Laptop Gurus,

I come to you once again and am looking for some advice! I have been looking at the Asus UL30VT-A1 and it looks like a pretty bang on laptop (minus some trackpad issues), any other suggestions in the league?

Looking to spend 700-900 for the laptop. Going to need it be a PC since I won't be able to use a Mac for my needs. It will be used primarily for school and when it isn't, it will be used to stream shows/movies at home. I like the asus because it offers the best of both worlds. Anything else, would be great too. Not needing a laptop that can game. Only ones that will be good for video/movies.

http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=49925&vpn=UL30VT%2DA1&manufacture=ASUS

If you can please let me know what you think of this laptop or have other recommendations, please let me know!

Thanks!!!

toshiba is alrit, they have major overheating issue.

Friend has one and the freaking laptop can get REAL HOT. the processor location gets so hot that you actually feel like its burning by resting ur palm on top.

now if u remove the laptop off the table, the same spot can be felt as if you took a hair dryer and blow at the desk for 10 minutes. thats how freaking hot it is..

sony seems alrit

i had good experience with sony and acers laps

I had the same question and read a ton of reviews before deciding. I received my Dell 1558 on Fri and am impressed. It was $980 before taxes.

The absolute best thing: 1080p 15.6" monitor. 1920x1080!

I have a 2yo 1440x900 14.1" work laptop, and a 3yo 1280x800 12.1" previous home laptop. I was really disappointed to see most of the new laptops are 720p, 1368x720. It seems like a step backwards for laptops.

720 vertical resolution sucks, 800 was barely tolerable on the 12.1" and 900 on the 14.1" was nearly ideal. I tried a few out in the store first and hated the 720 vertical resolution. Even with font sizes adjusted smaller, I just couldn't get enough screen real estate.

The 1080p monitor upgrade was only $50 on the Dell Studio 150, and you could easily option it out below $900. I got the i5, 4GB of ram, and the backlit keyboard. Backlit keyboard is awesome! Oh and the touchpad supports gestures, aka pinch zoom.

I really like the HP Probook 4320S that we just got in at Staples and it's similar in size and weight to that Asus, but cheaper and with a much faster CPU.

On sale for $799 until closing tomorrow night (the stores should have these in stock even though the website says it's out of stock; we have 3 at my store).

Good processor, 63 Whr battery (a typical 6-cell is 47 Whr, so it lasts about 33% longer), aluminum chassis, Windows 7 Professional (32-bit and 64-bit) + Windows XP Professional 32-bit so you can dual boot or use Windows XP mode within Windows 7, comes with a really nice software package including Corel Office, HP Protect Tools (facial recognition, fingerprint reader, file encryption, lo-jack theft recovery, etc.).

It's almost like you didn't read my post.

I expect newer laptops to have more resolution than older laptops. My 14" work laptop is < 2yo and has 1440x900, and my 12" laptop has more vertical resolution.

OP wants a school laptop, which implies he'll be reading/writing, and more vertical resolution is best.
Plus he wants it to watch movies, and movies in 1080p look absolutely amazing on this screen.

mine is like 3 years old at this point and the hardware outperforms brand new laptops with Vista installed, it has never once failed on me, the screen remains brighter than all my friends notebooks at 3 years old, and the computer itself remains stylish and up to date in terms of looks even though it's 3 years old

i really couldnt be happier with it, and like i said i wouldnt buy another notebook other than a sony, in my lifetime i've probably owned 13-15 desktop PC's and 3 notebooks and this sony Vaio ranks amongst the best out of all of them

thing is, i bought a higher end one at the time, the sticker price at bestbuy was 1499, and i bought the last floor model available for 999, so it was fairly high end to begin with

I agree. Based on my laptop experience I will never buy another HP.

HP and NVidia both screwed up, yet neither were willing to admit it and recall the laptops even though it affected virtually the entire lineup of HPs at the time (DVs and TXs). If you were out of warranty, you were screwed.

The NVIdia chip would run hot, HP didn't design adequate cooling, and HP switched to "environmentally friendly" solder which has a lower melting point. Plus hibernate/sleep would keep the video chip powered and always hot. All combined it would cause the solder on the video chip would fail after 12-24 months of use. There are a number of fixes online, yet I tried them and none worked long term. Eventually I packed it in and bought my new Dell.

