And she was asking for money, claiming that her car ran out of fuel. I didn't have my blinds open but my lights were on. This wouldn't be the first time that someone has claimed their car ran out of fuel and knocked on our door asking for money.
I think they are testing to see if anyone is home when we leave the lights on.
I had a similar encounter during midnight one day except the guy was claiming to be my neighbor and he was asking for money for diapers for his baby but he said he had no money or credit cards because he lost his wallet earlier in the day. I was thinking the same thing as you, that they were just checking to see if someone was in my house because some of my lights were on too.

Wow some of these people are so creative with their stories... and brazen!

Shoulda opened the door with a chainsaw in hand, covered in blood. And in a polite voice ask her how she managed to run out of gas.
do that but instead, come out from the back door and sneak up on her. then she'll know how it feels to have someone unexpected coming up to her to start a conversation.
Unless I'm expecting someone, I never open the door.
(But they'll usually call me over ringing bell or knocking the door)
I hate being disturbed by people trying to sell me something
and I'm paranoid of having home invasion. Unnecessary risk.
The worst incident though was when I was about 12 and home alone.
Some guy was knocking on my door and wouldn't go away. Tried the front,
then the back door, then the front again. Rang the bell like over 20 times.
I just continued to pretend no one was home. Then my phone rings.
I pick up my phone, and the guy on the other end is like "hey! open the door"
Turned out to be my dad's friend, and my dad was late coming home to open the
door for his friend.

happened to me too but at like 10pm one time. This guy claimed to be my neighbour and his family went out of town for a funeral. He couldnt go into the house because he doesnt have keys or anything. Needed some money for calling the family supposedly.....
Lying scumbags... it's one thing to panhandle, but it's a whole different situation when you make up a BS story to solicit money from people... then it becomes a scam.
Last week, I was walking to lunch near the Tinseltown area, and some woman walks up to my coworker and I and goes "Excuse me" and I took one look at her, and turned around to walk away, and she's like "Don't walk away, I'm not homeless or anything like that. I'm from White Rock, and my car ran out of gas..." and after listening to that much, we started walking away... and she has the audacity to start swearing at us.
Even better is... yesterday, since it was raining, I walked to the underground parking lot with the same coworker and two others, and while we were there, someone approaches us and goes "Excuse me, don't walk away, I'm not homeless or anything..." and I'm like... wait, I think I've heard this before... I didn't recognize her right away, but my coworker did, and he goes "You talked to us the other day, and you swore at us" and she looks at us and has a "Duhhhh" look on her face, and then goes "Well, um, I don't recognize you", but then turns away from us two and directs her attention to the other two and continues the story with them! LoL... like you're going to get any money from them after we just told them you gave us the same spiel a few days ago and swore at us when we didn't give you any money...
I was home middle of the day, middle of the week. I hear this knocking at my door, not the door bell, and at the back door. Every time Jehovah witness' or college pro painter's come to the front door and rings the door bell. So I to go answer the back door thinking its someone I know, but am not expecting, turns out it some weird lookin guy i have never met before, then Im like wtf do you want and hes like, is this ?????? I was like uhhh no, that a few streets over. Worst part is that there is a street sign in front of my house. So I walked him to his car and watched him leave. Just gave me a weird feeling...
Reminds me of the time when years back infront of the seabus terminal on the DT side an okay looking couple (white guy/Asian girl) stopped me and asked me for bus money to catch the seabus home to north van. I was young and obliviuos to drug problems, etc at the time, but I had no money so I kinda felt bad for not helping out.
Few years later I see these two again in the exact same spot. Except this time you could tell crack and other drugs got the best of them. They were super thin, dirty and had scabs. I kinda joked to myself though that I coulda stopped their problems had I just given them some money to go back to north van years earlier instead of them having to search for bus change on the street the last 3 or 4 years. The guy that came to the door was white and claimed he was my neighbor which I found weird because 95% of the people on my block are brown.. my only guess would be he's somebody's tenant, but his story probably was not true.
