Samurai Sushi @ Cambie St.

Just wondering if anyone's been to the Samurai Sushi that's near Oakridge Mall.
I'm hearing/reading mixed reviews from it. Some saying the sushi's not bad, has very large servings, and extremely cheap. But others say the sushi is terrible and/or unsafe, likely due to being under Vietnamese management (?).
I, on the other hand, just want something cheap. Plus Samurai is extremely nearby my place. And as much as I heavily appreciate good-quality sushi, I wouldn't mind this being not top quality as long as it's easily accessible, good-priced and edible.
However, I do care about it being safe to eat though.
Any takes?

It's probably safe although I wouldn't doubt they have unsafe refridgeration units for the fish.
I just wouldn't eat it because it's GARBAGE. Eat some real fucking food.

It isn't the best sushi around town. But I've eaten there, and the Fraser one, plenty of times and its cheap and I have never gotten sick from it.

Samurai Sushi is a god damn horror story. Why anyone likes that place is beyond me, but I'm really open to listening.
From the moment you walk in, you notice a sickly smell of rotten sushi permeating the air. Smells like sweat mixed with Nigiri Sushi. Eating in is not a comfortable experience with the Vietnamese ladies taking your order like they've done the same job for 40 years. If you do sit at the bar then you see the insane amount of pre-made rolls just chilling on the table.
It's even worse when you order take out. If you do decide to order takeout, make sure its something you pick up right away.
The pre-made rolls that sit there with no refrigeration is what gets me. (Even the rolls that have uncooked elements to it, like the Alaska Roll)
If you like massive portions of low-grade salmon sashimi, then by all means, go for it. Their California Roll isn't bad, very large with lots of flavor. I had their chopped scallop roll, fishly as hell...food poisoning much?
Bottom line, if you want really low quality, large portioned sushi with reasonable prices that has a chance that it might get you sick, then go for it. If you want to feed some people you don't care about, then order a party tray and be done with it. Otherwise, there are many other sushi joints in town that are of much higher quality. People that like this place haven't tried other sushi.

^ yeah, but it's not THAT bad. Cheap okay-quality food. Get take out and eat it somewhere else.

Just try it yourself. If you like it, keep going. If you don't, stop. Simple as that.

Ayt thanks for the insight guys.
Will definitely try it out at least once when I'm starvin' like marvin', but with somewhat low expectations. Haha and I guess I'll get it for take out as well then.
Cheers.

When you're a poor starving student, it seems mighty delicious. Good bang for buck!

Actually, due to their high turnover rate, the sashimi is quite fresh. The thick cut kills it, as does their use of Atlantic Salmon.

Word. Sometimes too 'fresh'. Nothing like biting into a frozen piece of Tuna.

Why don't you try Sushi Garden or Sushi King instead.
They also offer larger portions and their food is decent for the price..

Negative. Sushi Garden's portions are slightly smaller (but much higher quality). Sushi King is much cleaner and portions are also huge, but their rice is terrible. Very packed to together.

I definitely prefer the 'looseness' of Sushi Garden's rice.

tried it. it was ok, but i won't go back. didn't like the pre-made rolls hanging out, and they had A LOT of pre-ordered orders, with a few made 15 minutes early judging by the time on the receipts.
like stated there are some better "cheap sushi" options. my vote's for sushi garden lougheed, but it's always too busy to eat in, hence me always ordering out.

i eat there occasionally
dont think i've ever gotten sick
turnover is really high so if you go during meal time it's pretty fresh

I think sushi king is by far better than samurai. Their quality of seafood just taste fresher. I hate how samurai always gives you frozen tuna that you have to wait 20-25 minutes for it to thaw out before consuming.
I am not a huge fan of sushi garden... i rather have sushitown on the other side of burnaby !

Yea, Toyo Sushi is pretty good. The fact that they survived the Cambie Canada Line construction says a lot. Really fresh sashimi!

Samurai sushi has the largest sushi I've ever tried LOL. If your #1 priority is cheap and filling this is the place. For the same price I'd go to sushi garden though, their portions are smaller but tastes much better. I like the new location a lot more than the burnaby one, even though its near my house.

I say go find out for yourself. If it's unsafe to eat, they'd be closed down already.
Seems like this place hits most of the points you listed.
Opinions matter but the only opinion you should think about is your own.
You won't know until you find out.

That 1st picture with the slab of atlantic salmon sushi is just attrocious. How the hell are you going to shove that in your mouth? I understand that its fast food but that is absurd.

LOL! everyone is bashing Samurai. Trust me when your a high school student with no car, Samurai or Banzai (Richmond Location) tastes pretty good. But of course my other options are like either mcdonalds or #9.

That's fine. We all ate crap when we were 16 because we had limited options. However, by the time you graduate high school, you should know better.
And saying that good sushi costs a fortune...that's a myth. You can get a decent bento box or sushi lunch for about $10-15 bucks. Sure, it won't be as filling as a Samurai house roll that's the size of your forearm but you'll be eating food that doesn't taste like crab-flavored cardboard.

go to Zipang on Main )Vancouver)
good sushi but its not cheap like samurai
you can always go to Matsuyama on Alexandra (Richmond)
after 9pm its their "late night" menu which is fairly cheap tho not as much as it was before
