Check with the Canadian Kennel Club for a list of recognized breeders in the area.

Here's their article on "Finding a Reputable Breeder": http://www.ckc.ca/en/Default.aspx?tabid=113

Oh, and while you're waiting to find just the right dog... tune in the National Geographic channel and watch lots of The Dog Whisperer.

New at this too

So it says to always visit the kennel. What if someone is looking for a breed that isn't very common and there are very few breeders. (Say the only breeder was in Saskatchewan or something) would you actually have to go there to pick the dog up? what if you can't get there due to inconvience (work/school/other issues) can it be like sent to you somehow?

Yes, most breeders will ship, but I would only go that route if you've had recommendations of the breeder from other people with lots of positive feedback, i.e. previous buyers. Best case scenario is to visit the breeder's home, of course.

Check out Kijiji. If they look shady and dont provide documents, don't buy it from them.

Well first off i'd like to say best of luck on your search the more research you do the better. I found a breader off of Kijiji for my Great Dane that I got from Tacoma a 8 month's ago myself. I asked the breeder lots of quesition's on there health guarentee and for information on there lines of the Bitch and Sire. If the breeder is one bit hesitant to answer any question's that you have i'd walk away. We visited the breeders house also and met both the parents of the little at the time

If they are claiming the dog is "Pure Bred" ask them to see the papers for both parents if they dont' have the papers then its not technically consider pure bred. Just because they came from two beagles doesn't mean its pure bread lol

They are not all breeders, some people there are agents (people who buy dogs from puppy mills / backyard breeder).

Risks associated with buying a dog off buysell are health issues, genetic issues etc etc

Have you though about adopting a dog?

SARA society has dogs. Similar to the SPCA.

http://www.sarasociety.com/

edit: Should mention, though, that SARA deals mainly with cats, although they do have a few dogs. Doesn't hurt to look around.

There are lots of rescue outfits in town - dogs rescued from puppy mills, negligent owners, abandoned, etc. They mostly have older dogs, and some have been mistreated, so you really have to be able to channel Cesar, but at the same time, rescue dogs often turn out to be the MOST loving once they're treated well.

Hey, you want an 8-month-old Pom x Yorkie cross? Daisy still needs a good home! (See the "Introduce your pet" thread...)

There are lots of breed rescues associated with local clubs as well. If you are looking for a beagle but think you would like to adopt then get in touch with the Beagle Club of Canada or BC and the members should be able to point you in the right direction. They may even have information about their rescue on their site.

wow, this is a sweet site... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw.. i clicked into the adoption section and see there are many dogs that i like

but why is their descrition all the same ?

"we believe the pups are Australian Kelpie mixes. father unknown, mother was killed by a car when pups were 5 wks old. they are 11 wks. now. Email the sarasociety@gmail.com to view them. adopters must be local home owners with fenced yard. no long distance requests with be considered. "

are these legit ?
