc), Coke, Sprite, and the last I forgot but probably Ice Tea?
One thing I did not like was the 10 min wait for my meal, this could have accounted for my fries being so crappy though. And it's not like it was that busy in there. Only one other couple waiting for their food, and an old lady that went to the counter to ask when her burger would be done. It's like they make one burger at a time, lol. And it shouldn't be lack of staff because there was like 4-6 people working in the kitchen while the Wife (co-owner) was at the counter.
Overall, I'd give it a 7/10. But that's just from my experience today.

Hey guys, I'm back from Wally's Burgers.
I'll provide a quick summary on the burger joint in itself. I'll get into the details if you folks want to go that far.
1. Overall Atmosphere
The burger joint in itself is located in a small strip mall so it is expected that the dining area will be small. It was full of old-timers and retirees who grew up going to Wally's. Seating is limited to only the counters on the wall and window with stools which were rather comfortable. The staff in the front are very friendly and follow up with you once you're done. There were kids in the back (children of the owners I assume) who cook and prepare your orders. The location is still new so a customer washroom is still in progress. They have an iPod playing some old skool music beyond my time.
2. Menu
Same ol' menu with maybe a few new additions. Prices are decent/reasonable for burgers. It's the add-ons that can get expensive (i.e. mushrooms/fried egg/bacon etc.) My lady friend wanted to try their milkshakes but they were sold out (at 1pm!) :o
3. Food
You know what? I hate to say this but if you love Vera's (or any gourmet burger joint) this isn't for you. They use very generic beef patties, shredded lettuce (I hate that) fresh tomatoes and diced onions (I prefer the onions sliced into ringlets.) I ordered the Deluxe Chuck Wagon (2 patties, lettuce, tomato, onions) with a fried egg and mushrooms. The egg and mushrooms were awesome - some of the best I've had and I wish I could lie, but overall, the burger was huge and alright for what I paid. The portions of the fries were huge. I could not finish it. Pop was nothing special - just fountain pop with no ice. The two combos came to $21 even.

All in all, I would score this a 7.5 out of 10. It ain't no gourmet burger and you don't pay gourmet prices. Next time, I'll get only just the burger and call it a day. Would I go back? Yeah. I think I would. But if you're a burger snob, don't bother. :)

just went to splitz grill for the first time, and stupidly said 'yes!' to everyhting the waitress said to add on. ended up costing over $20 for 1 fuckign combo :/ and the onion rings were crappy, and the burger was worse than red robins for sure.

Splitz is one of the better burger joints in my books (I will go out of my way to eat here than at Vera's.) You just have to be careful as to what you order but personally, I would only order the burger alone. Seems like you had a bad experience. I would give Splitz another try.

Gawd dammit that is one sexy looking burger...
If its not messy, its not a Wallys burger.
Waiting for 10 minutes for Wallys is standard....
Cold limpy fries is definitely NOT the norm. I would have complained.
Koreans didnt kill Wally's.. thats balogne...
They just couldnt keep up to the 5 dollar meals from the fast food chains.
Good burgers are not cheap. If you want to spend $5.00 on a combo. Stick with Burger King and Mcdonalds. Im not knocking Burger King or Mcdonalds.. they are great burgers as well.
I actually wouldnt call their patties standard, its tough finding a thinner patty like Wallys.
Any other burger place, whether it be Veras, Fat Burger, Burgers Etc, Splitz Grill.
They all seem to use the standard thick patties. The thicker ones tend to be drier texture.
Albeit most other burger joints seasoning is WAY WAY better than Wallys Patties.
The bun is also not standard. Its got the perfect thickness and VERY VERY light. Just enough bread IMO. Nothing worse than an oversize thick bun. You will not find this unique chuck wagon bun anywhere else. Its exclusive to Wallys.
Special sauce is unique to Wallys as well.
Im a burger hound.... or burger aficionados some like to say... I love all types of burgers... My fav is defintitely Wallys. Although Splitz is a great contendor.
Its been a long winter without Wally's.. especially when we were frequently at Cates Park enjoying a good ol burger in the summer.
Gord the owner kept promising us he would open a Wally's in Vancouver. He finally delivered...
Welcome back Wally's.

Im not sure how I failed here.
I concur.... Floats were the bomb...
If you get an overcooked burger or "burnt" burger. Send it back. Tell them to make another one thats not burnt.
Im fairly sure... the choice of cooking burgers is not burnt burgers.
I myself have never had a burnt burger at Wally's. I would be the first to send it back if it was.

