| university question.. SFU or UBC
hey everyone!
i have been accepted to sfu business and ut miss. business.
but my goal was to get into ubc business.
i am wonder if its easier to transfer from sfu business to ubc business or... ubc arts to ubc commerce?

SFU Business. From what i've heard from graduated students, SFU is the way to go. And IIRC, Macleans ranks SFU higher than UBC for business (but i believe that was at a graduate level)

I'd say SFU.
But transfering to UBC business from SFU is a hassel. Hell, transfering to UBC from any other institution is a hassel.
I had a friend who went to SFU in first year then transferred into UBC commerce second year, you just have to make sure that all your credits from SFU are transferable. From what I heard, UBC will only accept credits from other institutions as long as they offer the same course.
There's this site that lets you check which credits are usable and which are not but I can't remember... Maybe try googling it.
But if you could, I would go UBC arts then transfer to commerce in second year just to avoid all the transfer credit hassel. Apparently first year commerce courses are the basics, very similar to arts where you take eng, econ and some science credits. As long as you keep at least 80% average then you have a good chance of getting into UBC commerce your second year.

BCtransferguide is the site to check for credit transfer.
SFU does have a good business program, and the chances of getting into a co-op @ sfu is a lot higher.. but, like many sfu does not offer the "status" that UT and UBC offers.
IMO, if you are willing/ highly involved in extra-curricular activities (such as student organizations and volunteer work) i'd choose ubc arts than transfer to UBC business .. or just go to UT

I'd also go with SFU, especially for undergrad... you may find that you just want to stay in business here.
However, if you're really fixed on going to UBC in the long run then transfering from arts might be the way to go. Just because you're considered an art student doesn't mean you have to take arts classes... Simply take classes that meet your WQB requirements and are relevant to the program you want to apply for and you should be fine so long as you keep your CGPA up.

A lot of my UBC friends tell me SFU Business is better than UBC Comm. I have no idea how true it is since they're all UBC science students so I take it with a grain of salt. It depends on what you plan to study but things like Acct and MIS are very good at SFU. If you're doing finance, definitely go to UBC. The co-op program at SFU is also very good.
The only other thing that might sway your decision is campus life. UBC campus life is a million times better than SFU. SFU's campus life is pretty pathetic. After 2:30pm the campus is literally a ghost town.

Kwantlen Business -- its more practical than SFU! SFU is a lot of theory and fictional projects.
With Kwantlen term projects, you deal with real businesses, that affect real people.

Both are equal, unless for some strange reason they weight the supplemental portion differently (highly doubt it though).
The difference is when you're at SFU, not only can you take your 1st and 2nd year business classes, but you can try transferring both after 1st year and 2nd year. At UBC you will either have to leave in 2nd year and go to some college or you can stick around and try to transfer to 2nd year again after you've completed your 2nd year for a different degree. Worse case scenario about being at SFU? You're stuck at SFU Business (unless of course, you get kicked out).
My advice? Go to UTM, try to transfer to Rotman. Will be the best 4 years of your life.

Depends on what you plan on doing after graduation. If you're unsure of the below, try to figure out a general direction.
Where do you want to work? BC? Toronto? Internationally?
What do you want to do? What industry do you want to work in?
What's your ultimate career aspiration/end game? CEO? Entrepreneur?
And of course there are things to do weigh such as staying at home in BC vs. living on rez elsewhere.

Thanks for all the replies! really helped a lot.
For now, i think ill go into sfu business first.. going into ubc art is kinda scary.. dont really want to be stuck in arts and not being able to transfer out of it. Quote:

im planning to go into hotel management and my ultimate goal is to own a hotel.

Doesn't matter. Go with the school that offers the most opportunities while you're enrolled. Volunteering and gathering work experience while you goto school will help you more in the long run then the brand name of the school. If you're going for your masters go with sfu tri-semester program to finish faster.
