and this one guy just starts yelling and screaming before the times up, supposedly the guy next to him, holding a brief case, drops it in shock of the guy screaming and panic ensues

Couldn't hear the scream or the briefcase but my guess is that someone thought it was a bomb if a suitcase fell onto the ground and made a loud crack.

THE HAGUE - Dozens of people were injured in a stampede Tuesday at a Second World War commemoration in Amsterdam after which two men were arrested, media reports said.

The NOS public broadcaster showed footage of crowds scattering in panic, screaming as they fled from an unidentifiable threat on the Dam square during a two-minute moment of silence observed from 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) at the annual commemoration of the dead.

Queen Beatrix and members of her family were shown being hustled to safety as police tried to restore order and emergency staff assisted the injured.

The broadcaster reported that dozens of people were hurt, many suffering broken bones as they were pushed into barricades.

The ceremony, however, continued after a short interlude with a public announcement that: "Someone has fallen ill and is being treated".

The NOS quoted Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende as saying that someone had deliberately attempted to disrupt the ceremony, held on the eve of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands from Nazi occupation.

Amsterdam police were not available for comment.

Dutch news agency ANP reported that two men were arrested. One had started shouting during the moment of silence, whereupon the other dropped a suitcase in the crowd, it said.

Security at the event was tight, prompted by a failed attack on the royal family during annual Queen's Day celebrations last year.

Beatrix and members of her entourage watched on in horror a year ago as a man rammed his car into festival-goers, killing seven bystanders.

I live in Amsterdam and was at the Dam when this happened. There certainly was tension in the air, keeping in mind last years occurrences. It was handled very well by the A'dam police who had the man in question under arrest within a minute. Everyone was obviously shook up and although many people left, including myself, the ceremony continued on in full-force.

The news agencies are now reporting it was someone who likely just wanted to disturb the peace and that the man with the suitcase was probably not related but had just dropped it in shock.

As we watched the crowds running towards us and the thundering of footsteps across the square, our minds jumped to the worst possible scenario and we weren't about to wait around to see if it were true! Thankfully, it was not and that everyone is OK!

i remember several years ago seeing news footage of a war memorial in quebec with little canadian flags planted in the ground to represent each person lost. a sepratist pig came up and started kicking the flags over and stepping on them. unfortunately i couldn't find the clip.
