: CN Railway Hiring

I just thought that I would share.

https://prod.fadvhms.com/cnr/jobboard/JobDetails.aspx?__ID=*56FB4F1F9E74DDED

So far, CN has hired 30 people for Vancouver, and now are looking for another 25.

For those interested, you will be applying as a conductor. Basically, in charge of the train, but not moving it. Hours are weird, but the pay is damn good. Training wage is $20 an hour (800 a week) and after 6 months, you will be making, at minimum, $220 a day in the yard.

Hope to see those of you who are interested in a few months in the yard.

EDIT: Now looking for more. New job posting was up as of October 12!

how many hrs do you work a single day?

TekDragon
04-30-2010, 11:03 AM
8 hours. We don't have the quit system anymore like we used to. They can ask you to work over time (3 hours) or pull a double shift (16 total, two 8 hour shifts), but that won't be until you're qualified and done all training.

do you need to take the train course @ bcit before you can apply for this job?

Basically, the engineer drives the locomotive. The train (locomotive and rail cars) is your responsibility. You handle the paperwork, the inspections, etc of the train to ensure it's safe operation.

It is also unlikely that a new hire would be on the road for most of their shifts. Expect to be in the yard putting together or pulling apart trains.

It is ENTIRELY outdoors. I suppose I should be a bit more descriptive as well. The railway runs 24/7. Employees will work around the clock to ensure things run they way they should. There is a good possibility of working evenings/nights, and almost guaranteed that you will work weekends and holidays.

Baring that though, it's a hell of a job and I don't think that I could be happier anywhere else.

do you need to take the train course @ bcit before you can apply for this job?

I did, but there were several in my hiring group who did not.

It's full time. CN does not hire transportation trades as part time.

At first, it will be on call on the spare board, but there is a board guarantee. There is, however, 4-6 months of training to go through first.

I can't see myself in a 9-5 office job.

I'm guessing the first interview will be a group interview?

Yes and no. When I went, they held an info session for those who they picked out of the pool of candidates they had. After said info session, we were taken individually for interviews (2 interviewers to one potential hire). After that, I never received another interview, but many people in my class did.

Grade 12 is all they really ask. That being said, a bit of common sense, an eye for detail, and a good sense of safety tend to help.

Farthest from city of Van is Surrey. The "up to six days away from home" is not realistic. Doubtful that you will get that, but it can happen from time to time. That is really only for road shifts and not the yard.

Any idea when they will start calling?

Also the application process was pretty long. When I got to the final part and I clicked next, there was no "thank you for applying" or "your application has been completed" type message. Just a blank page. Is that normal? Also I recieved an email however saying my application has been received. Just worried they only have my email address and not the results of that long process.

It's normal. I had the same. Just keep track on the CN website for status updates. From what I understand, my class, as well as the one after, will go through training. 3-5 months hopefully, then they will take in the next intake as to not overflow the system.

Do you have to be built? i'm not a huge guy by any means, but i got good work ethic and this looks very appealing.

We have all sizes of people in our class. Big, small, male and female. Being strong helps, but by no means is it a requirement.

As far as I know, the only way to apply is through a CN career fair (there hasn't been one in a few years) or online. They don't take resumes or applications any other way.

TekDragon
05-09-2010, 06:54 AM
My class was a special exception for hiring time. 9 months. Kept on getting email updates from HR as to us still being potential candidates. The long wait time in our case was due to both the CN Engineers strike and the olympics. I am not HR, and I cannot give a timeline. If I were to guess though, I would peg it around the 4 or 5 month mark that they would start having people in for training.

Still, I've thought long and hard about applying anyways to see if I could get in without it.

Something to think about the next time it's pissing with rain, and freezing outside... you'd be working in it! A lot of people think they can deal with it, but it's not easy. There is a reason the pay is good!

How do you like the jump from Conductor to Engineer? (besides the pay increase :p) Since it requires you to be away from home a bit more?

Anything else you'd be willing to share would be cool. You're the first Engineer I've been able to talk to.

