I've been reading up on some of these things. Just wondering if anyone has done it locally.

I was planning to do something like this for a friend and start fiberglassing it as well. Any pointers or tips will be great

majority of the stuff i read, were not very informative.

I've seen a DIY job on a 1986 Cressida on the sideskirts, replacing the chrome trim there with some rubber material. The car was a dark blue, so it meshed pretty well with the car.

If my OEM lip goes (it's pretty beat but still standing), I'm doing a home Depot job or getting one from a Volvo.

i lost the oem lip of the car and didnt feel like paying a few hundred bucks to get one from the dealer and get it painted. here is the one i did. i cut some extra pieces and used double sided mounting tape to double layer the corners so it wont fold in on itself.

I've heard it doesn't look very good for sideskirts. There's a pretty good thread about it on 8thcivic.com

I've seen it done a few times... and it looks good from far, but it's far from good.

But I'd rather see it done right than on the cheap...

That's garage door liner.

that is actually pretty as hell, what is it exactly?

What you need:

- Bottom Garage Door Seal (Home Depot is the cheapest.. $14 + tax)
- 3M double sided tape (From Home Depot as well..$5 +tax)
- Sissors
- Super Glue (optional if u dont want the foam lip ripping off the tape)

First you would stick double sided tape on the short side of the foam or glue the foam onto the tape. (optional for glue) then just peel off the other side of the tape and stick it onto your bumper. and u MIGHT need to trim the foam to make it fit. Pretty easy and simple. takes about 20 mins if u do it carefully.

If you really enjoy it, u can also screw it on after u taped it. Personally for me its a temporary lip until i find a perfect one. But if i cant, i might just drill it in..

I saw something similar on a neon years ago, then in late 2007 I posted on the G35 forums and since then it took off like wildfire, a lot of guys are doing it now, here's a link to my original thread there....

http://g35driver.com/forums/interior-exterior/189994-make-custom-carbon-fiber-rubber-splitter-your-aftermarket-bumpers.html

also I posted a thread about it here long time ago but it got buried, RS should really have a dedicated DIY sticky area for stuff like this

here's a full quote with directions for those interested.... gimme some thanks'ss bitzhess

Lowered my car, and dislike bumper scrapes as you all do so I went to Home Depot and got a rubber garage door strip I cut it, and used 3M tape to stick it on. There is a few different ways to do this, and I did it my way. Pics below.

UPDATED PICTURES FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THIS MOD

this is what you buy at home depot, it's a garage door liner that goes on the bottom of your garage door to soften the hit when your garage door hits the floor, so if you can't find it in the garage accessories section, ask a HD employee

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/032108210530.jpg

this is the tape you buy at Lordco or Napa

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/041808172848.jpg

And this is how you install it onto the bumper

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/050308203434.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/050308203523.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/050308203555.jpg

and here's a picture from a few months ago the first day I installed it

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/G35/IMG_2452.jpg

and as you can see it survived being a snow plow through winter, so it's very tough and can definitely take a beating
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/Snow2.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/Snow4.jpg

and here it is now, you can see it sags slightly, but like I said I used it as a snow plow so a little has to give

a few pics showing a different way of doing it as well

added new pic of a reversed section of the lip so you can attach the lip 3 different ways which is even better.

once you paint it to match your car it also gives the appearance of your car being lower than it actually is, while still protecting it.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/062508205855.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/IMG_0023.jpg

and this is how it looks once you reverse it and do install it with the rear side facing frontwards, and as you can see by looking at the middle section of the bumper, since it's very flexible you can curve it to fit and contour to pretty much every front bumper, but it's hard enough not to sag

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/Lambo%20White/IMG_9630.jpg
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/Lambo%20White/IMG_9631.jpg

you can paint it before or after it's on the car, prior painting with flex additive in the paint is a good thing, but you can't go wrong with the chinese newspaper method either, lol

I'm not sure fiberglassing it does anything because the beauty of this lip is that it shrugs off light curbing and bruises because it's soft rubber....

fiberglassing it only makes it lose its merits.

you know it bro! the 3M tape is super sticky, and the lip is very tough and yet flexible, winning combo... and this picture says more than words can :D

Make sure you really clean off the areas which the adhesive will be attaching to the bumper.

I used Windex then alcohol wipes on the bumper so that the 3M tape sticks better. Also make sure you are using the outdoor mounting tape. That stuff is much better. Don't go anything other than 3M.

