MMA Gyms?

Hey guys, I'm looking at a good mma gym for the summer. I have never had any training in the sport and would like to start kickboxing to get fit. I have fallen out of shape when i got out of high school. I checked out dynamic and was wondering if anyone had any insight on that particular gym, and if anyone has any other suggestions.

Dynamic is a great gym, I don't go there myself but I train with a couple buddies who happen to go there. Good instruction but it's more geared towards actual MMA and BJJ than actual just stand alone muay thai/kick boxing in my opinion.
If standup is the only thing you're looking for then I recommend Kai Singthong, Iron City Muay Thai or KB1. If you're more interested in learning MMA, then I suggest Dynamic, Universal (DT location) Franco's Pankration or Posener's Pankration aka Kel Lees.
Hope that helps! Oh and remember to bring the work ethic, none of these places are going to let you slack.

Good opinion, he should probably have some sort of foundation before jumping into MMA.
Not to mention, either of the choices you mentioned would probably be more cost-efficient than MMA training, while still providing you with a good dose of training.

I've talked to guys who don't have a base in anything.. and who train in MMA...they can't really tell me anything that they've learned..
I've asked them what their base was.. and they tell me, "MMA... we do everything.."
lol
don't get me wrong.. it's fine.. i'm sure if you did it long enough you'd probably get good at it..
but..if you want to compete in amateur fights... i wouldn't..
all the good fighters have a strong foundation in a particular discipline.
choose a striking base.. and a grappling base... concentrate on those two for like a year.. at least..
If you just want to get into shape and have some fun..then sure.. by all means.. MMA is great. That's what martial arts is about.

Dynamic on cambie isnt a very big place to begin with, no chance they have room for treadmills and stuff like that. Just an open mat with chains for hanging heavy bags.

Posenor Pankration, Prankration is a greek martial arts that focus on striking, wrestling and grappling. (Pretty much MMA), they also have a muay thai class, submission class, weapon class, cardio kick boxing and etc. Its a 6 month contract, and would cost around 700$~. Renfrew and Gaverely, the main instructor is a 4th degree black belt, and won over 16 kick boxing championships or something lol. When you pay for the 6 month contract, you can go to any class you want without extra payments, except for stenght and conditioning, and i think weapons.

Does Anyone know if i need any gear when i start muay thai. and anywhere where i can get this and the approximate cost?
Mrtemp
04-01-2010, 02:24 PM
I don't know about BC, but I train muay thai and mma out here in Ottawa. For most of my muay thai classes, I need 16oz boxing gloves, handwraps and a skipping rope. If you're going to do sparring down the road, you may want to get headgear, shin guards on top of mouthguard and 'banana' protector. I've had good luck getting gear on ebay, so try there. My boxing gloves were included in my signup fees.
I agree with getting a strong base in one area or discipline as well. Mine is more in stand-up so I'm still getting owned in the grappling.

1-18oz gloves, shin guards, and a helmet. You can get some at golden arrows martial arts supply shop, they got a lot of types, ranging from 30-100$ a pair.
Derek_N84
04-01-2010, 09:58 PM
Just starting muay thai? I started with handwraps, 16oz gloves and a jump rope. You don't need much else till you start sparring. I suggest spending a little more on your gloves, roughly around the 80-100 dollar range. I've seen a lot of people pick up cheap 30-50 dollars gloves to start and they fall apart with regular use around the 5 month mark. I still have my first pair of gloves (Twins) for close to 2.5 years now, they're being used as my bag gloves now and they're still in pretty good shape.