Dell does have a reputation lately of poor quality too, yet their customer service is always top notch.

This is what pains me the most.

I hate ordering something before I test it out. It just seems like such a HUGE hassle for something that might turn out to be a bust.

And I am not going to get alienware plus I hate small monitors. :lol

That would totally defeat the purpose of me getting this work laptop. I have a friend who has the M11X and it is SWEET. I just can't get over the 11inch monitors. 13.3 is IDEAL.

I won't need it till probably late June if even that. I know that the release dates are all messed up cause apparently Intel is holding out on processors till summer so I don't know what is up with that.

But I really want to know if there's any stores that carry the ULs in stock so I can take a look at them in person before ordering.

NCIX Richmond has the 15in UL on display but doesn't really look like the 13.3. It sort of does but there are some evident differences.

I am waiting on the release of UL30JT before I make a decision on UL30VT vs. Timeline

http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54920&vpn=9S7%2D16G122%2D003&manufacture=MSI%2FMicroStar

I've been looking for something that can play sc smoothly on medium type settings. Looking at the ASUS U30JC too.

ASUS U30JC can play Crysis at low levels so it should be able to handle SC no problems. I also get 5 plus hours surfing the web or watching movies.

The latest Acer products I have owned were monitors and the Aspire One netbook. Both have been great. One of the monitors is about 3 years old and is still going strong, meanwhile the other which is a year old is also fine. I don't have the netbook anymore, but it was solid.

AS3820TG-3022 Laptop is on sale for 649.99

Did you end up getting the 3820TG?

I got mine a few weeks ago, upgraded from Alienware M11x.

Went for the 3820TG from MemoryExpress though, i3-370m but with the ATI5650 instead of the 5470 (big difference between the graphics cards even though less CPU power)

Was $739.99 + taxes and discounts to $788.xx total.

This for 649.99 is a STEAL, anyone looking for a great laptop, portability, but with gaming edge as well should consider this.

Hey, you have my word too, it's a great laptop.

Check out notebookreview.com 3820TG thread while you're waiting for it to be shipped , plenty of great information.

Thanks!

I've read all the reviews beforehand. It isn't in the truest form an impulse buy... It's an impulse by as in it took me from not planning to buying a laptop to getting one in less than 5 mins.

I did tonnes of reviews and research before ultimately committing to this laptop. The deciding process from not wanting one to getting one was the impulse.

Either way, if you can find a coupon online for staples, it makes this an even more kick ass deal.

Can anyone suggest a fairly decent laptop/netbook that could replace a desktop, run basic games (ie CS1.6), and could be used in school? I know the options are slim at my budget, but I'm looking to spend no more than $450. There's a member on RS selling one that I like, but I'm a bit wary of used laptops.

Thanks!

Just went through NCIX/ME website, sorted notebooks by price, only had 2 "options" for notebooks under $450.

That price range will only get you a <13.3" NETbook, won't be capable of much more than basic websurfing/documents/ 720p movies if you're lucky

Either you:
1) up your budget, make the laptop that'll do the job properly

or 2) get a cheaper 10.1" netbook for school, use the rest of the money to upgrade your desktop to play CS1.6 or whatever.

Thing is, my current desktop would be a complete joke to upgrade as it's outdated by a longshot. I'm leaning towards netbook, but I've had past experiences with my cousin's netbook freezing up with only a few tabs open. Then again, he did get it for free with his internet package.

What would be a good netbook that can hold it's own as a desktop-style surfer? ie. can have MSN, word, and Chrome open with maybe 3 tabs open max, doesn't lock up when flash applications open. Being able to run HD movies isn't a big sell for me, as long as YouTube doesn't freeze every 3 seconds.

If that's the case, almost any netbook will do, if that's the case, just buy it pre owned off RS from a trusted member etc.

If you're into gaming, like even the slightest hint of it, i'd suggest just getting a laptop that can actually game, I'm speaking from personal experience here haha.

Currently a student, needed something light for school was the mindset.
Bought a gateway ec1803h off a RS member, was great, lightweight portable at 11.6", hdmi out, did all the basics.

Then had the itching for gaming since this ec1803h/netbook was too basic. Sold it, upgraded to m11x which was a solid gaming netbook with 11" portability.

