NEW YORK – Authorities say a 21-year-old man has plunged to his death in an apparent suicide jump off the Empire State Building during the evening rush hour.

Police say the man was dead when rescue workers arrived at the 102-story skyscraper shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities wouldn't immediately release his name or say from which floor he had jumped.

The Empire State Building is the third-tallest building in the United States. More than 30 people have committed suicide at the building since it opened in 1931.

Before Tuesday, the most recent was believed to have been in 2006, when a man jumped from a vacant office on the 66th floor.

The skyscraper reaches 1,454 feet to the top of its lightning rod.

hmmm im curious as to how he was able to get outside of the building to jump.
i remember none of the windows were able to open, and the very top observation deck has very high fences.

He had to jump during rush hour. What a selfish dude trying to cause all the havoc during that time. What is he trying to prove? If you have to, do it some other time. GEEZ!

this is so sad to see.

i think if he only had the proper help this wouldn't have happened.
i mean whatever his problems were/are would be insignificant in 5 years...

This is what happens when we neglect our young people...

I think there may have been more than 30 people that jumped out of the World Trade Center towers during the 9/11 attacks...

i don't think that's relevant at all, the people that jumped weren't trying to end their own lives, a lot of them were just trying to escape the intense heat/smoke in the aftermath of 9/11