Whats the difference in the weights, is it just a matter of comfort or training purposes?
StealthFighter
04-02-2010, 01:05 AM
so you can build up hand speed and hand endurance so they don't drop in the last round.
Derek_N84
04-02-2010, 01:06 AM
Heavier gloves mean quicker hands when the gloves are off or when the glove weight drops. I suggest 16oz since they'll build up some endurance in your shoulders and they're the ideal size/weight for when you begin sparring later on.

just about done my week trial at dynamic and thought i should leave a review. Its great atmosphere. Great instructors and you pretty much just jump right into the class. everyone in the beginners class has been really helpful giving me tips and helping me with form. I think i have committed to this place only thing is my arms and legs are sore. but i don't really feel the burn in my abs. But its okay cause its nice to sweat. and the class really gets you to sweat. And DONT MAKE YOUR FIRST CLASS A FRIDAY its taught by another guy (mike i think) and he really pushes you which is good for my 3rd class unless you want to be pushed. That is all for now.

could be anything from boxing to muay thai to jiujitsu to wrestling
which one are you most interested in? picking the one you're more likely to enjoy will mean that you'll continue to do it as a hobby instead of treating it as a work out and you'll get more enjoyment out of it
keep in mind that boxing is going to be the cheaper option of those.
jiu jitsu/muay thai/wrestling/mma classes are usually in the $100+ range. dynamic mma does offer a combination of all of those for ~$150/month if you pre-pay for 3 months in advance. they're really good because they're close to langara and they have classes mon-sunday and their schedule is pretty good compared to the rest of the gyms out there.
Adam teaches the jiu jitsu/mma part and Joel does most of the muay thai training. I don't go there anymore but I enjoyed my time there and all the guys were real nice and understanding to the noobs that showed up.

They offer a free 1 week trial so you can see how you like it and whether its for you before you drop the money for it.

you can do judo, which is relatively cheap grappling. it works out to be like 35-40 bucks a month. you can throw people and you learn ground techniques. very good base to start off on. unfortunately with sport judo there are a lot of limitations on what you can do during ne-waza (ground phase). Actual kodokan judo you're allowed to do ankle locks and knee bars etc. unfortunately NOT during competition.. so most clubs don't bother teaching it.

i use the shock doctor cup and compression short combo. doesn't move around much. only time it moved on me in the 6 months i've had it was when i went for an armbar off the rearmount and it shifted sideways.
the gel padding makes it pretty comfortable. it isn't wide on the sides so it doesn't inhibit movement. the only problem is it's a bit more low-profile than other cups, so there's not much room for your junk.
it's ~$30. i got it from some shop on ebay for the bioflex cup.
if you do striking, shock doctor has a stainless steel cup.
a cheaper alternative that some people like is to get a traditional jock and then wear compression shorts over them.
Thanks for the tips!
Started back up at Dynamic MMA today and it was great.
They have a back to school special right now that lasts until the end of this week.
Prepay for 1 year and its only $800. Works out to be around $67/month for unlimited training. They have muay thai, bjj, wrestling and mma to incorporate everything into one. Mon-Fri classes from noon - 930 and weekend afternoon classes.
Best deal in Vancouver right now.
You can tell that MMA is really picking up steam in Vancouver. I showed up around 5pm and the early evening classes use to be pretty empty. It was PACKED today full of high school kids learning. Was definitely a shock for me haha

We usually do 10 minutes of stretching and warm up and then you pick a partner and you're with that person for the rest of the session.
Being packed isn't that big of an issue anymore because the mat space is about 2x the size of the entire cambie location lol

Guess I'll skip the 430 class and show up to the 630 session since you & vafanculo will be there
Show up in shorts/tee & sandals cause they're pretty strict when it comes to having shoes/sandals on when you're outside of the mats
Bring water, towel, wraps & gloves if you have them. I wrap most of the time if I can get them on before class starts. Most of the people there don't wrap but I hate wearing my gloves without wraps.
No sparring in the beginners/fundamentals class so don't worry about shin pads, head gear or mouth piece.

It was nice meeting you and vafanculo today.
I try to show up mon - friday for the beginner's class. I skip out on some classes because of work but for the most part I'm usually there at least 3x a week.
Are you guys going to sign up or are you going to take the free week and decide from there?

