: Any oldschool bicycle guru's out there?

I recently picked up an oldschool 12spd peugeot road bike offa craigslist.

I'm trying to pull the rear hub area apart but I can't get the cassette off. I've got a lockring removal tool that fits perfectly, but this cassette isn't like any I've seen on the internet. It's oldschool suntour, so I think it's OG material for the bike.

Anyway, most lockrings look like this:

and mine looks like this:

Notice the extra piece around the outside of the lockring. The tool I bought fits right into the inner ring.

So any suggestions on how to get this thing apart without wrecking it?

Thanks!!

there's a bike store in kerrisdale thats really good that would be able to get that for you. Same with the ones in Vancouver (it could be called simons maybe?) it's a pretty common part it looks like.

Yeah there's a few pretty close to me, but I'd like to do it myself so I know how to next time it happens. Thanks for the suggestion!

buy the part and do it your self. I'm not talking about getting them to do the work.

Do you need to unscrew the outer ring? (if thats the one you are referring to) maybe try and use a pair of pliers and turn the outer ring with the two slots?

Are you mobile? I was a bike mechanic for years many moons ago I can get that off for you. Its simple should only take a few minutes.

I guess that's what I'm asking. Do I need to unscrew that outer ring? I've got the tool for the inner ring. I already broke one set of needlenose pliers trying to get the inner ring.

I would much rather figure out how to get it done myself than have someone do it for me.

nope, I don't have a chain whip atm. all of the how to's and videos i've seen for the suntour gear has always been anti-clockwise

Go to Our Community Bikes on Main and 17th, you still get to do it yourself but they might give you some pointers...if you get fed up and want it done.
