Broke my forearm on whistler last saturday :( The emergency room helped me with x-ray and put a temporary support wrap on while the swelling is happening. The real cast is put on after a few days after the swelling has gone down, the doc said. The doctor told me to call the cast clinic in richmond hospital on Monday to schedule a cast appointment with Dr.Hughes on Wednesday.

So I called the cast clinic today. The receptionist lady, Karen, turned me down on the dot because "they dont accept patients without doctor's references". That's weird because the Whistler emergency doctor even told me which cast doctor to speak to, I would've thought a reference was made in the process..

So I called whistler hospital back... and explained to them what "Karen" said. They were confused but they agreed to fax the reference to Dr.Hughes office again. I called Karen back and she said "she'll call me back when she checks the fax later". O...kay.... After 3 hours she still didnt call back so I called her again, and now she said something along the lines of "Nothing can be done until the doctor approves it". Approve what??? All I want is an appointment. She sounded really impatient too and i wasnt sure why she was even in the health care industry. She left the office 5 min early too when I tried calling her one last time.

So now I sit at home, not even sure if I could even get casted on Wednesday. I feel uncomfortable going back to class with a temporary wrap because it's kinda flimsy. Does anyone have any experience with bone fractures to know what the hell to do to deal with a medical receptionist that you're not sure whether even wants to help you or not? Should I just walk into richmond hospital emergency room and get a direct reference? advice is appreciated:(

typing all of this with left hand has been long haha

Damn that sucks man, hope you get better though.

Btw how did you hurt yourself? Was it the snow conditions being hard? Or something else.

Snow was packed at whistler. Done it trying to do a jump. At least I broke it in style hahahaha

Jacking off with 1 hand means a very probable "spill"... I'll wait:)

I had Dr. Goetz at VGH when I ripped my bicep in 2 places.
It was a WCB claim though. I don't know if you can get him, but you can try.

He works specifically with Sports injuries and work related injuries.

But a broken arm isn't that serious.. so I dunno hah

go to the hospital and say "help my arms broken!"

probably needed to be more insistent with the receptionist... time and again receptionists think they're important... or think they're doctors themselves... and you just need to put them in their place and make it clear to the doctor when you see them to let them know about what a douche the receptionist was

i see this shit everywhere even with the receptionists that work for my family members

i know the gut reaction is to be super nice to them because you think it'll affect your visit, but it doesn't.. and doctors don't like this behaviour either its just that they're so busy they don't know about the customer service that goes on unless they get a complaint or compliment

going to the hospital on wednesday without an appt will probably result in having to go thru ER, waiting all fucking day, finally getting into outpatient care and getting a cast.

if it was me, id call my family doctor and see if i could get an appt tomorrow with him to get a referral directly, and if you dont have a family doctor, id goto a walk in clinic and explain the situation to the doctor there. either way you should end up with a referral which makes for a quicker process when going back to the hospital. hopefully they wont make you get xrays again and waste time with that.

Look how much they're getting this week though, I think it's fine. Just make sure you inspect a ramp before jumping on it... I landed on the apex of the 2nd ramp because I didnt know they were back to back, thats how it happened

Thanks man... I think I'll walk in the clinic and talk to them in person tmr.. even if it means having to waste a whole fucking day waiting around, better than to rely on the receptionist bitch.

go to your GP or any walk in and get the dr to refer you to someone and make an appointment. i dont know why but specialists need a GP's referal.

OR you can get a girl to sound confident and sound like she knows what she's talking about and make the appointment for you

my wife's a nurse and made an appointment for me without my GP's referal. the receptionist thought my wife was my GP's receptionist. i guess b/c she sounded so official and knew the medical terms :haha:

You're waiting around at home with a broken arm....you might as well go to the ER and wait for them to put a cast on. Why wait for a specific doctor?? just get a cast on it.

Go to a walk in clinic. Get them to write you a doctor's references. Then go to Dr.Hughes office give them the piece of paper and show them your arm. Then show her your gross broken arm and ask her if that's enough for you to get an appointment now.

Not that your arm breaking is funny, but the receptionist story reminded me of this;

I would go to the ER, wait as needed, get a cast. when I blew out my shoulder that's what I did, they knocked me out and plugged it back in and gave me a sling. sure it took a few hours, but what else are you gonna do?

Have you tried calling the ambalamps?

Jokes aside, I would try a walk-in clinic like stated above.

Lol, this thread is WIN.

And that receptionist sounds like a total bitch. IMO, if you can't get anything done right away, and the pain is unbearable or you're really bent on getting the cast done, visit a walk in clinic to get that note.

which part of arm?
I broke upper part and did surgery. have a metal plate on my bone.
not sure how doctors do it here in canada.
but if its actually broken in half, might be more accurate to get surgery.
Normally they have to cut your arm the length of the plate. I got surgery from one of the famous bone surgeons in Korea and he made two small cuts instead of one big one but yea get a cast first. If you go to the ER or walk in, they should put a temporary cast on until they get it fixed by a specialist

I broke my forearm into 2 a few years ago and the ER doc straight out of med school had no clue what he was doing... he didn't even straighten the bones and just put a temporary cast over my noticeably bent forearm that only went 2 inches above the break. The next day, I went to see my GP and he referred me to an orthopedic surgeon who I got to see 3 days later. He had to re-break my arm in order to straighten it... using no anesthetics or pain killers.

So yeah, get an appointment with a specialist ASAP. If you're not having any luck go to your GP.

you!

This is what you do....

Grab a wheel chair, sit in in. Have your friend push you into the waiting room. You need to act like you're the person definitely next to receive medical attention.

Broke my arm a few years ago at Seymour. Bruised up my leg so much I couldn't walk. So my friend pushed me in the waiting room. With a temporary sling over my shoulder, head tilted one way and just with a look of agonizing pain, you'll definitely be 'Priority'.

Whew finally got an appointment. After calling the specialist directly and talking to them, apparently they really do have a billion processes to go thru before giving appointments. Sure makes it nerve-racking for someone w/ a fracture and dont know what's going on behind the scenes.

Thx for the help guys

Was it a compound fracture or a hairline fracture?
If it was just a measly hairline fracture I'd just sling it and not waist my time with a new cast.
Just be careful.

Practice masturbating with your left hand.

Not only does it give your right hand a break, thereby reducing the chance of repetitive stress injury, but it help you become ambidextrous!

I fractured my forearm 8 years ago, I went to children's hospital at that time and everything was very straightforward.
