What to order at Dim Sum
Figured this would be the most appropriate forum that I participate for me to ask.
Anyways, there is a particular dish that I always try ordering but have no luck. The item is never really in the menu or at least, I don't see a picture of it. English is my native languange so perhaps it is indeed on the menu, but no pic. I order by pointing normally...
Here is my best description ( I couldn't google pics):
1. It is brown and crunchy and about the size of all dumpling but shaped more like a football. I think, it is taro inside. Not sure though. Something starchy and I think there is ground pork/beef
2. This one is normally wheeled in the carts at some places. It looks rice noodle and in long strips. You normally get soy sauce to dip it with. There is shrimp inside.
If someone can provide a rough way of translating into English or something along those lines that would help.
And is Kirin decent for Dim sum? That's where I normally go since it looks pretty clean and the menus have pictures.
Oh, and recommendations on stuff to order for next time as well. I normally get the white dumpling with shrimp, pork buns, and that other pork dumpling thats wrapped in yellow. And some other similiar stuff.
TIA

1. I think you're thinking of "woo gok" http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_V7WaNcOOMUU/Spb2FdKv6nI/AAAAAAAAG5Y/X1OjglngYZs/s400/Harbour+City+6+(600+x+450).jpg
2. Cheuung fun.....you can get it with beef, mushroom, geoduck, too
Kirin is good for dim sum.
Better idea is to go eat with your Chinese friends rather than asking random ppl on revscene

Funny you bring that up, but my Chinese friends don't speak it either. Trust me, I tried that ploy before.

Or is you want to order in english,
1. Deep fried taro
2. Rice noodle roll
Works for me the places I go..
You can always go to places that have the carts and you can just look at all the food that comes about and you don't really need to know the language ...

I really like the Golden Swan, They have wicked Chickens feet. i'm white and when I asked for it the women gave me a weird look. She even came back later and made sure thats what I wanted.
Kirin doesn't have carts and I really only like Kirin since it appears to be pretty clean. Of course, who knows whats going on in the kitchen. Oh, and I love how they give you warm towels after.
Thanks for the help guys, and thankfully, "woo gok" is pretty easy to say if brown fried taro doesn't work out.

Go to SUN SUI WAH on Main St. and FLOATA in Chinatown, last time I checked, they still have push-cart dimsum. SUN SUI WAH is decent, Floata is below average, in my opinion.

Anyone know what this is called? Its a round fried tofu that tastes sweeter and has a softer custard like texture compared to regular tofu. At dim sum, I think it's just served plain without a sauce unlike this photo. The name may be something like yook zi doufu, but I've tried saying that and staff have no idea what I mean.

^ Recently started liking it. Before I never really liked eggplant since it had no appeal at all. Doesn't really have a flavour, cooked the dim sum way, and the texture is different. But I'm open minded when it comes to food, so after trying it a few more times, I seem to be ordering it at dim sum all the time now.I think No.1 on 1st ave & renfrew (same plaza as T&T) is one fo the better old style dim sum place. Or "Dai loong wah" right beside Kootney Loop, that's another old style place.
We've been going to the "Loop", as we call it, for a very long time. Very good place to have dim sum. But just recently they seem to be messing up our orders, twice in a row now in two weeks. They now use the menu style where you order and they bring you a receipt like thing where they check off what the bring you. The last two times they have always put down more than we ordered. Like if we ordered one dish of _______, they would bring two or three and say we ordered it. And our last dish, we would have to wait a very long time for it, until we ask them where it is, then they say oh its on its way now. One time our last item was the chicken rice, and the chicken was raw, cause they rushed it. Lastly the bill never matches the amount we have ordered, when they mess up our orders mentioned above.
We know the owners and staff very well so it isn't "that" much of a big deal to us. And despite all of this, we still plan on going here since it's still pretty good, when the service is good.
As for Western Lake, I think that might be one of the best around the neighborhood. One of my favourite places as it's not too far from my house.

I said I would post my dim sum lunch from that day, but forgot until now. So here goes!
I went to Tao Heung 88, a chain in HK that has become phenomenally popular lately, with locations everywhere. They aren't as widespread as places like Maxims, but are much (much) better. Not the best dim sum you'll have, but pretty consistent and great prices during certain times (we went for afternoon-tea, which was no more than $2 CAD for the most expensive dishes, most were about $1)
http://carlrules.com/images/dimsum1.jpg
Prawn balls dipped in almond shavings. These were okay
http://carlrules.com/images/dimsum3.jpg
2 types of sausage in buns. They were really good! Yun Cheugn (liver sausage) is one of my favourite chinese foods, and this place makes a good version of it.
http://carlrules.com/images/dimsum8.jpg
Ha Gao, of course. Tao Hung makes excellent Ha Gao, with large chunks of crispy fresh shrimp inside, really juicy and nice thin skin.
http://carlrules.com/images/dimsum5.jpg
Cha Siu Bao, another standby. I liked it more than my wife did. I think you can really appreciate the pork fat taste in it, but she said there was too much sauce. I agree about the sauce, but it was still pretty good.
http://carlrules.com/images/dimsum6.jpg
Phoenix Claw, one of, if not THE best dim sum dish out there. Tao Heung's is very plump and juicy. A great example of it.
http://carlrules.com/images/dimsum2.jpg
I saw these duck feet on the special menu, and thought I would try them out. They were terrible! The duck skin was way too tough, and the bones didn't come apart easily. They didn't look like they would be this style in the picture.. Totally disappointing.

My 2nd fave dim sum dish is the way they do the tripe. Unfortunately Tao Heung's wasn't so good on this day. WAY WAY WAAAAAAAY too much sauce, and the dish had barely any tripe in it. This was the most expensive one too, so totally disappointing.

Their siu lung bao is VERY good. They don't overdo it with the soup, as so many places do lately. It's just the right amount, where you can either sip it out first, or put the whole thing in your mouth which is MUCH better to fully enjoy the taste and texture.

We tried these special "phoenix eye" dumplings, with no description other than the name. They were just ha gao with some XO on top. Not very good, as the XO just masked the subtle flavour of the shrimp. This is one of those perfect examples of a dish people order for no reason other than to gain face, as it has a fancy name, fancy ingredients, and a high price. As usual, the taste isn't very good at all.

Dessert was malaysian sponge cake with custard. It was fresh and delicious.

I'm impressed by the white guys in this thread. You know and appreciate/eat all the good stuff at dim sum! :)
Most Caucasians I know wouldn't touch chicken feet and internal organs with a ten foot pole.