Did all the basics of course, did the gaming fine (sc2 on medium etc), strained on the eyes though because of the small screen.

Upgraded to the acer 3820tg 13.3". Best compromise, lightweight 3.9lbs, beautiful screen, HDMI output, 500gb HD for media, 4GB ram, ATI 1GB dedicated 5650 GFX card. Not much more than your budget of $450, definitely worth the "investment". Don't go through all the hassle and learning-from-mistakes like I did haha.

Long read? Sorry, this laptop is just that good haha.

edit: forgot about the aesthetics, looks very professional, slim, minimal, and the lid is just absolutely amazing in terms of the "texture" they put on it. It's not just simple black gloss or boring silver.

"brushed metal" is what they call it.

Thanks for all that, I'll probably pick up some kind of Samsung netbook from FS/BB or something along those lines (250GB HD, integrated webcam, processor close to 2GHz, possible expandable RAM).

Reason I say my desktop is a POS is that even though I stole 256MB of RAM from my old computer to put into this one, it's still too outdated to justify getting a new GFX card for it (especially considering I'd only use it to play CS 1.6). I know it's a longshot in this thread, but if anyone's got a spare GFX card that can support CS, let me know if you're gonna let it go for cheap haha.

Yeah cheapest I've seen is $27 -30 shipped to your door, install is easy though.

If you're good with soldering, you can even get the 3810T one for about the same price and do the backlit mod, I'd love to do it but I don't have the confidence to tinker with my new laptop haha.

I grabbed this one when it was 21.99 :) pretty good, doesn't shake like crazy and it's not too loud. One negative about it is that it runs better when plugged into both your left hand usb slots, when it is just one of them plugged in, the shaking is a bit more noticeable.

Don't really need the hotkeys, use them a lot less than the SHIFT key and the ENTER key lol. Plus, it's only the F2 hotkey that differs. For a $30 difference, I'm sure I can live with remembering F2 is not actually bluetooth but enabling/disabling wifi amirite?

So..

What does the current keyboard look like and why is it a pain?

Like most keyboards I've bought/encountered from the North America market, they're set up with BILINGUAL so they layout is a little different from the "conventional" US layout

Biggest difference for me is the left shift and the enter key.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/typo3temp/pics/82b645aa24.jpg

I can live with it, but i'd probably change it soon just purely out of convenience.

It's like when they were designing the keyboard, they started from the right side and worked their way to the left side, then realized there wasn't enough space and crammed those keys onto the left end of the keyboard...

Biggest difference for me is the left shift and the enter key.
I had the same issue on my previous 12" laptop, the left shift key was not double wide and there was no dedicated delete key. What I did was map the key to the right of the left shift key to also be left shift, then remapped its current function to be a key combination (ie hold FN then press).

Remapping keys is pretty easy, I think it was just a registry entry.

illicitstylz

^ great idea with the key remapping I'll post a tutorial if I get it figured out

$30?

To US is free shipping hence $29.99

To Canada is 22.00 on top

Update:

Figured out how to save all of us $30 by remapping the keys instead of buying a new keyboard.

1) Download SharpKeys
http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys3.msi

2) Install

3) Run, below the LEFT column, click on "Type Key", push the " : \ " key that you want to remap (to the right of the left shift key)

4) below the RIGHT column, click on "Type Key", push the "left shift" key that you wanted originally

5) Apply/Ok all the menus

6) Reboot

Don't really need the hotkeys, use them a lot less than the SHIFT key and the ENTER key lol. Plus, it's only the F2 hotkey that differs. For a $30 difference, I'm sure I can live with remembering F2 is not actually bluetooth but enabling/disabling wifi amirite?

Well, if I'm going to get a replacement keyboard, I might as well make sure it's the right one since I'm coughing up the dough.

I messaged the seller and he said he would be willing to do $40 shipped. I think I'm going to bite :D

For an extra $10, you get a properly mapped keyboard.

F2 has a command on it
F7 which turns off the touchpad is missing
F8? same fucntion but different icon?

Are you shipping to Canada or the states?

FYI: top one looks like a 3810 keyboard which has glossy keys. The 3820 keyboard has matte keys. This might factor into your decision making. The glossy keys smudge more easily, of course.