Well, apparently, at least 3 of us on this thread agree that the quality sucked after they took it over. "A true Wally's fan" as you put it, wouldn't accept the sub-par quality that was put out from the mid-90's until they closed - that's why I stopped going.
As far as I'm concerned, the restaurant died after that and again when that location closed permanently. Memories of the food, car shows, interactions, and it being part of my childhood will remain.
Either way, I'll be going to this new place and see what they have to offer but as far as I'm concerned, aside from the name outside and the name of some of the food, this is just another burger joint to check out.

It opened on the 23rd after months and months of waiting for inspection and for the OK from what the owner told me when he bought stuff from my workplace. Now to try that sloppy burger.

Fat Burger is nothing but hype, if that.
I'm glad to see that Wally's is back in East Van. I had my first Wally's when I was 8 years old, 19 years ago. I have to agree with most of you, it went downhill when the Korean owners took over. Though I think they only started using the Costco patties near the end, when they were getting busy with people wanting one last burger. I'm definitely making a trip down within the next few days.

May I ask what burger you have been eating then? If you go to Mcdonalds and buy the burger alone they easily get into the $4 - $5 range after taxes and the same goes for the rest. Perhaps your used to $1.39 burgers off the Wendys value menu or 2 for $3 mama burgers but $5 is pretty normal.

02-28-2010, 11:26 AM
I've been following the thread since I last posted. I've come to some conclusions of my own in which for the price of their burgers, they really aren't bad especially for the price.
For arguement's sake, let's just choose a deluxe wally burger with mushrooms and fried egg. That in itself is in the range of ~5-6$. After finishing the burger, I would be pretty satisfied and full. I would pass on the pop and fries altogether.
Some may argue that they're Costco patties. I beg to differ. I went to Costco several times throughout the week by chance and took a look at their frozen beef patties. They don't sell anything even remotely close to what they serve at Wally's. I believe SlySi is right in which their buns and beef patties are unique to the business. Never have I seen a burger with such intricate buns nor beef patties. Sure, we could make a better burger at home. I won't argue that but the amount of time and effort it takes to make a burger of such calibre and beyond is not worth it for some people. I remember when the Koreans were running the show and definitely the beef patties were from Costco. But not this time around.
Despite the fact that they may not be up to par to gourmet burger joints such as Vera's and Splitz, they seem to have a different appeal altogether by offering a simple, rather nostalgic burger to people of all ages. You don't need to be a Yaletown Yuppie to enjoy a Vera's nor do you have to be a Main Street Hipster to hit up Splitz. Wally's is just a burger joint where everyone of every age and stature can go to have a great burger which brings back memories. :)
ya.. those fast food usually came to be around $6 with drink/fries.
so wally's burger seems a bit more to me, but ya.. I agreed with you that would be normal as they brought back many people old memories and the taste of wally's burger.. so there are demand for it. I wonder if they would make scrambled egg instead of fried egg if you request.. lol... just suddenly came out of my mind of this question.

That's probably the only time it was happening. More so when it was close to the end when it was getting busy. They simply couldn't keep up with the demand and to speed things up they started grilling frozen Costco patties.

To clarify my earlier posts. I was only writing about personal experiences. The last time I went (old Kingsway location) they were using Costco patties. I went to Wally's Burger today and the place looks really nice. bcrdukes pretty much covered it all in his post so I'll add onto it. I ordered a Deluxe Wagon with fried egg and mushrooms. The burger itself was really good. I don't know if it was the sauce, the egg, or the mushrooms, but it was goooood. The patty was nothing special, but I could sure taste the difference from any other burger joints I have tried. And as noots mentioned, Wally's is far better than FatBurgers.

The fries - it comes in a huge bag full of fries, but was nothing spectacular, really soggy. It came salted but the fries were something like McCain's or something.
The drink with the combo is a small cup.
For an extra $4 for the combo, I'd save those $4 towards your next burger.

The fries seem to be one of the consistent complaints. Back when it was on Kingsway, after you received your order, you'd have to let the nuclear-hot fries cool down a bit. Otherwise, you'd get a nice grease burn on your lip/mouth. These new fries sound like crap. Has anyone gotten good fries from there yet?

Deluxe Chuck Wagon with cheese is the classic..
Start with that, and venture off adding mushrooms, or egg...
It gets pretty hefty after mushrooms and egg...
Iv seen people add an extra patty and hot dog in there before..
Insane...