I've been debating back and forth about applying to be a Conductor (with the intent to become an Engineer at some point) but the weird hours, and not really knowing when you'll be working next is a bit of a worry (espically with a stupid mortgage :( )

Don't want to get your hopes up, but they spend money for you to have your medical. They typically won't send you if they don't want you as a potential candidate. Not saying you're a shoe in, but you've made it this far. :)

The work is good, the guys you work with are usually great. The usual politics and bs, but that's relatively minor compared to the rest of it. Training wage is decent, and the pay is quite good once you get out there. Like the work so far. The big thing I'm having a hard time getting used to is the 24/7 on call part. You get rest between, and you can book days off, but it's definitely a lifestyle change.

so when you say in charge of a train but not moving it....what position would that be? i wanna be the dude in the front car controlling the train hahaha, what position would that be called?

Conductors switch rail cars, make or split up trains in yards, move cars between yards, sidings or tracks (often using a remote control device called a belt pack), according to instructions originating with yard and train planners. This requires good communication skills involving specific hand signals or radio to facilitate the safe movement of engines and cars. They work on-call with irregular hours, weekends and holidays.

Locomotive Engineers operate diesel-electric locomotives, rail diesel cars, interpret train orders, timetables, train signals, and railway rules and regulations to transport freight in a safe and efficient manner. Locomotive Engineers are promoted from position of Conductor.

How are the raises like? How many years would it take to get there?

No raises. It's all set rates. All you get are whats worked out as raises based on the collective agreement.

They actually had an orientation session today. I received an invite but after some thought decided not to go (for now).

From what I know there's another training session in late december after the one on the 6th and another orientation session in January for those that are interested.

Just a couple of questions about the orientation/training session.

When and where is the orientation session/ training session? How do you get invited and do u have to be invited to attend those sessions?

How come u decided not to go?

d1
11-10-2010, 02:54 PM
They didn't tell me exactly when the next orientation is, just that it'd be in January. The location for the one yesterday was Compass Point Inn in Surrey. Apply on their website and you should get an invite.

I'm still still in school right now and this is completely unrelated to what I'm doing so I decided to hold off for now. Another major downer is the 24/7 on call - you never really know when you're going to work so your schedule's gonna be all over the place.

It gets you fit, but you need to be able to walk. A lot. Some upper body strength. Nothing too extreme. You get fit by nature of the job while doing your training.
So, how is your job like? Are you constantly on the yard doing the same repetitive task for 8 hrs per day? or you do a bit of everything, paperwork, etc.

paperwork is near zero. In the yard typically for 8+ hours a day. I can't tell you that I've had the same day twice since I've started. End up doing a beltpack shift one day, full crew the next, transfer from Lynn Creek to Thorton yard the day after. You get the idea. Lots of different things, lots of industries to learn.

To put it simply, we move box cars.

I've yet to be yelled at by my employer. I've yet to be insulted, threatened, back stabbed, or other actions of the sort. I go to work and put in my 8 hours or so, and go home. Occasionally, I get a thank you, or good work. It's not a bad line of work. Where else can you make $30 an hour with just a high school education?

No doubt the pay is great, and all those reviews could be wrong about working for CN .... maybe the management team is better in vancouver vs our other canadian or american counterparts! you never know I guess.

When you work, it's minimum $30 an hour. More or less depending on differentials.

whats a typical day on the job as a conductor like?

I can only speak for yard work, not road.

Show up 10 minutes before shift, get safety gear on (hi viz vest, safety glasses, boots, etc). Get radio and switch lists (list showing cars in a track and where they are to be sorted in the yard). Determine how to switch them, job brief with crew, and then execute. Once finished, talk to yardmaster for more work.

Usually involves taking inbound traffic (trains that come into the yard) and breaking it apart as per the yardmaster. Also build trains to go outbound. I hope that sheds a bit of light on it. I'm trying to not use railway terms and it's difficult.

Most people usually get two interviews. Few exceptions are as follows: You get interviewed by Ed, and the other lady there. That counts as your two interviews. Or, you just impress them enough and you only get the one.

Yeah it is 2 weeks now to start date and no call, so I don't think I'm getting an offer. Oh well, not sure what could be wrong with my history, no work gaps aside from going to college, no criminal, no medical problems. Must be more qualified people that were in the pool I'm guessing. Hopefully I can find work soon :D.

That gives me hope, but I'm just going to assume I didn't get it since I was told I would be given a 2 week notice by the recruiter. I've already turned down a couple jobs in the past month cause I wasn't sure of this CN thing. I wish they would of gave a more direct answer instead of beating around the bush.

I still have one app in for review from 4 months ago, but the one that I got an interview for got reviewed in one night and was offered an orientation the next day.
