Sochi Rumour?
Acura604
03-26-2010, 07:17 PM
I heard this rumour by 2 sources now that Sochi, Russia is trying to back out of hosting the olympics. They are 'very' behind in building the required infrastructure for 2014. IF they do not meet certain milestones by a given date, the 2014 Winter Olympics MAY have to come back to the previous host country because the infrastructure is already ready.
There are a few other reasons such as the ongoing fight between muslim seperatists and Russia and apparently some athletes dont have a desire to go there.
ANyone hear about this?

Sounds like wishful thinking to me, probably started by the cooks who wanted to create a national holiday to commemorate the fun week they had.

There was also a neighbouring country that said it was improper to host the Games there because a large number of their people were murdered by the Russians/Soviets on the land where Sochi is now.

given how the russian president is really pushing for success at Sochi, they won't let a bit of delayed infrastructure and civil unrest take the games away from them. there's just no way. infrastructure can be solved by using more workers, and unrest can be solved by bringing the pain into someone's backyard.
they always say this before a games how they'll never finish the venues and they always finish them in the end. For example, Athens.

well if sochi can't build venues with the lead time the Olympics gave them you think the 2nd city can do a marginal job with less time? i think not.

Lets clear the air here.
Yes I did hear this same thing on Team1040, The Sport Market, whom stated the rule that if the host city is not ready, the games will revert back to the previous location. Its an IOC policy and no where did any of these rumors of not being ready is true.
At the moment, the Russians are hiring people to coordinate events and how to move people in and out of the place. They want to hire Russians and not use Olympic Planning Experts to show the world that Russia can "Get 'er Done" without help.

Unless it's Vancouver. The Canada Line took 4 years. lol
If the Olympics did come back to Vancouver in 2014, it would be pretty fucking awesome. Doubtful, but awesome. Especially if Canada wins Gold in Hockey twice in Vancouver.

It's a Rumour. I'll bet both of my testicles that Sochi will be the Host of the 2014 games.
For the people who say "what if the games do come back, who's going to pay for it?". The Russian government/Olympic Commitee will pay for the games. They will pay however much it cost to run the games during that time period.

I read on 24 this morning that some VANOC execs are actually flying to Sochi in May or something because Russian olympic committee are thinking of hiring some of the VANOC people to help them since they have fresh experience.

1 - 4 years is not 'more than enough time' because sochi is building 2 full olympic cities for the games. everything brand new from scratch. they arent using existing venues like vancouver did
2 - look back, both greece and sydney didnt have all the venues complete by the opening ceremonies for their games. shit takes time unless youre china
3 - the games will go ahead in russia even if half the games take place in moscow.

I was working at athletes village in Whistler during the paralympics and this is what I heard from one of the coordinators from Team Poland:
1) Russia will build like crazy because the current president is willing to dish out money to find the required manpower and resources.
2) The plan is to have all university students in Russia to participate in Sochi. This is why we saw many Russian volunteers/workers for the Olympics. They were sponsored by Russia to learn from Vancouver 2010 and to apply what they have learned here to Sochi.
3) Anyone eligible for military service will be involved in Sochi one way or another.
No matter how much we want the Winter Olympics to be back in Vancouver, it just will not happen. Just imagine the embarrassment if Russia cannot complete or provide enough infrastructures/venues for the Winter games. Hell will rise in Russia if that was ever to happen.
In other news, I was talking to some coaches and they said that Vancouver could become one of the host for the Summer Olympics! Just add in some tracks and a world class swimming pool then you have yourself a candidate! *wishful thinking*

Vancouver for Summer Olympics, we definitely could do it.
highly unlikely...for starters we just held the games so its not coming back here anytime soon regardless if they're the summer games. Secondly, we all saw the amount of people bitchin and moaning about the cost of these games..summer olympics cost wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more than winter olympics.
summer olympics cannot happen in vancouver as the required infrastructure dont exist...if it really revert back it will go back to Beijing not vancouver.

Wishful thinking. Regardless of how far behind they are, they have almost four years and the Russians will throw all sorts of money and manpower at the problems. They have significantly more cash than we do...plus they don't need public approval to spend it.
And they'll break out all kinds of slaves to toil and labor until that shit is finished...or they get sent to a Siberian gulag.

Sochi is project managed by SNC Lavlin. I highly doubt they will fail.
I think a lot of RV users / Vancouverites don't understand the deep economy relations out East especially in Ontario has out with Russia. Just because Vancouver to have a huge Asian population, doesn't mean the whole Canada is too.

theres several reasons that they wanted to stay out of wwII. They were not ready for a war, and especially a war on 2 fronts. A majority of americans wanted to stay neutral and if it wasn't for the work of Winant and a cbs corrosponded (who's name slips me now) and the attack on pearl harbor and the treaty that germany and japan wrote, they probably wouldnt have entered the war.

I personally wouldn't want the games back in Vancouver. How soon you all have forgotten the costs! Do you want to hear the sound of another 6 billion dollars for security...which will 'definately' be more by the time 2014 rolls around. We haven't even figured out the final tally what these past games will cost us!

with the venues already built the only cost there would be is the athletes village since the places will be already rented out as well set up and the security. All the money made would go towards the debt we occurred in the 2010 olympics.
Shit it would be weird but I would be happy with it no questions asked but don't hold your breath

I'm not sure how this stupid rumor got started, but there is no credibility to it whatsoever. Yes, they have A LOT to build still, including all their public transit infrastructure and most venues. But the Russians are extremely proud people, and Putin would rather have 1/2 of Russia's population die through intense manual labor, 24 hours a day, to get everything complete in time rather than concede the Olympic games.

It really makes you wonder how corrupt the IOC really is. Sochi had no infrastructure whatsoever but yet they give them the winter games. I'm sure Sochi will be building half the venues days before the games but the IOC really needs to do a better job of handing out the games to cities that need massive infrastructure work. It sort of reminds me of the World Cup this year, SA is having issues with unions and overall quality of the stadiums and in return half the tickets remain unsold.

yeah last to enter, and first to finish.
you know the US is the only military force capable of mobilizing 100 000+ troops to anywhere in the world in one month and have a sufficient logistical system to support those troops.
logistical support is the main thing, your troops are useless without the proper fuel, food, bullets whatever else they need.