How is the egg supposed to be done?
I had one last night, and the egg was fully fried. meaning the yolk was solid, i thought i read somewhere that the yolk was semi-runny or like over medium atleast.
The onion rings werent that good either. Not crispy, kinda mushy and soft. Also the dipping sauce they give you, it looks like some chipotle mayo stuff, its really watery.

The egg should be over easy. They messed up your egg.
The dipping sauce is new and comes with the onion rings.
I agree. Its a horrible dipping sauce.
Onion rings now are ok.. I miss the originals.... Plenty of batter and next to zero onion. Those were the originals.
The cooks there are fairly new.. There is quite a bit of inconsistency with the way the burger is cooked right now. Which is unfortunate.

Me and my friend went there today again. The onion rings were AWESOME. Really crisp and best part, fresh. Can't vouch on the sauce as we did not bother.
I'm gonna have to stop adding either the egg or mushrooms. Every bite I took out of my burger it would just keep leaking out lettuce or mushrooms. :haha::haha:

Did you manage to finish yours? How was the add-on weiner?

Had a combo burger yesterday.
While it was decent, it didn't quite taste the same. I couldn't see if the grill they were using was the one from the original location. Big Fail if the new owner bought a new grill, since the decades of grease buildup on the old grill is what gives the burgers their taste. I'm definitely going to give it a shot again, though.
There were quite a few people working in the kitchen. I guess they're mass training.

When I went last week, I got the regular Chuck Wagon (no L/T) w/ fried egg and a side of rings.
Both tasted great, egg wasn't over-done and the rings were fresh and crisp. The only drawback was the sauce that came with the rings - somewhat bland, needed more of a kick.

So I went to Wally's for lunch today and got myself the Deluxe Wally burger - as is and asked them to go easy on the sauce.
That was one heck of an awesome burger. So simple, yet so satisfying and delicious. Sorry, I did not take photos as the burger was just too awesome - a $3.50 worth of awesomeness. Super soft and doughy bun, fresh lettuce, tomatos, onions, and the beef patty - MMMMMMMmmmmmMmMm! :D

Do the burgers come with some sort of special sauce? mayo?
didnt like it.
the only good thing was the yam fries.
orderd the chuck wagon burger, the patty tasted weird. i would say it had the texture of the mcdonalds sausage but without the taste.

Tried Wally's, the sauce definitely makes the burger.
Ratings: 3.5/5
Reason: Patty....generic frozen patty
Fries need to be left in the oil longer; fries should be crispy, not soggy.
And the fried egg, was nicely cooked, slightly runny.

fries were alright. should have got onion rings.
still better than fatburger but not as good as five guys.

I'm surprised the old location (with all the history that location had) was closed down just so that some condo developer can open a sales office...seems like a lot of effort just to open a sales office.

The burger just didn't taste the same as they used to. Workers are really nice though. I bought a couple of meals and an extra burger to go and they forgot the extra burger. When I went back, the cashier was nice and let me add extra toppings and then gave me my money back for the hassle.

I decided to give Wally's another go, this past weekend. I ordered 2 Wally burgers, one standard, and another with a fried egg add-on. They were pretty good. The meat wasn't overdone, and I actually felt like I was biting into a Wally burger. Next time, I'm getting fried egg on both!

So, I went to Wally's with my sister and cousin, last night. According to my assessment, I have to say that the Wally's I knew, and loved is dead. The new owner has made too many tweaks. I ordered a Wally burger with a fried egg add-on, and there was so much wrong with it. The egg was overhard, and not runny, which is the way I like it.
Fries. I want a box of fries. They are trying to upscale it with thicker-cut taters. Gone are the the varying sizes, and shoestring style. Also, what happened to the corndogS? Wally's was not upscale. It was a good burger at a fast food price. They need to go back to the basics. They aren't competing with gourmet places. They shouldn't be. It's a fast food, greasy burger that should be at a fast food price. Stop trying to change it!

It was good when I went 2 months ago. It looks like they've been trying to tweak the menu, when they should've just left it alone! :P. Don't mess with a good thing! I almost feel like starting up my own Wally's to get things back to the way they were. To bring it back to the previous Asian-ownership influence, I'd call it it Wah-Lee's, and set it up right next to them. They should fire their kids. They suck!!!
EDIT: I'm ranting because I'm pretty drunk, right now.

The kids working there seem rather uninterested which is a shame however I could be very wrong about this. With the amount of loyal Wally's Burger customers, the business could be very successful in a lot of different ways and little do the kids know, they're sitting on a gold mine.
