Powdercoated my rims

My advan's were getting kinda beat up from use so I decide to powdercoat them. I found Rainbow powdercoating in coquitlam. Also, convienently there was a metal stripping place right next door B&W metal strippers. They pretty much work together so you can drop your stuff off at either location and they'll take it from there. Very friendly people, sandblasting was quick and took a couple days. However I waited about a week and a half for the rims to be coated, I guess he was busy with other jobs. So I picked up the rims today and I'm fairly happy with the finish (matte black with 40% gloss) but it's not perfect, there's a faint orange peel but I think with a good wet sand it'll turn out nice.
It cost me $380 total so I can't complain, $260 for blasting and $120 for coating. Overall I thought rainbow and B&W were great, being friendly and easy to deal with was definately a big selling point for me.
Hope this thread helps with people that are considering powdercoating over painting.

They look good, and you can complain about anything when it only cost $380 for sanblast prep AND powdercoating.
He must have really rushed the paint job if he managed to leave some orange peel with powdercoating. Then again, $120 paint job, can complain. I wonder if they would take their time and do a better job if you slipped him an extra $50 or something. I personally cant really see any orange peel form the pics. Obviously in person it would be easier to judge.

He took quite awhile to finish them so I don't think he rushed it, but again for the money it's pretty awesome.

Just cause he had them for a long time doesn't mean he was working on them the whole time. Probably had them stashed in the back of the shop, since its a low price job, he was busy doing more profitable jobs. A week later, he happened to notice them and said, "Damn, I better just finish these and get it over with" and finished the job in an hour.
Trust me, I know how shops work. ;)

Dayum, for all 4, fuck the minor orange peel, that's a dirt cheap job.
I personally would have slipped him another 100, and said take your time please, and avoid orange peel, if I was picky.
nice, I just picked up my rims from rainbow too! i got 40% gloss 60 matte too. But yea only complain is that it took a while when he said it would only take a week.

For the priced you pay, I would never complain about the work. Especially at that level of finish they had. I'm tempted to do it.

I didn't have any curbage, I don't think they do that type of wheel repair there unfortunately. You'll have to take it to Green's or any other wheel repair shop.

Powder coat is paint. Think of it this way...paint you are thinking of in a can is just a pigment suspended in a liquid solution. Powder coat is utilizing only the pigment in pure powder form and making it stick through electrostatic charge.
Powdercoat is more resilient because it adheres to the aluminum better (One of the processes in powdercoating is a chemical bath which etches the surface of the aluminum). It still scratches though.

in that case why does painting it cost more, and why would one want to choose paint over powdercoat
whats your dad's company called and where
its called surrey powder coating.
he doesnt specialize in wheels (no powder coating shops do) but hes done them in the past.
i'm not saying hes the best when it comes to wheels or anything at all because i havent seen his work other than when he does railings and industrial jobs.
also he doesnt sand blast wheels, you'll have to do it yourself elsewhere.
i'd probably recommend a shop more experienced with coating wheels instead such as rainbow.
just a heads up to anyone who is considering powder coating.
the oven will melt any plastics on your wheels.
my dad had some brown kids come and he warned them to make sure they remove any plastics, and they thought their rivets were metal.
they were plastic and melted obviously and it was their own dumb fault.

you should get it sandblasted and cleaned first, painting or powdercoating won't solve the corrosion issue.

Only reason I stayed away from PCing is it's known to weaken the rigidity of the wheels. Again, if it's just street-driven and not being tracked often, it shouldn't be an issue.

Don't worry, if those rivets melted, those are decorative rivets and it's not a true 2 or 3 pieces wheel. You dad added a few horsepower to their car by shaving a few pounds off their wheels/rivets. :D

I've read about that too since my wheels are going to see trackdays more often than street driving, metallurgy changes can be minimized by increasing temperature of baking slowly, he knows what to do since he's done quite a few rims so i trust him.

Powdercoating is far superior in chip resistance, chemical resistance, and corrosion resistance, than any wet paint applications...

not hard, but it is time consuming, if you want to do it properly you'd have to sand it down a few times. and be good with a spray can.
try to do it in warm weather or in your garage possibly, but be careful in your garage for obvious reasons.

panther, nu, green are the most popular rim repair in town
they'd all be $250 + per rim, no $100 dollar crap. maybe some ghetto shop, but not from those 3 with well known reputation.
first they have to fix the curb, welding the aluminum, sand it, sand down the entire rim than finally repainting it.
took mine to NU and it was great $230 after taxes with discount, mounted and balanced

250 a rim? you must be missing a spoke or something haha. I've been to Green's a few years back to repair curbage on my one of my wedsports and it definately did not cost 250.
also they couldn't of sanded down the entire rim/paint it when I was at greens because the sa-90's has a blue ring decal around it, you can't just replace that. So I'm sure they use some other technique to avoid repainting the whole rim and keep costs low for the owner. Again, it could be related to the degree of damage so best bet is to call the shop yourself!

$175 for panther is the benchmark for refinish as their starting point. Special finish rims, polish, chrome, will all be extra +++++++ So slightly cheaper than NU, like $40 bux cheaper :D
bent rims cost ++++
EDIT :
for ur weds, that i dont know. I know for mine they repainted the whole thing at nu. Think of it this way, when you have a scratch mark on a bumper, they are not going to spot paint that side. They will paint the entire bumper, otherwise the paint aint gonna match. Old paint vs new paint is very hard to do

That's wierd, I've read that Mackin Industries does not sell volk decals to the public. You can only get 3rd party ones on the internet.
Also, I don't think local wheel shops have the resources to get the japanese factory decals but I'll be very impressed if they did.

This is the blue ring I was talking about, it's not something that's easy to replace. The turn around time was very quick so there's no way they can order it and put it on within that time limit. JDM parts take forever to arrive, I'm sure most of you know what i'm talking about!
