Food of Macau....

So my dad went along with his balling buddies to Macau to gamble, and won quite a decent amount of money on saturday... so he called my brother up and gather the whole family and head to Macau the next morning with a chopper to find the best food in Macau.
My gf and I, my bro + wife, and my sis + husband and my parents a total of 8 ppl flew to macau in search of the best food available in Macau....
my sister had a list of shops recommended by this bitch on tv
http://img.b.tvb.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/tvbi/files/2009/04/vc_e89887good.jpg
and apparently... they all sucked... and all these shop did was pay her to advertise.
so the first stop was to this Portuguese restaurant
http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs421.snc3/24316_423444809111_506864111_5381324_6180476_n.jpg
it was alright... not super great, but not bad.
http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs401.snc3/24316_423444844111_506864111_5381325_2630188_n.jpg
vegetable soup.... bland and tasteless
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs441.ash1/24316_423444869111_506864111_5381326_6018274_n.jpg
garlic toast was one of the best part of the lunch....
http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs441.ash1/24316_423444889111_506864111_5381327_1129046_n.jpg
miniature pork chop bun (not from restaurant)
http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs441.ash1/24316_423445029111_506864111_5381346_2086486_n.jpg
piece of pork chop we took out from the bun
my sis brought it somewhere else near the restaurant, I didn't go with her so I didnt know where... but apparently had a huge line up. Since I didnt wanna get full from the huge pork chop bun, i made a small one with the buns the restaurant provided....
this has to be the best piece of food i had for the whole day. never had a better pork chop bun!
http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs421.snc3/24316_423444914111_506864111_5381328_1860486_n.jpg
Grilled Sardine... was pretty good... but nothing really special about it
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs421.snc3/24316_423444954111_506864111_5381334_1417147_n.jpg
Curry Crab, the sauce was awesome, they used curry oil to make the sauce, but the crab sucked....
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs421.snc3/24316_423445089111_506864111_5381354_2944098_n.jpg
Garlic roasted pigeons
I had better in vancouver, so nothing great to talk about
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs441.ash1/24316_423445129111_506864111_5381355_6298268_n.jpg
Bacalhau potato balls, one of the better dish, it had Bacalhau flavor but potato texture.
http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs441.ash1/24316_423445149111_506864111_5381356_5330429_n.jpg
Beef Short ribs
one of the signature dish at the place. it was tender and juicy. I'd recommend ordering.
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs441.ash1/24316_423445194111_506864111_5381357_2178842_n.jpg
Bacalhau+ cabbage.... the cabbage itself is nothing spectacular, but the Bacalhau was awesome
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs441.ash1/24316_423445219111_506864111_5381358_3188589_n.jpg
Pig knuckle... it was tender and juicy, but not the best I've had.
The lunch was about $1500 for 8 person... so it was alright.... not disappointing, but nothing too special either.

After that, we all hit up the casinos to play for a while....
it was time for afternoon tea and my gf wanted to eat shark fin... which is suppose to be another speciality in Macau, where there are a street full of shark fin soup shops at really affordable price.
We came across this one
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs421.snc3/24316_423446109111_506864111_5381389_8070160_n.jpg
it seems pretty crowded, so we gave it a try...
http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs401.snc3/24316_423446674111_506864111_5381409_594076_n.jpg
Sharkfin + "Fa Gaau"(dried fish stomach) chicken soup
at $80 bux a pot... we really weren't expecting much... the sharkfin was absolute crap, and the Fa Gaau was the cheapest crap as usual, the biggest suprise was actually the piece of chicken thigh that was use to make the broth.
None of us even bother to finish the soup except me....
After spending a total of $640 and came out in disappointment
We walked further down the street to try out the Shrimp Roe noodles recommended by that bitch on tv.
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs421.snc3/24316_423446484111_506864111_5381403_7473224_n.jpg
I didn't even bother to take pictures of it... cuz it sucked so bad. The dried Shrimp roe noodles we got at home was a hell lot better then what was offer and the Shrimp roe mixed with the noodles were tasteless
Again after buying some souvenir at the famous almond cookie shop, we heading back to the casino LOL
http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs421.snc3/24316_423446414111_506864111_5381400_7302583_n.jpg
After winning more money, we havn't decided where to have dinner, so my sis suggested to go Robuchon a Galera at Hotel Lisboa, which is rated as a Michelin 3 star restaurant...
nevertheless we never planned to go there at first, so she didnt make a reservation and neither did we meet the dress code. LOL... Guess we gotta go back another time.
For dinner we headed to an old fashion seafood restaurant.... ordered shark fin again... this time it cost 4 times as much for one bowl.
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs401.snc3/24316_423446744111_506864111_5381413_5132683_n.jpg
once again, this was a huge disappointment. All I could taste was white pepper in the broth
The rest of the food was again sub-par, We can find better at a local "dai pai dong" in Sham Shui Po in HK....
At the end of the day... it was a fun family day trip... but a huge disappointment as we spent way less then we expected and the food came out sucked.... I guess next time will be better as we will pre-book for Robuchon a Galera and thats probably the only place where the money is actually worth spending on.
I would much rather spend my money at the Venetian food court on overpriced fast food from Fatburger, pho hoa etc then those crap out there which is supposedly the macau speciality....