SSD is like twice the price, and I figured that only 64GB would be enough unless you use it as a media center too.

the momentus xt has a lot of bad reviews from newegg.com, it's like a 50/50, very mixed reviews

Well, if you're going to make an upgrade, you might as well make one that's worthwhile. The minor difference for that $60 you're paying just isn't worth it unless you have a lot of cash to burn.

IIRC, the negative feedback for some of the Momentus XTs were due to mechanical failure because of a few bad batches. In any case, the added cache on the hard drive will make a noticeable difference, albeit not as dramatic as a SSD.

I'm personally still waiting for SSD prices to drop down further before I snag a 128GB one. The last 64GB sped up my UL20A a lot, but the lack of space and having to carry an external HD around was a PITA.

Stepped my budget up a bit, now I have around $400-ish taxed in. I've been looking at the FS/BB sites and found a couple of laptops that seem to fit my needs (decided to screw the netbook for something I can actually use for general purpose).

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/acer-acer-aspire-15-6-laptop-featuring-amd-v140-processor-as5252-v305-black-as5252-v305/10155099.aspx?path=6746017e7039441d1b1e6a0d45a5bbb ben02
I personally like this one, but I'm not sure how well the AMD V140 processor performs, since I like to multi-tab my browsing.

This one is the same price as above after the discount, seems solid with the dual-core and is more compact, but I'm a bit wary of the integrated graphics since I still want to be able to run CS 1.6.

Any opinions are appreciated thanks! I'm a bit stoked to be getting a laptop, and I want to make it count.

Found out that Dell Canada is having a Black Friday sympathy sale, and got a Dell Inspiron 15 for 500 taxed in. Anyone have any experiences with Dell?

Had ordered a Dell Alienware M11x a 3 months ago. Retail 1100, had a coupon for 25% off at the outlet for a certified refurbished one.

Received it, item was absolutely mint condition, performed fully.

Did some research, turns out they forgot to send me a alienware tactx keyboard, worth $109.99 + tax, called in, talked to 2 reps and a supervisor, acknowledged their mistake and they sent it on next day shipping to me.

Afterwards, realized that they sent me the wrong ac adapter, it was a generic one whereas I was supposed to get a ultraportable mini one (which the acer 3820TG doesn't have :rolleyes:but then again it was an 11" gaming netbook compared to a 13.3"). Anyways, one call, apologized and sent me the correct AC charger WITHOUT having to send out my current one.

In the end, got a great deal on the laptop, extra gaming keyboard, 2 ac chargers for half the price of a retail stock package, and with pretty solid customer service.

The one thing I would really like to know is how colours are rendered on the screen, as they don't have wifi, and they wouldn't let me tether my iPhone to it. What do you guys think?

Thanks, all the reviews I've looked at were quite positive, but I missed the zdnet one.

Yep, just bought a 17" Macbook Pro, but my other 17" laptop which is now 4 years old is used by the missus and is close to death, so I might get this one. As she only uses it for internet, Skyping & the very occasional photo editing, this just might be the one that fits her needs the most I've looked at so far. I'd love to get her a Macbook or Macbook Pro, but they're a little overkill for her.

Wound up picking up a Dell Inspiron from the Dell website a while back. It's a solid laptop for general purpose/light gaming, but my MAJOR gripe with this thing is that the fucking keyboard doesn't like to register fast spacebar presses. My brother's VAIO has a normal space bar, but if I type my normal speed compared to that, it doesn't register at all. Sometimes I have to hammer on it to register properly.

Any options for an inexpensive keyboard replacement? Thanks.

I saw this at Walmart the other day. The machine seems to be surprisingly solid, the keyboard doesn't flex like some cheap laptops out there, it's quite thin compared to other 17 inchers & the screen resolution is 1600x900. The one thing I would really like to know is how colours are rendered on the screen, as they don't have wifi, and they wouldn't let me tether my iPhone to it. What do you guys think?

Buy it, dude !!! Best $4.48 you will ever spend ... They have to honour the price advertised !

When I bought mine, I wanted a 17" laptop that was powerful, light and thin. The MBP was the only model that fit my criteria. I had been a Windows fan since Windows 95 came out and didn't know anything about Mac OS, but I thought I'd give it a try, as all of my photographer/designer friends used Macs. Now I can't imagine going back to Windows ever - it's so clunky. Now, there are those thinner laptop models from Dell that are almost as thin, but it looks like they're not built very well.