We plan on signing up but after my week is over.
I'm going to try to make it to the 430 class tomorrow depending on how much of my paper I complete for school. :p
My brother and vafanculo won't be able to make it because they have work...will you be there tomorrow?
Awesome! Glad you guys liked it :D

Go hitup dynamic mma, and check out the proshop (gear locker) in there. u can for sure get a complete package for under 150$ depending on what ur looking for
Go to the shop at the front of the store and ask for Will. He has a new shipment of Jaco stuff that came in last week.
I think he's the only place that sells Jaco locally cause the other place on W. 4th closed down. I highly recommend the Jaco fight shorts because they're awesome

My kickboxing coach just opened up 2 new martial arts dojos in west van if anyone is interested. http://www.westvancouvermartialarts.com/
Kickboxing classes are free for the month of december
Your gym seems pretty traditional (tma) and more geared towards kids...
Theres nothing wrong with traditional martial arts since mma draws from all types of martial arts..
But i think crowds that enjoy mma have learned that TMA styles don't fair as well in real world applications.
I like tma's, in the way that they teach discipline etc etc... WHen i have kids im definately enrolling them into a tma sport first.

Are there any gyms that have awesome BJJ and Muay Thai??
I want to start training but not for MMA. It seems like most of the gyms that have awesome BJJ have seriously lacking striking programs that have been added as a afterthought.
Is it considered disrespectful to train at two different gyms?? Like for example Gracie Berra for BJJ and somewhere else for Muay Thai.

Why didn't you go to the Xmas party? It was alright. Gave away some cool prizes, few people won a free month.
I don't think you need THAT great conditioning for beginner muay thai classes. One thing I wish was they do different is give you a harder workout. I took one class of all levels mma, and that is where I was huffing and puffing.
Apparently they will begin running crossfit classes in the new year, I am excited about that.

it's not disrespectful as long as you tell both head instructors. don't hide the fact that you train at the other gym. the worst are those new people that come in and pretend they have no experience.

Ya Dynamic does look sick but I think it is too far from me.
I'm looking for Vancouver/Burnaby. I do not drive so its kind of a bitch.
Thats why I was thinking Gracie Barra for BJJ and Kai SingThong for Thai Boxing.
At first I was thinking of doing Judo because it is so cheap, but I want more traditional with more Newaza. Not all this Olympic sport geared clubs which seems to be all there is.
I plan on starting one of the other BJJ or Thai Box first for about a year then add the other if I can manage it.
for the record I have previous TKD, Karate and western boxing training. But that was about 10 years ago. I stopped at 19 I am 30 now. I only really liked the boxing, the rest seemed too much like a money grab mcdojo type of deal.
I am also only 5' 4'' 120lbs and I dont think I am getting any bigger lol.

you can come train with my judo club. we do half newaza and half tachiwaza.
but on mondays the instructor is really open. he asks us what we wanna learn. so if you want to learn newaza the whole class, then you can. if you wanna do no-gi, we can do that. if you wanna do tachiwaza, you can. the guy is a real beast on the ground.
wednesday we learn stuff more geared towards competitions. still very technical.
friday is a lot more traditional stuff. textbook style.
if you join a really competitive club like burnaby judo, it's all competition based. not technical, just rely on strength.
my club is at renfrew community centre if you wanna come train with us. we have a lot of bjj guys that train with us.
monday 8:30-10
wed 7-8:30
fri 6-7:30
but with the holidays. the only classes in december left is 22nd and 29th. then we start again on jan 5.

Just join and try it out. Every gym out there offers at least a free class for you to check it out. I think Dynamic still offers a free 1 week trial. There's no formal classes for the next 2 weeks because of the holidays. It's all open mats so we just show up and do whatever we want with whoever is there. Just drop by and talk to Will (604CEFIRO) @ the front and he'll give you all the info you need.

first off, youre not supposed to jump into MMA if you dont have any background in any other martial arts experience. a good instructor would tell you go learn some BJJ or whatever first. Once you get enough experience, he'll tell you to go to his MMA sessions after. Whoever that let you do MMA right away probably wants your money.

good coach, their guys always win most of the BJJ tourneys in BC. associated with ricardo de la riva who created the de la riva guard who in turn trains with the nogueira brothers and marcelo garcia. they often do seminars in vancouver too.
no idea with muay thai.

