: Where do you shop for your groceries?

Just wondering where everyone shops at. Maybe we can find out cheaper places.

For my vegetables and fruits I prefer those grocery stores along commercial drive, but it's quite a drive for me so I head to superstore. I do most of my shopping at superstore but buy my meats from this Asian store in Richmond near Richmond center. And costco for a few limited things.

I try and avoid safeway lol.

Safeway for deli meats, cream, yogurt, steaks
China/Rice World for Asian stuff
Costco/Superstore for prepared/frozen food, bread
occasionally RPM for produce, and my neighbourhood grocery store for meat and produce

I usually try and support local shops around the city. Other than that, I usually get all the frozen and prepackaged foods from costco and safeway.

Depends on where the sales are.

Mostly Fairway Market because it's the closest and on my way home from work, but I don't get meat from them. They're usually the cheapest too.

Thrifty foods has some of the best quality produce of all the supermarket chains, and they try to get most of their product from local sources but they are also more expensive than others. I go there when I want to cook a special dinner.

Save-On-Foods is usally the middle of the road in terms of quality and price. They have good sales too.

I've never liked Superstore... I think their produce is garbage, everytime I've gone there it's always been in bad shape.

I do most of my shopping at superstore & costco

I go to the T&T for meat

Safeway has some really good specials... thats the only time I go, especially when they have chicken breasts on sale for 2.99/pound. Normally its around double that price.

Superstore has probably the worst produce, but I still shop there for non-perishables and packaged goods.

I don't buy a lot of fresh meat, but usually I just get it from T&T. Save-on Foods has become fairly competitive and since it's a couple of blocks away from my place, I go there quite a bit too.

If I'm in the mood for some good produce, I usually stop by Donald's Market on Commercial on the way home from work. They also have a great selection of organic/fair-trade jazz at reasonable prices (i.e. not Whole Foods prices) if you're into that sort of thing too.

Donalds is pretty good, I go to the one on hastings by Nanaimo. One of my favourite places for fruit/vegetables is Triple A Market on Hastings by Willingdon. They have a huge selection of fresh vegetables/fruit and really good prices.

I've been pretty happy with Cioffi's on Hastings personally. Most people seem to accept that there are a few good butchers at Granville Island as well, they just are more expensive.

For general shopping I really like Stong's on Dunbar but dont usually make the trek all the way out there... I also like Thrifty's though I dont find their prices to be great. Save-On is okay but the quality is really hit and miss and I hate buying meat there.

Two EE's Farmers Market on Fraser Hwy and 164 St in Surrey. Great fresh daily produce, and just a few minutes from my house.

Save-On and Superstore for everything else depending on sales etc.

okay, a serious question now.

Why don't you ppl just get all your groceries from just one place?

Wouldn't the time saved worth the money spent?

(I don't buy groceries, so I don't know the reason behind this.)

Diff prices and qualities. Also I usually won't go too far out of my way to save a buck or two, but I do plan my routes before I go out and can sneak in a short detour to pick something up.

Different stores will have different produce from different suppliers. I generally find the quality of the produce at the Granville Island Public Market to be the best in my area. The lettuce & spinach bunches are bigger and cheaper than a local mom & pop grocery store. The English cucumbers sold at the vegetable store located in the middle of the market are bigger than the other two stores, as are the mushrooms. Everything else seems to be the same. The prices at Granville Island are standardized, but the suppliers are varied, so I tend to buy certain produce from certain stores. I know this, as I used to be a buyer for a Yaletown restaurant for many years - I shopped there every morning. They still give me restaurant pricing when I shop there and at Lobster Man...haha....

Like Senna said, different places have different products or differing quality in the products. Also, the price difference can be quite significant if you choose to buy everything from one store. If you buy most things on sale, at different stores, you can save quite a bit. It does add up, because groceries aren't cheap. As for time, if you go and buy groceries at like 9am or 10am in the morning, you can save a lot of time because you're avoiding line-ups and finding parking. By going early, you also get better selection :D

good question

i get most of my stuff from costco b/c there's a wide enough variety to get my shopping done in one trip, w/e i can't get is where a superstore trip will come into play

at costco, typically you'll save about 10% vs superstore if you shop common grocery basket items, that gap widens when compare vs safeway etc

i think teh reason why consumers shop at multiple places is they will find stuff in particular they like, and that might be the only place to get it ie. that bakery has really fresh bread, that meat shop has great cuts of meat etc.

my diet doesn't vary alot hence all of my grocery shopping is satisfied by costco/superstore

I buy my organic groceries from Price Smart Foods on 12th (Canadian Tire complex) and chinese groceries from T&T (1st ave or metrotown)

Fruits and vegetables: Kin's Farm Market...most locations have good quality. Both locations in Langley are very good.

Meats: Han Kook on Kingsway for sliced beef/pork and the occasional steak; Costco for any sort of poultry

Junk food: Superstore, where I get most of my random junk. Sometimes T&T, when I want to get my Asian snack on.

we used to buy from T&T all the time, but it gets pretty expensive, not to mention the quality of their produce is just laughable

I bought kurobata pork and i did make some home made tonkatsu.... well worth the money.

I went to granville island looking for aged meat but didnt find anything. the closest i foudn was wet aged ribeyes. I wanted dry aged. Plus the prices for their cuts are a little steep. Although the stall with the pate's/sausages were awesome.

@orange7: Either b/c there are specialty shops or b/c prices are better at different places..

If the stores are on the way from work, school, etc. then it's worth going to multiple places..

I go to Yaohan for all my grocery shopping because:

well, for us asians, some specialty goods needs to be purchased in asian markets (aka asian noodles, sauces)

I live in Richmond, and I usually go to Ackyroad's save-on and then to the small asian store a few metres away from it for noodles and sauces.

saveway is my "last-minute" place to go since i live 5 minutes away from it and usually just go there for drinks and snacks.. their deli meats do not look appealing at all.

well i kind of taken my dads method of buy stuff

i would look at the flyers of all the, for non asian stores as i live in richmond, & i have a save-on's card & a safeway card & PC bank card

then i would pop in to T&T & china riceworld & RPM afterwords just to see what else we might wanna buy

& i go to hendersons once a month or little more cuz my uncle lives at COQ & chinatown then i need to go to DT
