Visible Minority to Increase

VANCOUVER - The number of members of visible minorities in B.C. surpassed the one-million mark in 2006 and the majority of them live in Metro Vancouver, according to the latest census data.
About 86.8 per cent of visible minority members in the province lived in Metro, which is fast closing in on Toronto as the country’s most diverse region.
Visible minority groups accounted for 41.7 per cent of Metro Vancouver’s population, slightly behind Toronto’s 42.9 per cent and up from 36.9 per cent in Greater Vancouver in 2001.
Chinese were the largest visible minority in B.C., accounting for 40.4 per cent of the visible minority population and 10 per cent of B.C.’s total population in 2006.
Almost three-quarters of them were born outside Canada. Of those, one in five arrived in Canada from 2001 to 2006 while 45.8 per cent came in the 1990s.
About 43.6 per cent of Richmond’s population was of Chinese origin, the highest proportion of Chinese in a Canadian municipality. By comparison, 27.5 per cent of Surrey’s population was of South Asian origin.
Visible minorities accounted for only about 16.2 per cent of Canada’s total population, up from 13.4 per cent in 2001 and 11.2 per cent in 1996.
Immigrants arriving in Canada are more likely to move to the suburbs than to the downtown areas of large cities that previous generations historically preferred, according to a University of Toronto study released Monday.

Hongers stopped coming here, it's mainlanders now. In fact, some hongers are returning to hk. But i'd rather more hongers here than (most) mainlanders.

calling a honger a mainlander is kind of like calling a canadian an american. i would guess most canadians would be offended by the profiling but some wont care. same deal.
But i'd rather more hongers here than (most) mainlanders.

That was already true when I was in High School. In a class of 30+, you would be lucky to have more than 2-3 white people. And this was 10+ years ago.
It's good to see the cultural diversity in BC. However, a lot of the visible minorities are ignorant that they are racist against other visible minority groups or even the majorities. I find that they're more often the ones who are not accepting the multiculturalism here in BC.

Like the OP, it makes me a little sad.
Diversity is great, but sometimes not so much. I just hope all the immigrants that come keep the Canadian culture alive, and respect Canada.
I must say that is one thing America does well with immigrants, people assimilate much more than immigrants in Canada.
It saddens me when immigrants come to BC and move to Richmond, and never bother to learn English. The more minorities that come here, the more segregation you start to see where certain backgrounds keep to certain locations and amongst themselves.
Heck even on Revscene you see Chinese immigrants bash Canada and prop up HK and China, MEANWHILE YOU ARE LIVING HERE.
Immigration is fine, it's just the bullshit people that come and have no intentions to assimilate or treat Canada as a different country than the one they came from is what spoils it for the rest.

I think many haters here just don't really know many immigrants. Once you get to know them more personally, most are actually very good people with a lot to offer. Some may seem "distant" but that's only because they don't speak English very well and thus don't feel comfortable interacting with mainstream society yet. To them, coming to Canada is like moving to a different planet. It can take decades for them to integrate fully. Every single immigrant that I know/have talked to that has been here for a while are very greatfull to be Canadian. Some of the nicest people I've met in my life were Chinese Mainlanders and first generation Indian. Paradoxically, the worst people I've met in my life were Trailer Park Caucasians from Surrey.

Being a Chinese myself I am fully aware of the Chinese culture. I am in no means to say all immigrants from China are snobs. But at the same time there are no shortage of them with that attitude.

Have you been to Richmond? The immigrants there are certainly improving the lives of their families by driving around in $50k+ cars, buying properties and flaunting their cash in the Asian-style establishments.
Granted, these (rich) immigrants in Richmond are not reflective of all (Chinese) immigrants but they appear to be the majority rather than the minority, at least in this part of the region.
The stuck up type are a minority and and these types are present in every single group on the planet. People who think otherwise are just trying to find an excuse to vent their crude stereotypes.
Whether the stuck-ups are a minority or majority, that just depends on how many and who you meet. I've met many well-off immigrants who aren't stuck up, but I definitely wouldn't say they're in the majority.

My parents immigrated here and love Canada. They were rooting for Canada during the Olympics and didn't care that much for how China did.
I don't mind the idea of more immigrants as long as they accept the Canadian culture and treat this country as their home and not just a place of settlement.

In Asia there are lots of westerners living and working and even immigrating to Asia (Japan China Korea Taiwan Singapore) and they didnt bother to learn the local language and culture, all they do is stick in their white bars after work and never assimilate, much like the Chinese here.
