You also have Manny Malhotra who is 1/2 South Asian.
The first South Asian in the NHL was Robin Bawa. Born in Duncan and played on my brothers ball hockey team during the off season.

In about 10 years you will see a lot of Asians entering the NHL because there's a lot more Asians kids play competitive hockey now.

Can't forget Tony mckegney. For some reason in every hockey card I had of his he was smiling. Even if the picture was showing him getting a elbow to the face.

Originally he signed with a WHA team in Birmingham Alabama but they dropped him before he even played a game because people didn't want a black man playing on there team.

True dat, I know quite a few asian players that are pretty good and damn fast!

It's just a matter of time, once the 2nd/3rd gen asians get older more and more will be playing at a higher level and i'm sure a select few will be in the NHL full-time.

Okay let's get one thing straight here...the reason there are fewer Asians in the NHL isn't because there's some racist conspiracy by whitey to keep the yellow man down...it's because Asians just aren't as good at sports.

Don't bullshit me. We all know that for every tall, muscled Asian dude, there are nine short, beanpole motherfuckers that couldn't keep up in a non-contact sport like tennis let alone a rough game like hockey. Paul Kariya and Brandon Yip are aberrations...guys with good enough hands to make it in the NHL.

But the vast majority of Asians couldn't possibly handle the NHL...nor would we want them anywhere near it. Could you imagine if affirmative action mandated that each NHL team needed a bunch of Chinese guys on the team? It would either bring down the quality of the product on the ice...or those will be the deadest Chinese guys on ice once a big hitter lays them out when they have their head down.

If I just delete this thread, will all the thanks and fails just go bye-bye? Seriously, this thread is obviously just a breeding ground for retardation and it would be in everyone's best interest if we just forgot all about it.

That and I would have to ban the OP to make sure this garbage doesn't happen again.

I think location and diet has a lot to do with a persons size. Compare people living in India and People who's parents are from India but are born here. The ones born here are a lot bigger.

List of Asian in the CFL and NFL.

Asians in the NFL
aruki Nakamura (Baltimore Ravens S) is Japanese.

Dat Nguyen (retired LB) is Vietnamese.

Noriaki Kinoshita (Atlanta Falcons WR) is Japanese.

Chris Gocong (Philadelphia Eagles LB) is Filipino.

Eugene Amano (Tennessee Titans G) is Filipino.

Walter Achiu was the first Chinese NFL player (1927-8 Dayton Triangles)

CFL
Bryan Chiu
Norm Chow
Norm Kwong

probably missing a few.

Okay.

Now name all the black people in the NFL.

How long is that list?

How many black kids play football compared to Asians. Its not something most Asian kids dreamed about when growing plus their parents wanted then to become doctors.

Look at hockey how many blacks are in the NHL now? Jarome Iginla would have never played hockey if me was born in the states and his mom was black.

Race is not the determining factor when it comes to how good someone is at sports. If that was the case You would see a lot more blacks from Africa in pro basketball and football.

I think both Manic and ronin have very valid points. I think it's combination of both. The majority of Asians are ectomorphs and so are usually not as big, fast etc as their mesomorph and endomorph counterparts (ie. "the black and white guys"). Most sports that are popular in north America happen to be sports that are hard hitting and physical happen to be sports where physical frame is an important aspect that determines how well you can play or succeed. Some sports such as swimming, ping pong (hey it's in the olympics), and baseball even to name a few, don't require such a large frame as football or hockey. But then again, unless your family is very well off or some what-white washed, most Asians are not exposed to sports such as hockey as it is really expensive. Whereas sports such as swimming, soccer are very cheap to play. And you will see many Asians in the world excelling at these sports.
This argument could even be tied into why hockey isn't as popular as say basketball in America. It is because hockey is generally more expensive to play than sports such basketball and so there are more exposed to it. All you need to play basketball is a ball and a broken up court, whereas in hockey you need equipment, rink etc. Here in Canada there is so much emphasis and funding in minor hockey and rep hockey and that is why we are so good at the international level. Canadians don't have some kind or magical gene or something that enables us to be so good. But I'm digressing into another topic.

*golf clap* on the posters listing a handful of gifted Asian players. Our genetics go back centuries of poor dieting. Rich asian parents can afford to put their kids in hockey but can't pay for physical attributes (not yet atleast haha).

Couple years ago the Pittsburgh Pirates signed the first Indian professional baseball players.

