I don't think it's illegal to kill a woodpecker (they're not endangered), but even an air BB gun is considered a firearm under the law, and firing one in the city IS illegal.

When one of my dad's friends lived in the apartment next to wendy's on cambie and 8th or 7th, he used to shoot and kill the gulls and they would fall into the wendys parking lot. After a few of them, wendy called the cops on him and the cops took away his pellet gun and told him it is okay to shoot the gulls if they are a pest, you just have to clean it up. So he went and bought another one and this time he just shoots them on his patio and then cleans it up. No problems after that

Anything over 500 fps (feet/sec) requires a firearm license to own.
And I believe bb guns aren't to be used for hunting because they are generally not strong
enough to painlessly kill an animal. (instant death)

Unless you have a firearm license with a 1000 fps + bb gun rifle...