Rather than starting an all new thread:
I come from a Judo background but it's been many years since I practiced. Tournament based stuff like Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai aren't really what I'm after, I want real world disciplines. I'd like to get into Krav Maga or perhaps a more aggressive variant of Kyokushin. An old friend of mine is a black belt in Kyo but his teacher was ex-military and had his own spin on it, not sure if that is replicated anywhere locally.
I'm not opposed to classes but would rather have more personalized training, small groups etc. I'm not at all into standing in front of a mirror for an hour practicing kickboxing combination's, that shit's a waste of time. I'm not looking for an MMA gym but thought this would be a good thread to ask these questions in. I don't plan to compete on any level, this is just for my own health/fitness/personal use.
Any suggestions or experiences?

Haha I'm not bashing MMA at all it's just not what I'm really looking for. But I figured some people here may have a lead on some different style gym's :) But I am gonna bash kickboxing schools that make students do combos in front of a mirror for hours on end with little to no real bag or pad work mixed in. Might as well do some Billy Blanks videos.

I train at Universal MMA, where the BJJ is taught by Rickson Gracie one and only Canadian black belt: Shane Rice. Dude is an amazing instructor with a great pedigree. I am also a blue belt under him. The prices at UMMA are very reasonable, but if Dynamic's your choice, then you can't go wrong with that either. Adam Ryan's a legit black belt under Carlson's highest ranked BB in Canada- Marcus Soares, aka the guy who trained Denis Kang (the best fighter Vancity has ever produced). Under Adam you'd be under the Carlson lineage- one of the most famous and successful MMA/BJJ teams to have ever been formed. Marcus himself has a school here and it's in Edmonds, so it might be a ways from you, but for pure BJJ it is one of the best in Vancouver. It probably has the highest per capita of black belts and brown belts. The best way to get good at BJJ is to get crushed and you'll get just that at Marcus's school. His style is totally no-nonsense and will toughen you up mentally and physically.
Bibiano Fernandes who is a pro-MMA fighter and probably the best current active fighter out of Vancouver just switched over to Marcus' and you'll be very fortunate to train with him. Oh and Bibiano has won the Mundials a ludicrous number of times. The Mundials are the most prestiguous BJJ competition in the world. I have been training BJJ on and off for 5 yrs now, 5 without the gi and 3 with it. I also have a friend or two whose at least a purple or higher at all the schools and so if you have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM.
For those of you that joined Dynamic when it was at the Cambie location, did you have to pay another membership fee at the new Richmond location? Or was it grandfathered?
Just curious, I haven't trained in a while and Dynamic has the best schedule and price out of all of the gyms in Metro Van.
The Cambie location is closed so all our memberships were transferred over to the Richmond location.

Wkx didn't burn down, the building above and around it did. It was just under 3ft of water. And the new gym is 3 mins away, right by Suitela lol. It'll be open possibly next week. Awesome gym to go too, everyone is friendly. The beginners class involves 30 mins of shadow boxing, stretching and cardio in front of a mirror and another 30 mins of pad/bag work with a partner. If you think you're too tough to shadow box in front of a mirror and think you're "wasting your time," you can join the sparring class and show the fighters that spent hours in front of a mirror how it's done lol.

