Just in case no-one wants to read or click through, here's the coles.
Old gay couple are real old, so they draft living wills and name each other beneficiaries for each others estates and medical decisions.
One dude falls and is fucked, so the other guy makes the decisions on his estate and health right? Wrong. The state doesn't recognize their union.
State sells everything they own to pay for the medical stuff, including heirlooms and shit. Sell the house, the car, leave the cats out. Cats are probably dead.
State puts other dude in a home because he is still pretty old. (and they need to sell the house out of, you know, greed.) They put him in a different home than his partner and don't let him visit.
First old guy dies. He hasn't seen his bf since the state put him in a home.

^ should also add that they sold everything dirt cheap, and didn't keep track of what they were selling or whose it was.

I don't know why people are so homphobic that they have to screw another person so badly because of their insecurities. You know the truth is, if the couple weren't gay this wouldn't happen. Fucking homophobes.

this is cruel but why would they stay in a state that does not recognize their gay marriage?

Well, there is a little bit of good news. A court-appointed lawyer fought and got him released from the nursing home and he now has a law firm representing him. July 16th, 2010 is when this goes before the courts.
I have a feeling those fuckers are gonna get what's coming to them.

^ But I don't think any sort of monetary compensation can make up for what the guy still alive went through... at best, this case will serve as an example for the future and hopefully shit like this doesn't happen again.

Incidents like this happen everyday across America. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/19/for-same-sex-couples-equality-in-the-hospital/#more-27487

The worst part to me is that this was the action of the state. Which is run by elected officials, who in theory are doing to bidding of the constituents who elected them.
So for every Californian who is saying this was monstrous, they need to recognize that this is in part their own fault.

unfortunately the people who are truly responsible, the ones that made the decision that lead this this, will not get into any trouble regardless how the case goes.
the compensation will be paid for by the government, which is everyone's else tax money.
I am sure the staff won't be held personally accountable...

I don't understand what sexual orientation has to do with being a beneficiary of a will.
If I wanted to leave all my stuff to some random bum on the street, I should be able to do that in my will.
For fuck sakes, people can legally name their pets as beneficiaries in the states...

yup, hence why the state is going down real hard...really really really hard.
Their only line of defense is that the will probably states that "my partner/husband/wife" XXX will be the sole owner of my property.
And thats the legal point where this battle is going to take place. But yes, a WILL can be left to anyone.
You can probably write something like this in your will and still be valid "the next guy in the purple shirt sitting 3 seats away from this seat, gets 100,000 dollars."

in this day in age you would think things like this won't happen.
what pisses me off is when these people think they're doing the right thing..they are all self-righteous.
i mean, my own mother explicitly told me that I can't watch ellen or will and grace... I don't normally watch either so it's not a big deal.. but, it's stupid.. but, then again she's Chinese and christian... how much more self-righteous/ignorant can you get.
And like another poster said, what's the point for the man, his last years with his partner was a wash... no money can buy that back.

I'm sure people have thought about this before but....thank God we live in Canada.
Wow that's really shitty... Best of luck to him
I chuckled a bit when I read the title of this thread, the three words in the OP, then the OP's username.
But yes, shitty story, I'm sure karma will get them.

Interesting however, I do not see any mention of why not only one person's life, but two people's lives (including the life of the alleged 'victim' in this case) have been all but destroyed as a result of this issue. Even in the worst case scenario, I should not have to lose every cherrished item I own because I was allegedly assulted by my 'room mate'. I should also not have lost my pets because of a Deputy Council's decision to lock them out of the house without consulting me or any family members (Including the alleged perpetrator of a 'crime' that had not yet been proven). Red tape should never be used as a bandage for beaurocracy.
Still really fucking uncalled for.

For fuck sakes, people can legally name their pets as beneficiaries in the states...Not true. According to my lawyer friend, even in BC you can't legally "cut" certain children (say one of them was a real a-hole to you) out from your will. That child CAN contest and win his/her "fair share". There's a legal (ie Latin) term for this but I can't think of it at the moment. Maybe a lawyer can chime in here.

you can legally cut a sibling out in the will....but you have to specify the reason why you are cutting them out.