Barry Bongs marketing agent thought that with a billion people in India, someones got to have some skills transferable to baseball. So they went their and held a reality contest or something with the winner having a chance to go to the States for baseball.

The winner had a solid throwing arm and could pitch in cricket. So they helped him learn how to throw a pitch in baseball, and he had a fast ball comparable to rookie pitchers coming into the league.

Face it, there are way more white kids playing hockey than asian. Hockey is one of the most expensive team sports to get into - equipment is expensive, and getting rink time is not easy. If your parents don't support you, good luck.

Most asian parents aren't gonna take you to the rink at 5am, or build you a rink in the back yard. It just isn't in our culture to do these things. After school, you do your homework and/or play video games, not go shooting pucks into a washing machine for hours, every day.

And then getting drafted, and actually playing for a NHL team? No easy feat at all.

Sure, many of us here may love hockey, but in the grand scheme of things, Asians prefer other sports, such as soccer/basketball (China), cricket (India), etc.

Ask yourself this. How many of your asians parents play hockey?
How many of your asian parents came from HK or some part of asia struggling when they were young, and coming to Canada just to have a better life.

You think they had hockey or pro sports on their mind?
You think they would raise their kids to think about competitive sports?
Not likely.

Give 2 or 3 more generations. When a bunch of us in our 20s that were born and raise
here, been playing hockey since we were kids, eating better and healthier in Canada, etc.

Our asian grandchildren will probably have a better shot playing competitively, and if it's
genetics, it's gonna get mixed in with the whites and blacks that eat the same food
and live in the same environment over time.

Sure, many of us here may love hockey, but in the grand scheme of things, Asians prefer other sports, such as soccer/basketball (China), cricket (India), etc.

Asians, as in asians born and raised in Asia, where hockey isn't a big thing there. Asians not born here (like parents) will not support the game of hockey, and probably know little about it. Since it's not something they grew up with.

My dad wasn't big in hockey. He watches ping pong and badminton. Me being born here, had no interest in ping pong and badminton, and I had to find hockey on my own at a later age.

I guarantee when I have kids, born in Canada of course, I'm gonna introduce them to hockey a bit earlier,
cause I actually will be playing it myself, and if they want to play, I'll encourage it.

Most asian people I know of today in their 20s like me, either A) Parents immigrated here, or B) They immigrated here themselves. Not many I know of had parents actually born in Canada.

It's basically like this, over generations, asian kids are gonna get more and more whitewashed. It's inevitable, regardless how much tradition the parents try to maintain. Eventually, the asian's are gonna start playing sports like white people, and then having opportunity to play sports with white (and black) people at a competitive level.

This hits the nail on the head. Most of the chinese people who immigrated to Canada in the 70's and early 80's were too poor to let their kids play hockey if they came to Toronto or Vancouver. Anyone that went to the prairies, well it isn't in their culture nor could they afford to build that back yard rink.
Looking at it today, most of the kids are parents now and their kids are playing hockey. Give it another 5-10 years and you will see a lot more 100% asian decent players playing higher caliber hockey.
Just go to some of the local beer leagues and see how many "skilled" asian players there are, then factor in when they had/will have kids.

In the sunday night league that I play in, there are 2 asian guys that are really good. One guy has really good hands, and the other is blazing fast. Only down side is that both guys probably don't have the height it would take to make the NHL.

Damn you and all your edits.

Ice hockey is starting to take off in Asia. You have the Asia Hockey League.
http://www.alhockey.com/
The China sharks, now known as China Dragons is affiliated with the San Jose Sharks, and was where Claude Lemieux played 2 games as part of his attempt to get back into the NHL.

Only downside to hockey in asia is the racism. Had a chinese friend play hockey in one of the beer leagues in Japan and there is rampant racism against non-japanese players. Bull calls against the white and chinese players. Once they get past that and accept the and learn from the skilled players, their level will improve. Add in money to hire coaches from North America, their competitiveness will increase.

Same thing goes with women's hockey.

Look at tennis in China. In the last few years, they have changed their views and rules in regards to money won playing tennis and now they hire coaches from North America and they are begining to be more competitive.

Good point about giving it a few more generations. In time there will definitely be more Asians playing at the higher levels and perhaps a few more in the NHL.

If I can afford it, I'm gonna stick my kid in hockey too. He's 2 right now and I've given him a towel and taught him to swing it around when someone scores. Only problem is that he cheers only when the home team scores (so it could be the opposition), LOL.

Of course, he already has a mini-hockey stick and a plastic donut (as in, a Tim Hortons donut) to serve as a puck.