New WKX gym looks great. But the weights area got cramped up. Oh well. I'm always there after 8pm anyway where no one uses the weights. Sucks they didn't have insurance but they got lucky most of their equipment that got submerged in the water they salvaged, even their new treadmills about a month old before the incident happened.

good coach, their guys always win most of the BJJ tourneys in BC. associated with ricardo de la riva who created the de la riva guard who in turn trains with the nogueira brothers and marcelo garcia. they often do seminars in vancouver too.
no idea with muay thai.
i did boxing for stand up and i went to astoria which is like a straight up ghetto rocky balboa gym. but the guy who runs it is straight up old school.
Went astoria few times. That guy dont teach anything. Its just plain old do your own thing and maybe he give you pointers as you go. Its not even a class. I learned way more going to franco fkp. Astoria the old man just said keep working your jab. I went 3 xs and never again.

Anyone know of some good jiu jitsu dojos in the east vancouver area? I'm fine with either brazilian jiu jitsu or classical japanese ju jutsu, but it has to be strictly jiu jitsu. Ideally a balance between price and quality. Not looking for anything fancy - my preference is with a place that has a teacher that can teach well.
I've done karate my whole life, so looking to get some experience doing some ground work to diversify.
killarney community centre in e.van has JJJ i think it was pretty cheap something like $10 a class?

I think $50 will get you no where for bjj. Monthly fees are closer to $150 a month where ever you go.
Not sure exactly where in East van you are, but there's one on Kingsway near slocan. Garcie Barra by main and Kingsway. If you're near boundary Rd, there's one across the street from Brentwood mall.
ya there's eastvan bjj near rupert/kingsway but iirc they're $150/month unless you're a little kid i think it's like $70 (i'm thinking of enrolling my son there let me know if anyone has input on the kids class). there's another place near kingsway/boundary i imagine is similar pricing.
renfrew community does judo that's quite cheap too iirc i think $20/month??? no idea what their program is like. i was looking for my son but they have a min. age requirement which he doesn't meet yet. if anyone has input how they are for little kids there too let me know

If your budget is around $50~/month, definitely look into Judo. Most clubs are around that price range.Judo's one of the cheapest martial arts to do because most of the clubs are regulated and are non-profit.
Check out which location works best for you and go try out a few clubs. Scroll down, you'll see all the clubs in B.C.

Thanks guys.
To my understanding Judo is mostly take-downs and throws, which I'm inclined to try, but it would be nice to learn some grappling as well.
I've heard some judo clubs do half standing and half ground though, which would be awesome!
Just out of curiosity because I've done some research on concussions before, but does anyone know how safe judo is from concussions? Just wondering, because it seems like unlike BJJ, the shear volume of throws to the ground might seem like it causes repetitive trauma to the head. On the other hand, I also feel like if done properly, the mats are good for shock absorption. I can't imagine it being near as dangerous as boxing where you actually get struck on the head.

Yeah, generally I would say more emphasis is put on the throws (Tachi-waza). I would say most clubs are probably 60% Tachi-waza and 40% Ground (Ne-waza) focused. You can definitely find some clubs that are around 50/50 though.
First thing you do in Judo is learn how to break fall properly. You'll need to be able to take a fall before you start learning any throws. TBH, I've wondered about the concussion aspect too. Most of the older guys I know that have done Judo for a while, none of complained about any type of concussion or head-related injury. Only time I've heard about it happening is when they got elbowed right in the jaw as a guy turned in for a throw. Osteoarthritis in the knee, hips, fingers are things that happen much more often.
JJJ is the same, you learn to take ukemi (break falls) so you shouldn't get hurt (unless you mess up your ukemi). probably the most useful thing in everyday life (i assume most of us will never get in a street fight, but higher probability of having a trip/fall). when asked they noted it can be hard on the body, mostly the back if anything (i had concerns b/c i have bad knees) and maybe joints from various locks

BJJ u mean right. Took it at gracie barra for a bit, gotta make sure you guys dont snap your elbows and arms doingit as well.
no i meant JJJ (japanese jj) - that was info i got when i was inquiring about it. i'd look in to bjj but since it's all on the ground and kneeling i figure it would be hell on my bad knees.

Judo originated from JJJ so a lot of throws/techniques are very similar. All 3 martial arts really are great and have similarities and strengths in different areas.
