I know I'm near the airport, but not THAT close. For the past few weeks, once every few days, a plane will fly around my area. It's a small but loud propeller-driven plane.

This morning, it started at 5am, and it would fly by every few minutes, until 7am. It's kinda annoying cuz just when you're about to fall asleep again, it passes overhead again. I was tempted to go outside and take a pic - he was flying THAT low.

Is this guy training? Are there any rules against this at this time of day? Is there a log that shows who's flying where?

Hopefully some of you aviation buffs can shed some light into this. And others that live in this area can chime in too.

If 08L is the active runway, and if small aircraft are using it for takeoff and heading northbound, that will take them right over your house as they make their left turn after takeoff. (marpole area)

The weather conditions usually dictate what runway is active. (aircraft need to take off into wind) There are noise restrictions in place that require aircraft to climb higher before making the turn over heavily populated areas. All aircraft coming and going from yvr are monitored on radar, and they do see how high or low the aircraft are flying.

It's unlikely that anyone is doing low circles over your house. What is more likely, is that once in a while, the active runway is 08L, and there is a stream of aircraft (prop and jet) that use it for take off once in a while, and occasionally the prop aircraft (which don't climb as high and fast as jets) are still low when they cross over your house. (and by 'low' I mean 'lower than usual, but not illegally low')

You can complain to city hall and the airport authority, but you will likely get the same response.

I would suggest not living next to an airport.

Thanks for the responses so far.

An important thing that I failed to mention is that this prop plane is the ONLY plane I've noticed in my area that is a bit of a nuisance, and it's always 5-7am these past few days/weeks. I have no way of knowing if it's the same plane or different planes, but this morning I clearly remember hearing it fly overhead, hear its noise in the distance, and hear it come by again, repeatedly.

It's not like in the evening when I see a commercial jetliner come in for landing. You hear the noise, you see the plane, and the noise dissipates as the plane lands. Here, you hear it above you constantly as if he is indeed flying circles around my neighbourhood.

Next time I hear it, I'm gonna try to run outside and film it on video.

yah its the stupid planes dropping pesticide over south vancouver and richmond to kill some sort of moth. They fly fairly low and are quite loud.

They're done with the spraying, as far as I know, now.

I never saw the plane myself over Richmond... but about 10 years ago Conair from Abbotsford did the spraying.

Hard to tell early in the morning sun after just waking up - only thing I can say for sure is small aircraft (1-2 people at most), propeller driven, and maybe dark green in colour.

In all seriousness though, you can't fly below 500 feet above ground level in built up areas without special permission. That insecticide scenario sounds pretty likely.

Looks like a twin, but might be the angle. Its definitely spraying though, you can see on the trailing edges of the wings, and the spray pattern behind the plane.

He can go down to 500ft or so if he's in uncontrolled airspace. But you said you live by the airport so he's probably in their CZ so they've cleared him to do that.

So one just flew over my area and it looks like this plane( or a newer model i guess, white with red strips ). still going around and it is f-ing loud and low!

I was wondering about this myself too, as it flies pretty much right over my house. Ended up getting up early and decided to go to work early at 6. This is the plane:

It goes up and down 3 road and makes a u turn over marpole. It actually dipped to 100ft at some points.
