i heard they rip ppl off like switching the crab with a diff crab inside the kitchen(smaller crab) or taking bits from ur crab to add on to other ppl's crabs etc. What i mean is, you won't get the whole crab u paid for cause that's how resturants make extra $.

Haha i remember i use to work for sun sui wah as a kitchen helper in charge of all seafood prep. i couldnt read any chinese but eventually recognized enough to cut shit up. I was so fast ,that a king crab would only take me 5 mins to cut up. One of the hardest things to cut up cus you were only given regular kitchen gloves. When de gutting the crab loses alot of water so the final weight would be a couple pounds lighter.

saw some for $11 on alexandra beside the cattle hotpot. Really good there, i prefer it over sunsuiwah. oh and when you see specials, dont order their 'set dinner' where they make it different ways for you as a set because the special price doesnt apply to that. what a rip off lol.

my cousin went to one of the abalone high end joint..on no.3 or sth
They ordered a king crab, by the time it reached their dinner table...they served FROZEN king crab legs, and the portion didnt seem right either. Needless to say, they were hella pissed and choked, left a penny on the table

Kirin is the best place to have this hands down.
http://www.kirinrestaurants.com/
They don't cheat you on the weight plus they make it good.
Personally, I find steamed with garlic the best. You can have it steamed with egg whites, which it's definitely not as tasty as the one with garlic as the taste is a little bland. You can also request to fry it with the spicy seasoning which is great also.
Usually when we eat it, we ask for them to have 1 crab 3 eats... What this means is that half of it it's steamed with garlic, the other half is fried with the spicy seasoning as mentioned above.
The sauce that is left over from the steamed is used to mix it with noodles and also served to the guests. The head shell is used to create a plate of seafood rice which contains scallops, small shrimps, and some kind of yellow sauce (forgot what it's called).
Hope that helps! It's in season right now so it's relatively cheap, around $15 per pound at Kirin.

do they cheat on weight? I havn't eat king crab at a restaurant anymore unless its a friend gathering that I dont have control of the location. 2 years ago I brought a live one from china town and the 6 lbs I paid equal to 10 lb a restaurant serve...

Actually, from what I know SSW is one of the only that does not cheat in weight, i have many friends that work there. I have never heard of anyone accusing SSW for cheating on weight.
c'mon...each restaurant cheats on the weight cos they dont calibrate the the machine to take into account the weight of the container used to put the crab in...and of course they round up....so you're gonna be paying an extra pound or 2 more for sure anyways..
and besides..dont you have to add extra $10 or $15 for the baked rice?

I went to Sun Wing Kee on granville in Richmond for King crab. Got a 7 1/2 pounder for 3 people, and its as big as what I got from other restaurants which they claimed to be 10 pound.
Crab itself was garlic steamed :) and they used the head and baked rice in it, was AWESOME
$8.99 per pound
10/10
nothing beats my father in law. works in the seafood business and buys a king crab for $8.50. brings it home and steams it or in butter and garlic. delicious.

Slaughter so many king crabs and lobster. Im sure we didnt cheat on weight at ssw although im not the one to weigh it. From the degutting and prep your bound to lose weight because of the water and parts. Garlic sauce used is made ftom dehydrated garlic and salt and msg.

Went with my parents to some place in Richmond called the Excelsior. I was told it may have been called Dynasty. Or D nasty - it still is. The interior is classic east side chinese restaurant. The soup we had was mainly vegetables and had flies. I'm serious. When we pointed it out to the waitress she told us they probably came from the vegetables. I don't even know what to say. King crab was ok. Everything kind of tasted like chicken broth. My heart sunk when my mom told me it cost about the same as SSW.

went to Sea Harbor. $16.80 for two dishes. we had a 16 pounder, it was HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE :haha::haha:. expensive too, i think sea harbor is the most expensive in richmond at 16.80, but it's well worth the price. better than shun feng's! (shun feng's is pretty good already)
