Looking to buy a netbook or a budget notebook for under 400
Netbook with n450, 6 cell battery, 1-2 gb ram.
Or a budget laptop with 15.4" or lower screen
Use for itunes, downloading music, typing, browsing, some small photo editing, etc
I quickly browsed some sites and found some $400 or less net/notebooks
Acer Aspire 15.6" Laptop featuring AMD Athlon 64 Processor TF-20 (AS5517-5178)

ASUS Eee PC 1005PE Black Intel Atom N450 1GB 250GB 10IN 1024X600 WLAN Windows 7 Starter 14HOUR
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=49311&vpn=1005PE-PU17-BK&manufacture=ASUS
Which one is the best? Is windows 7 starter ok? Or should I buy a notebook with windows 7 home premium, like in the 1st link?
Or some better net/notebooks than these within the price range?
Thanks

I have a 14 inch e-machines version of the acer(same company) that you posted above. It's faster than a netbook and will do every you want it to but the build quality is poor and there customer service sucks.I would only get if you really know your way around a laptop. I would spend a bit more or wait for a deal and get something better. You can get a 15 inch dell with a Intel Dual Core T4400 for $459.
Look at redflagdeals.com for some good deals.

i lug around my netbook quite a bit so fi you do the same make sure weight and size won't be an issue...

If I had to chose from the 4 you listed, I'd get the Asus.

^ what the fuck? it's that crippled??
I've been looking at <$400 netbooks and I think this (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5732581&Sku=L49-1210%20CA) is a pretty good deal.
One thing that people seem to agree on is looking for a netbook with good resolution. Personally, I'm looking for a 10.1" netbook with a resolution of 1366x768. That and a 6 cell battery as this is for my gf who won't really be doing much other than word processing / browsing.

HP210 is the only choice for 10.1 with 1366x768 with HD hardware acceleration

I would stay away from LG, personal preferrence.
Yes, didn't realize u can't change the wallpaper until got 2 of the starter edition. That's stupid. wallpaper is something so basic, why cripple that?
I got a VAIO W for my wife in Seattle Premium outlet 2 weeks ago. It's the old N280 (but brand new sealed). it has 1280x768, 8 hours battery, bluetooth, 250GB HD, a/b/g/n for $350 + a free refurbished Webbie camera (youtube friendly camera worth $80). Not too bad for previous generation. Futureshop was trying to clear it out at $400~450 and no freebie. :p

Just picked up an Acer Aspire Timeline 1810tz.
Love it, and the specs are really good. For $499 from FS, this unit is great in terms of battery life and power.
If you can spend about $100 more, this thing is worth it.
Wow, THAT is pretty fucking rediculous.
yap.
Bought 2 Starter Edition (Gateway N450) at the same time (one for my in-law). When trying to change theme/wallpapaer, found out the option is missing.
Search google on W7 Starter Edition Wallpaper, then found out "Personalization" is removed from Starter Edition.

I agree, you'll be much happier with a CULV notebook, the atoms powered computers are useless if you have more than one app/window open at once.
heres another CULV for 500.

From the reivews, it's draw backs is the trackpad can be sluggish, the keyboard isn't all that comfortable, and the trackpad button is bar style.
i did a quick google and got a review:

Alternatively, you could try the wind 12. using a AMD cpu, you won't see as much battery life, but better performance.

this is 419 USD. but we're like at 0.9x in exchange rate :D
it has a synaptics trackpad so you might be able to get multitouch on it (i'm a big fan of 2 finger scroll).
here is a review:

but if you were to stick in your budget, i would go with the asus netbook. multitouch. and i've heard good things from their line of netbooks, plus they've a good reputation as a company.

i highly recommend msi, it's really nicely built, and competitively priced. you also get the option to overclock up to +24%. your price range of $400 max is good enough. if you are really tight on money i can sell you mine for cheap lol