I looked at Alienware, Falcon NorthWest & Eurocom, and while the laptops by these companies had the computing power and high gamut screens, they were all too thick and heavy.

With the MBP, you'll get the best trackpad in the industry, a great feeling keyboard, an amazing screen & if you care, a great aesthetic design. Sure, they're more expensive, but if you're a professional photographer, that difference can be made up with an extra day or two of shooting.

Show me a 17" Windows machine that is 1" thick and weighs 6 pounds. While the ASUS has impressive specs, it's way too big and heavy for photographic/video/graphic professionals to lug around from site to site.
If you're just a gamer that needs the fastest laptop because you play CoD at Waves Cafe at 3am, then the ASUS is probably perfect. You just need to get the best tool for your needs. No need to hate.

Do not get a laptop. I purchased an ASUS gaming laptop for $1800, to use with very similar programs (working in architecture). The laptop died in less than 6 months. If you want to model/ render you NEED a desktop with hyper-threading and discrete graphics.

So if you throw your laptop at the wall and sent it in they will repair it or if they can't , they will send you a new one.

Photographers might use mac's but real designers don't - especially if he needs to run 3Ds Max and other proprietary design software designed for windows.

ASUS warranty was amazing and they sent me a brand new laptop. Doesn't change the fact that laptop cooling design is absolutely awful and can't really be used for any professional rendering work.

i think you need to list out what you think is important in your criteria exactly. if you just want portability, decent power, and snappy response (i.e. SSD), grab any ultrabook or the mb air.

i suggested the lenovo b/c according to the reviewer, it has a touchscreen, IPS screen, 9 cell, he added a SSD, a spill-resistant keyboard, and overall ruggedness; features that i think would appeal to a photographer or designer in the field.

I have an i7 Quad Core desktop already for 3D modeling/rendering and would like a much more mobile laptop I can lug around when I'm on the go. At the moment, I'm basing it on the design and size/portability with a balance of a good processor and graphics card. Essentially, I'd like to do the exact workload on my desktop on this new laptop while working remote with my clients etc. I had a Dell 15" Inspiron 6400 (weighing 6lbs) Core 2 Duo before and it was slow as shit and heavy to lug around and I feel that it will be the same with the Lenovo W520 (at 6.26 lbs), too bulky and maybe overkill for my needs. Moreover, I plan to set both desktop and laptop on a mini render farm to help with the render load.

I think the Samsung 7 Series Chronos 14" (maybe 15" depending on how I feel about the size at the store) is the best competitor to the Macbook Pro. It's about the same specs but at half the cost.

OSX is Great for school and reading documents, word processing, surfing etc. I love the four-finger swipes! Even though I have a mouse, I hardly ever use it. No need to go with super high end MBP for gaming, the standard old refurbs are great as well (I think all apple certified refurbs have new bodies anyway.. just old internals).. and I don't think MBPs are really meant for gaming. They could probably run the standard SC2 or whatever, but if you really want a game rig, get a PC instead. Best to get a combo of MBP for school and a at-home desktop Windows PC for games

This is pretty much better than a MBP in some aspects. Similar specs with better cooling feature, lighter, much more durable material (anodized paint) with a better design at half the cost. I'm just annoyed how they advertised an optional SSD drive but I couldn't customize my order.

Agreed. That 4 cel will just kill the portability as you'll need to be tethered.

I was wondering if anyone has the Samsung Series 9 laptop? Just want to know if its worth buying or if I should go in a different direction. (laptop for the GF)

Also for gaming laptops, does anyone have the Samsung Series 7 Gamer? or are there better options out there. I dont really want to go the Alien wear route either. (laptop for me)

I also dont want / need a desktop.

Gaming Laptops suck. I bought the Alienware m13x. 1.4k ? Ya i paid 300 more on top for cosmetic and the brand , but hey I wanted one since I was a school kid. Might as well give it a shot.

Turns out, the m13x grew so damn laggy in a year and i just traded it for a desktop.

Fuck gaming laptops IMO. My friend has MB air , and hes loving da school life. LOL
