RS Has a New Home!
SkinnyPupp
04-05-2010, 08:14 AM
Here we are, in our new home. Not far from most people, in Seattle, WA!
We're now hosted on a pair of Xeon servers, one with a Lynnfield (Core i7 8xx) core, and the other with Core 2 Quad.
I also changed some things around in the background. Actually right now, most people shouldn't notice anything. But this should leave room for more improvements down the line. Mostly, it should feel faster (at least once everything is optimized) and more stable (we no longer have a bum ethernet card we're trying to rely on)
Anyway, I'll leave it up for the night for testing, for the folks who are smart enough to edit their hosts file. It will take a while for the DNS switch to propagate anyway.
Happy RSing!

It's quite simple on mac. Run terminal then type in "$ sudo nano /private/etc/hosts" then add the IP and the web address. Save it then VOILA!
The only thing I still can't get working are on Mobile devices. Now I can't surf RS while I'm on the can!
Wouldn't be as fun if the rest of the membership didn't come back.

Couple updates:
1) Avatars and attachments are working now
2) I just realized how many bounced emails we get. There were about 70,000 subscriptions to threads, many of which go to old email addresses that bounce back. That resulted in thousands of emails coming to us each day. So I removed all subscriptions to all threads. If you want to subscribe to a thread, do it again.

Follow the instructions that skinnypupp posted, but for windows 7 you have to click start menu, get to notepad, and right click, run as admin, and look for the host files.
From then on just edit the host file as required, save it, close your firefox or IE and restart your browser. Should work though.

go to the folder c: \windows\system 32\drivers\etc
right click on the "host" file and go to properties and uncheck "read-only"
open notepad (right click run as admin)
open a file in c: \windows\system 32\drivers\etc (have "all files" showing not just txt files)
open the file called "host"
scroll to the bottom of that file and type in
"174.37.158.171 www.revscene.net"
save the file (ctrl+s)
your done

Minor glitch?
If I go to User CP a list of recently replied to, subscibed threads comes up BUT it's missing a bunch. I have to view ALL subscribed threads to see the missed ones that were replied to recently.
Also noticed that if I didn't reply to a thread (unsubcribed) from say, 2 days ago, it will remain highlighted. Before, those threads would "time out?" and not be highlighted.
I know you're still fine tuning, just wanted to point these out.

ie:
You log on at 8am (you were last on at midnight). All the the threads from say 1am-8am that were responded to would be highlighted. The way it is now, all the threads from 2 days before are still highlighted unless you read them.
The first issue I mentioned:
You click User CP and your subscribed threads that were recently (within the last 4 hours) responded to show up. If you go to the bottom right of that box and click View All Subscribed Threads, a bunch more appear IN BETWEEN (not just after) the initial list, which should have been show in the User CP in the first place.

some threads r still taking a long ass time to load, ranging from 3secs to 10secs.
and then theres the fail and thank buttons, which takes like 5secs to show up after u click it where as previously its instant. same with quoting a post, it takes like 5-10secs to load the post reply page after i click quote.

Yes, I found the problem. When we are at peak load with 1000 users or so, we are saturating the 10 mbps connection between the two servers. We can either optimize a bit (which was done, we'll have to wait and see) or pay to upgrade to a faster connection. We'll see how it looks during peak time tomorrow.

^ while your at it could you revert back to the old system (reffering to new posts thing)? a couple members have noticed it but the majority i guess do not care, and you said it is less of a load for the server, so win win?
