| Ontario Provincial Police are douchebags.. http://www.autoblog.com/2010/05/01/c...e-mini-convoy/
Every year, the Southern Ontario Mini Club organizes two charity drives – one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Over time, the event has grown from a handful of participating cars to over 30, and as such, this year the organizers let local law enforcement know where the caravan would be and when it would be there as a courtesy. So far, so good, right? Not exactly.
During the first part of the drive, the convoy ran into a few members of the Ontario Provincial Police without incident. One officer even went so far as to tell the organizers that there was only one other patrol for the rest of the route. Turns out that wasn't quite true.
Instead of providing an escort for the convoy or thanking the organizers for a heads up, the OPP set up a speed trap along the route where the limit changes from 100 km/h to 90 km/h. When the parade of Minis came past, officers pulled over the whole lot, and cited three cars for going 121-123 kmh in a 90 kmh zone, or about 76 in a 55. One driver was also cited for having a radar detector and had his equipment confiscated.
Yes, setting up a speed trap on a charity drive is a prick move, but it gets worse. The OPP evidently called the local television station beforehand so they could film the whole sting. Once the station had the film, they broadcast a story claiming that 11 of the Mini drivers had been arrested for doing 50 kmh over the speed limit and that they had their vehicles confiscated as a result. Even worse, the story claimed that some of the Mini drivers had their children with them and that the OPP had called the Canadian equivalent of child services on the parents.
Members of the Mini club complained to the station, and the video was taken down as a result, though no apology or retraction has been issued so far.

Hrmm. Pack of cars driving 20-30k over the speed limit. Stupid police for pulling them over, right? Sorry, that's not a prick move, that's good enforcement of the law. Driving for charity doesn't excuse you from the rules of the road. If anything the organizers of the rally should have taken more care to keep the drive within the speed limit.
Also, the OPP doesn't call the Ministry of Child Services every time somebody speeds a little. That's just silly, and it was obviously made up (either by the TV station, or by one of the disgruntled drivers feeding info to the station to make a more fantastical story). Honestly the only problem I see here is that a TV station seems to have made up a bunch of stories to boost their ratings or something.

I can't tell from the picture whether the convoy was travelling on a 400-series highway or not. Having spent some time in Ontario, however, I would say the OPP has pulled an *EXTREMELY* bastarded move on the Mini owners. On all the 400-series highways, the posted limit is 100kph, but the de facto limit is 120kph because EVERYBODY (including the ... See Morepolice themselves) drive at that speed. And even then, you regularly get passed by people doing 130kph to 140kph.
Normally, nobody bothers anyone doing 120kph on the 400-series highways. Go faster than that, and you get nailed. Every driver on the road understood that.
So for the OPP to set up a speed trap at the 100kph to 90kph section is an extremely cheap trick. And to call up the tv crew to film it all, that only makes it worse.
Do you see why people colloquially call police officers "pigs"?

it doesn't look like its highway 400-1/10 cause its only 2 lane, plus why would they do 76 on a 55. breaking the law regardless its for charity is still breaking the law.
besides that, pretty shitty that officer lied to them and had a camera crew..
other than that, its all fair.

Pulling them over for speeding, thats fine whatever they trapped them. But all that other shit they got them for = not cool, media included.

Speeding is speeding but they pretty much did set them up. By telling them that the route was clear was pretty much saying "Speed within reason since you wont get caught"..
I wonder if anyone was running trapster on their phone. If that road is busy enough there is a possibility that someone would have marked that spot as a speed trap.

Wow, that must suck for a police to "bend the truth" on ya. Law is law, but the media exaggerated too much.

You can say they are breaking the law, but NO ONE ever cruises at the speed limit on hwy...including the police. 20-30km/h above the limit is usually the traffic speed on hwy.
On the other hand, it is very common for police to setup speed trap in city area with 50/60km speed limit.
