I believe it's consecutive landings/kills. You can do that when you get the superstar too, just by running through a billion minions in the duration of invincibility.

Until I watched thisI thought I read somewhere that the clip there was done on an emulator using slo-mo. I can't imagine anyone pulling that off on normal speed. ;)

And yes, in SMB 3, you can get 1UP by landing on 9 enemies in a row, and every 3 after that (ie 12th, 15th, etc.) without landing on the ground or a block. A little-known trick is to use those bouncy music note blocks and vines between jumps, as both do not count as either. ;)

Still got my SMB3 official Nintendo guide from like 1990. Best $3USD I (or should I say my dad) ever spent. :D
