So I pulled the tripod release instead of loosening the rotate...(tired and dark, it sucked). the 55-250 IS lens mount is cracked open.

The body looks fine, taking pictures with the kit lens is fine. Is there any other ways to check if theres any issues with it? I'm wondering if theres a built in damage or shock sensor?

Would the lens be able to be repaired at all? Are the local camera shops repairers or would I need to ship it to canon?

Thanks for any help, tonights photo session was painful. :(

Been there, done that. :( It seems the camera is fine, but the lens may just need a new mount. Take it back to where you bought it, as they can send it in for you.

+1. I dropped my then new (in 1994) Tamron 70-210mm f2.8 by releasing the tripod plate instead of tilting it. I was in shock. The lens was fine though, as it's built like a tank. I still use it on occasion.

I would make sure your auto focus is still accurate. Also go outside and try the AI Servo mode to make sure it works as well.

Also if you like the lens, send it in to Canon for a quote. If not replace it :)

Don't know about OP, but in my case it was one of those cheap $30 London Drugs tripods that had the plate release and tilt lever close together, and they were of similar look & feel.

There's no damage or shock sensor in lenses sadly. If you're worried about it or if the IS or autofocus are wonky, you can contact Canon Canada directly and ship it off for repair (though if it's user damage, it won't be under warranty).