I thought u would at least paint it in your garage !

ay ay now, no need to exclamation mark me :p there's a good explanation for that.... I was over at my friends house installing his lip as well and his garage wasn't available

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g169/jc2100/P1010299.jpg

that was the only time I painted it while on the car, it's not a good idea as spray paint gets literally everywhere.... it didnt really matter to me I was getting a new paintjob at that time anyway.....
I have my shop do it prior to installing on the car, that way they can add flex additive which spray cans don't have, that's the best way to do it.

yea dude, my bumper is fiberglass and only a few inches off the ground, so I need protection.. and yea it may seem ghetto at first but there is undeniable genius in it you gotta admit...
because there is nothing on the market quite like this, all the lips you can buy are fiberglass or carbon fiber... the closest thing would be polyurethane which can take a pounding as well, but these are all bigger style lips that fully attach themselves onto the lower portion of your bumper... the HD lip is something nice and subtle that still serves it's purpose really well, protects your kit and pretty easy on the eyes as well.

but yea my car at the end of the day is just a nissan, I drove that thing from Van to fckin Toronto bro, 4200km through rough terrain :haha:

Even OEM plastic lips will do this. I ripped a GTX lip spoiler off one of my Jettas while rolling over a gigantic speed bump and one of the corners got caught in the lower control arm, just half an inch away from the axle. The 3M tape mentioned earlier in this thread is just as strong as most of the plastic/rusted metal screws that the majority of manufacturers use to put on their lip spoilers.

it's really pliable, it'll just bend to form with your bumper. you should make sure to use really good quality durable double sided tape if you do end up doing it though

SpuGen

I know it's pliable.
I'm using Pro Form 958.

The problem is, my driveway is slanted and I get about halfway out of my garage, then the bumper hits the pavement, hard. I've tried using blocks, and even built a mini ramp.
Shit's not happening. lol.
The "lip" will just rip off if I even bother to put this on. Or worse. Catch the pavement and rip off my bumper.

and secondly, I will be at the RS summer meet with my new wheels and setup, (fingers crossed they're completed on time) and I would like to invite you over to inspect it and check it out..... but the problem with that would be SINCE you had a fully riced out Cavalier, this shows you've got absolutely 0 taste in automotive styling, so your opinion is worth as much as a huge ricer wing on a 120hp FWD Cavalier. Installed it on my uncle's 91 Accord when I was in the States a few weeks back. It looked REALLY clean, and colour-matched the side and rear lips.

No pics because I didn't have a camera and left their house right after.

Can't wait to see this one... maybe the kids who insist on sticking their wheels out the side of the car past the fenders can slap some of that shit on the wheel well edge to keep within the letter of the law :lol

Maybe all the foam body kit ricers can have their own trophy at the RS Summer meet :haha:

Mine stick out 4-6 inches but I still don't stoop to such levels. Then again I'm one of those douche bag big truck drivers cracking windshields and blinding everybody with my 55 watt halogen lights but hell I'm a little inbread.
Maybe at the RS summer meet I'll get an RS trophy for Most lacking of foam tape inbread douche bag 2010.
I'm not holding my breath that would be one expensive engraving.

material looks like this close up. but shaped more flat.

http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Images/DB_Detail/009035.jpg

i bought both of them

one feels like pipe insulation

the other is hard rubber.

i'm thinking of using the pipe insulation kind since its more easier to twist around corners

Is that the best one for the DIY?

Im doing this for my car since my aftermarket front bumper got fucked, and im puting the OEM back in. Putting the lip on so it looks lower to match the aftermarket sideskirts / rear bumper

Is the TAGO garage seal the one that has the most width to make the bumper lower? or would that be the frost king brand? Thanks

that's the same type of stuff I ended up using but mine was from Rona.
This stuff is super tough and has saved my front bumper a couple of times!

I don't know how much clearer it could be explained, the pictures show you exactly how you can install it.

this is the typical way

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/032108210530.jpg

and it looks like this

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/050308203555.jpg

and if you just install it backwards to the other side it will be more subtle like this

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z75/Adon604/Lambo%20White/IMG_9630.jpg

and if you put the tape on the other side of the lip it will look like Leopolds lip which is the most noticeable.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p298/shortcakesz/IMG_1209.jpg

either way you install it, they all look pretty good and more importantly serves it's true purpose of protecting your bumper

Ah, I understand now.. so whatever side you are applying to the bumper.. you would cover that WHOLE side with tape? I noticed that the red stripe only overed a small ammount on the table one

G-spec

no that's the wrong size tape I ran out the proper one, the tape you wanna buy is at Lordco, and it's PF 956 as pictured below, it's like twice as wide as in the pic you see, sticks a lot better

probably dont' need to use the thicker type but it's probably safer.

thing is when mine ripped off, i was quite glad i used the thinner one,

just try to buy the black tape, which i have a lot of trouble finding btw. so i bout what G-Spec bought, but the thinner type.

how about this onto my existing spoon lip?
lol maybe that's overkill... but I wanted to add something to just help from scraping the lip all the time. Probably install in a way it's not so noticeable.
And I still have to do this for my dad's BMW. Hell, might as well do it for my sis' too.

I think it would look funny on the back because of the angle of the lip.

I just asked the store associates and found them. I bought a long roll for 15.xx plus tax, and also the 3m double sided tape for 15.xx as well at the home depot across from bellis fair. Went to richmond lordco to see if the tape was any cheaper but it was 17.xx if I remember correctly
