With the rise of manufacturers producing DSLRs that can shoot video. The guys at Zacuto decided to create a web series comparing DSLR Versus 35mm Film. They invited industry experts to do the various caparison test. Pretty entertaining to watch! They basically test all the DSLR cameras that have HD video functions (GH1, 5DMKII, T2I, D3s etc etc).

Zacuto Films presents, “The Great Camera Shootout 2010: a three part web series where gunslinging HD DSLRs face-off against legendary 35mm Film.” The webisodic series showcases the top performing hybrid HD-DSLR cameras: Canon: 5D MKII, 7D, 1D, 550D/T2i Rebel, Nikon D3s, Panasonic GH1 and compares the image quality of these cameras against the gold standard of 35mm film. In addition, the Canon 5D MKII test includes the new 24p firmware. "This was an enormous undertaking," says Steve Weiss, Web Series Director, "and great care was to make this an apples-to-apples test with scientific accuracy behind it."

Each webisode of the series features various controlled camera assessment tests which include: resolution, latitude, sensitivity, speed & ultra high speed, noise, color & green screen. The battery of tests were administered under strict controls and conducted by Robert Primes ASC, Gary Adcock, Philip Bloom, Jens Bogehegn and colorist Ryan Emerson.

See the reactions to this test following 2K screenings, where “HD DSLR is compared to 35mm Film”. The test results were projected in a 2K theatrical environment at three screening locations: Stag Theater at Skywalker Ranch, LucasFilms Ltd., AFI (American Film Institute) Theater in Hollywood and the FilmWorkers Astro Color Timing Theater in Chicago. Hear commentary from the screenings by top ASC, Hollywood, Indie Film and Event & Convergence Photographers.

I never appreciated the fact that film holds so much detail, especially with the highlights test. It's phenomenal.

But to hear the pros say that the new crop of digital still/video cams are approaching film is kind of nice :p

One of the reasons I'm planning to jump on the DSLR boat for video shooting is because they have fantastic low light capabilities. Can't wait for the next episode. If you guys make a comment in the Zacuto link you can have a shot at winning Zacuto Z-finders. :)

Also, according to www.cinema5D.com the final episode of "House" will be filmed using 5D mkII's and Canon still lenses. Will be interesting to see how that looks.

The D3s is unbelievable at high ISO...it wipes the floor with every other FF camera on the market.

5D2 is being used to shoot the last episode of "House M.D." for this season.

On another note, did anyone notice the the dead pixel in their theatre scenes? I was watching full screen as noticed it. Bugged the hell out of me. Thought I had a dead pixel on my screen.

Would it be that they had Noise Reduction turned on? The D3s had really nice high ISO low light images. I wished they would have shown what the D3s performed like without NR turned on.

Using the 5DMKII and a Red rock kit is still cheaper than all their 35mm Setups yet they achieve/yield pretty "Similar" results. The issues with these D-SLR cameras is that it's a bit harder to get focus with the current lens that are available. Apparently, manufacturers are creating some "Cinema style" lenses at the moment. We'll see how that comes along when they're announced.

Oh and some more 5DMKII House fun facts. They used all the Canon Primes, 24-70, and the 70-200 lens. :D

I was writing about my own personal experiences with the D3x vs. D3s vs. 1DmkIV vs. Sony a900 vs. 5DmkII. The D3s is the high ISO king, whereas the Sony a900 is the low ISO king (not by much).

interesting that they brought up barry lyndon.

If you guys haven't watched it, its a must see. The famous scene is one lit only with candle light. (filmed in 1973-1974)

(ps. can't believe they haven't released it in hd yet)

They must somehow enable and make RAW files usable as a video file. The files are gonna be huge but the details are so worth it! I WANT!