Mmm beef short ribs.
Is it better to eat at well known/larger established restaurants or smaller ones. When I went to HK and Macau with family we usually ate at the larger restaurants that seemed more sanitary, although that is probably not always the case. But then again, like in Vancouver, some of these small places have better food sometimes. Others are just crappy. I tried something off the street near one of the street markets in HK on my last day there, and I got sick lol.

The food is decent. Hyde is just a retard
I like to try new places. And most of the time I'm surprised (in a good way) at what I have been missing. Big restaurants are good but some small, run-down places are not bad either.

1st of all, i was in macau in january and trust me, ur thread does no justice. that "SO C WONG" bitch is epic gay and i have no idea why you would even want to follow her. she can't cook, can't even host a decent show. 9/10 items she put out on her show i'm like wtffffff that doesn't even look tasty. her book was just an endorsement deal to pwnnnn losers like you who thought she would be a great guide.
.Renn.Sport
03-29-2010, 04:42 PM
Actually, we didn't bother to go to any thing she endorsed but one that we just came by.... The whole trip was pretty much inspired by her... My gf is from Macau, even she say there aren't really anything that is worth the trip to Macau.... There is nothing Macau have that HK don't

Thing is, I don't need to go to Macau to find medicore portugese food when there are actually better ones in HK, same with other type of food... I shouldve just gotten a Fatburger at venetian food court since I can't get that in HK

I have been to the traps as well :lol Dumbo looked like it would be a neat Macau style 'cha chan teng'. Unfortunately it wasn't very good, and was overpriced.
I did find some good Portuguese restaurants, including Fernando's down at the very south end of Macau. I have gone there 3 times now, and each time it has been really good. Just don't go in the summer, as they don't have A/C!
I also stumbled across a pretty good macau cafe in the village of Coloane.. That is a pretty neat place to visit too, and the food was pretty good, for a decent price.
There is another we went to that had REALLY good African Chicken, but I can't remember the name unfortunately :(
As far as "Ah So" we actually just cooked one of her recipes last night (baked pork chops) and it was REALLY good. We've been to some of her recommended spots, and they have usually been pretty good representations of the food she is recommending. Usually we have been able to find better places ourselves, but if you haven't found a good "whatever" in HK or Macau, her suggestions are good to follow.
She definitely wouldn't have recommended Dumbo ;)
As far as Hyde, I have met him and he's a pretty nice guy in person. I 100% believe with all my heart that he has a psychological condition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudologia_fantastica), so I will never make fun of him for it. If you look past the bullshit, he is offering some good forum content here and there, so just leave him be.

These commercially endorsed recommendations are usually 'safe bets' rather than really fucking good. If you have experience with the area, stick to your own suggestions because the recommendations are usually for those who have zero experience/knowledge of the place.
When I was in Macau a few years ago, we were taken around by a relative of a family friend. He took us to all the tourist areas, but that's what is expected. Porkchop bun is pretty standard (they used to have them in honolulu cafe in Richmond which tasted similar imo, not sure if they still do) and I just remember eating a lot of fish and tomato :lol
The also had ice cream with powdered graham crackers of some sort, they called it 'mook hong' ice cream which translated to saw dust. I thought that was pretty tasty heh.
