VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A 45-foot neon sign has been installed at Chinatown Plaza, alongside the big parkade on Keefer Street.
It's hoped by doing so, other businesses will change their storefronts to use neon lighting, bringing a boost in tourist attention to the neighbourhood.
Neon signs used to be popular in Chinatown but have mostly disappeared..

Didn't Granville and Broadway have tons of neon signs at one point? And IIRC, they were banned eventually. Is this just going to be the same thing over again? Certain street acquires a cool, unique (cheesy) look, some hippies complain, then they all get torn down?

i'm not faulting them for it because they're trying to increase business but will all these increased lights really help Vancouver maintain the green image it sold the world at the Olympics?

i'm not speaking of just one sign, im speaking of the intention of this one sign to spark a district of lights used to attract tourists. well the olympics were also used to attract tourists and one of its selling points was how green the city is. i'm just pointing out the irony of it.

^They already ruined their "image" by keeping the flame going for 17 days straight. :lol Majority of lights around Granville and Robson were on too? What's your point, I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue.

I don't see the irony people put up signs every day and know one cares. Whats so different with this sign?

the main Olympic buzz is over, now the city can do whatever it wants.

Being "green" or "eco" or whatever the fuck you want to call it is nothing more than bullshit hypocrisy anyway. Things like burning gallons of gas during a "green" olympics is absolutely par for the course.

did you even read my post? one sign = not an issue. various businesses putting up signs = not an issue. trying to get an entire disctrict to put up neon signs reminisent of the lights displayed in cities like Tokyo, HK, even Las Vegas = not even an issue for me (i'm not a hippie and i don't use solar). Until, that is, you factor in that hosting the Olympics was sold on the idea that Vancouver is a green city. the intention was to have the world know this and attract tourists for years to come, long after the Olympics left.
I do, in fact, like the idea of bring back neon lights and think this new sign looks great. I think it can add character to the city and bring in more business. i was able to name cities like tokyo, HK, and Las Vegas of the top of my head because of the great light displays they have from signs. If, during this effort, there was a successful way or even a noticable attempt to do all of this while truly being green, it would help Vancouver sell its green image even more. clearly, being green and thinking of new ways to operate responsibly is the future and is good business. so if it can be done in that way then do it, otherwise I don't think it would be as successful.

What is a big shiney sign going to do? Point down at all the rundown dirty storefronts and buildings in the area? This is like putting on a neon pink rave tanktop on a 400lb woman.

I think it would look pretty cool if there were a bunch of neon signs lighting the streets. It could also act as a deterrent to stop the bums from breaking into stores because of the amount of light it will produce assuming they will be left on all day

I came to Canada 25 years ago and grew up in the projects for 13 years, living a block away from Chinatown. I saw Chinatown flourish through the years while enduring a slow demise which turned into the dump it is today.
When Chinatown Plaza was built, it gave the community a sense of hope for it to re-establish itself and while it did for a while, especially with the original Chiantown Nightmarket, it all went downhill when Richmond became the new popular kid on the block. Personally, I believe that with the neon signs and condos being built in and around it, things will change for the better. Heck, even the new Bao Bei restaurant has a neon sign and is slowly gentrifying the area, bringing in people from outside the community. I would definitely give this neon sign phase a chance in hopes that it will revitalize the community.

and the adsense immediately showed an ad of LED lights. NICE.
They should just go LED all over the place like Nathan Road uses them to replace the flourescent light behind the sign boxes now.

The Chinese have Richmond, Vancouver, and Burnaby. Chinatown is obsolete and pointless in Vancouver!

neon lights won't mean shit if they don't have nightlife down there. A few lounges opening up doesn't mean anything. They need to bring a lot more down there if they want to bring life to that part of town.

they need to stay open later, do shows HK style with those cheap little operas etc and have dai pai dongs open etc etc especially during the weekends to revitalize the area... the nearby homeless aren't the issue they're just a scapegoat
it was weird going through chinatown during the olympics and seeing everything closed
i expected the business minded chinese would keep that place open 24/7 but i guess all the business oriented folks have moved elsewhere to richmond etc and the remnants don't have that energy

The only people who frequent Chinatown (outside of bums) are frugal old seniors. That's just the sad truth. Last time I was down there, a granny grabbed my fucking ass; I've had nightmares since.
ahhhhh so that sign is new
drove by awhile ago and saw it then got me thinking was it always there guess not

I agree that Chinatown needs a push to get more nightlife in there. The neon sign and the opening of Fortune Sound Club is a start.
It definitely was not the Chinatown from 15-20 years ago. :(
Time for lounges and clubs to invade Chinatown.....

if stores and places to eat opened till 12, and there were lounges and stuff open, i'd think of going. Even if it was just on Sat and Sun. A lot of the times, there's nothing really to do on the weekends and you just want somewhere to go.
