upgraded to the new linksys N wireless router, and now whenever i download torrents from the laptop. net slows down to a crawl. but when i'm not downloading, instantly the net goes back up to full speed. it doesnt happen with my old linksys G wireless router.

More connections does not necessarily mean faster downloads. If you have too many open connections, your router won't be able to handle it.

Start low, maybe around 100. If your download speeds are sufficient, leave it be. If not, increment the value by 5 or 10. Continue to increment until you don't see any discernible improvement in downloads speed. Honestly, I don't go about 100 and I do fine.

Try stopping any active uploads (seeding) on your torrent client and see if that helps. Believe it or not, maxing out your upload speed is going to kill your download speeds. I notice in your speedtest that your upload speed is VERY slow.

EDIT: If you think it's the router's fault, try connecting the modem directly to your PC and try your tests again. If it's fine, then it's the router. If not, the connection could be the problem.

in addition to experimenting with # of connections and QoS and also port forwarding, I was in the same situation as you with my older computer. I'm not sure if Shaw flagged MAC addresses for controlling bandwidth. I recently built a new computer and running w7 and ubuntu on it. zero slow downs with the exact same router and shaw account.
