: New York 2010: Hyundai Sonata 2.0T Debuts With 274-HP, 34-MPG Highway Rating

jpark

Newyork autoshow debuted the all new 2011 2.0t Sonata 274hp with regular fuel. this can be a real hit, i am most likely consiering to trade my 07 sonata in to get one of these.. impressive numbers and to hyundai haters, hate as much as you want (cuz your gonna look like a fool)

When Hyundai debuted the new 2011 Sonata in 4-cylinder trim, the company announced that it would not introduce a V6 model. The Korean automaker was still planning to go head-to-head with its V6-powered competitors, however, and today we found out exactly what with.

Just unveiled at the New York Auto Show, the new 2011 Sonata 2.0T is the first Hyundai to get turbocharging and direct-injection. As the name suggests, the engine is a small 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and when combined with a twin-scroll turbocharger and Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology it makes a class-leading 274-hp and gets 34-mpg on the highway. City fuel economy is set at 22-mpg. As for the turbocharged engine’s torque number, it is equally impressive, rated at 269 ft-lbs from just 1800 rpm to 4500 rpm. Better yet, it does all this on regular fuel.

Helping to deliver both impressive fuel economy and performance is Hyundai’s new six-speed automatic transmission, with Hyundai’s Shiftronic manual shifting. Plus, all 2.0T models come with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Added advantages to this setup include a lighter overall chassis. Not only does the turbocharged 4-cylinder weigh less than a V6 engine, but because Hyundai never had to design the car’s frame to carry a heavier V6 motor, the basic platform weighs less. And a lighter overall curb weight results in improved fuel economy and acceleration, not to mention handling and braking. Hyundai lists the new Sonata 2.0T at 3,338 lbs, making it the lightest of its competitors. In fact, with a weight to power ratio of 12.2 lbs per hp, the Sonata 2.0T has a better setup than the new Camaro V6.

Pricing for the 2.0T model has yet to be released but we expect it to be competitive with, if not undercut, current V6 offerings from the main competitors.

When's the gen coupe getting a 274hp 4 cylinder?

turbo 4 sedan... this > current legacy GT at this rate.

cant wait till they shove this in genesis 2.0GT coupe... that'd be awesome.

downhiller// apparently theyre selling more 3.8's than 2.0's right now.. according to white rock hyundai.

if they shove this engine into the Gen Coupe then they'll have to introduce the Gen Coupe V8 to push the whole line upwards.

sure the new turbo 2L provides great hp/tq #s Vs V6 competitors, however for a DD, a turbo 4 will never be as easy to drive in the city like a 6 cylinder. I have a 240hp RDX and I used to have a 270hp TL.....on paper the #s look similar, but my TL was way more enjoyable to drive as a DD. Trying to change lanes when someone is making a left turn is way more nerve racking in my RDX due to turbo lag....nothing is nicer than having some good torque off idle.....

1990TSI
08-07-2010, 12:34 AM
hyundai is using such a small turbo, if you're in the right gear theres no lag.

the coupe 2.0 builds full boost and torque at something like 2300rpm

it all sounds very impressive, and i have yet to have seen one upclose, get inside, and perhaps drive one.

Personally, from past experience. I am far from a hyundai fan.

The negatives i noticed were:
-cheap quality
-not enough insulation (lots of road noise)
-not enough rust protection (local 2001-2002 hyundais rusting already in vancouver?)

i've never seen a problem with their drivetrain though.

It seems like hyundai is stepping their game, and if they turned a new leaf. That's great for them, i always like to see that. I just hope they fixed the issues that i was once dissapointed with.

Have you experienced any of the steering problems with the Sonata that is all over the internet?

It seems to pull left at highway speeds according to reports. There was even a recall issued in the states back in September.

I'm looking to maybe get in a Sonata as well.

!LittleDragon
03-28-2011, 03:39 PM
I've read about this as well but haven't experienced it. I have a feeling people are just complaining about torque steer. Common on a FWD car with this much power. My solution to that is.... hand on wheel when accelerating.

the_law82
03-28-2011, 03:54 PM
Thanks for the quick response.

That's what I initially thought too, but a lot of claims have indicated they know what torque steering is and that it happens while coasting as well.

Hopefully the newer vehicles have that fixed as that 0% for 84 months is a pretty good deal.

I just hope they fixed the issues that i was once dissapointed with.

yep, cheap interior quality is definatly correct for the older ones.. even my 07 feels outdated compared to 2005 accords.

but road noise is not realy heard in my car.. well at least before i molested with aftermarket parts and the reason why my father bought it in the first place (used to be his car) because interior cabin was fairly quiet for a cheap budget 4 cylinder midsize sedan.

is this promotion only for the 2.0 manual?
so it doesn't apply to the 2.0 auto?

The 2.0T only comes in auto. It's part of the promotion. I don't know how long it will last as these promotions are on a month to month basis.

I have some spare car cost canada reports. If someone is really interested in the Sonata or Genesis Coupe, I can run a report for you.

Here's my feedback from my test drive yesterday.

Car: 2.4L GLS Sonata.

- car drove as expected, soft suspension, fairly quiet while coasting but pretty loud when accelerating, steering is very light (must be due to the electronic power steering). Having test driven other cars like the TL and TSX, I found the suspension to be too soft, but compared to the Camry and Accord, it felt similar. It did not have the pulling to the left side that is plastered all over the internet, but I'd still be careful and make sure you test drive the specific car you are picking up. The sales person indicated that if I wanted a tighter feel, I should try the 2.0T as it has a different suspension set up.

- I found the interior to be cheap. For example, the interior door handle felt like it was going to break off, the glove compartment also uses a cheap plastic. However, the dash seems pretty modern and it does come with bells and whistles like bluetooth, usb for ipod, aux-in, heated seats, etc.

- The GLS with the cloth seats seemed really cheap (like some sort of recycled material), the leather in the limited trim seemed better but the quality also seemed cheap. Bottom line, I didn't feel it to be luxurious on the inside, my MR2 feels more luxurious.

Overall conclusion, good bang for the buck. It comes with a lot of options included where the competitors would have them as options. However, they have to cut costs somewhere. It's good value as long as you manage your expectations and don't expect it to be as luxurious as other brands.

In terms of the 0% offer, the sales person said the promotion will likely end at the end of the month (but of course, take that with a grain of salt since they are biased).

Good luck!

This is exactly how I felt (about interior wise). I just got back from the vancouver auto show, and had to check out Hyundai, because I was planning in the long run to pick up a sonata or genesis. When I sat in the Sonata, I was expecting the interior to somewhat have similar texture characteristics with other luxury cars that might be on par such as vw, audi, bmw etc.

Unfortunately, it felt really (cheap), like artificial plastic and leather. I can't really explain it, but it was like a hybrid between luxury and cheap
Interior was nicer than my suby (by far), but not as nice as the interior of european built cars. Idk, made me have second thoughts about picking one up.

Lol... of course you'd be disappointed if you think like that. I went into it knowing that I'm buying a Hyundai and not an Audi, BMW, VW, etc... So far, I'm still satisfied with it a week later. Compare it to the Camry and Accord, you'll be more impressed.

Was there a hyundai Gensis sedan there? That should be more in line with the BMW/Audi/etc. while the sonata is more comparable to the camery etc.

I completely agree. You just have to manage your expectations.

I think we are looking for more luxury so we've geared our search appropriately now.
