this isnt the first giant sinkhole in guatemala.
im guessing poor sewage/drainage systems washed away the under soil and the top layer collapsed.

CNN.com

"In the northern part of Guatemala City, the downpour created a giant sinkhole that swallowed up a space larger than the area of a street intersection. Residents told CNN that a three-story building and a house fell into the hole.

A local newspaper reported that a private security guard was killed when the sinkhole opened up, but authorities had not confirmed the fatality. Residents said that a poor sewage drainage system underground was to blame for the sinkhole. A similar hole opened up nearby last year, they said. "

When C02 or carbon mixes with rain water forming carbonic acid. Rainfall makes the groundwater acidic as it travels into the ground. When it contacts carbonate rocks it dissolves it, eating away the rock. So the hole probably developed for a long time. The tornado probably made the surface collapse.

This one was in 2007 in Guatemala city. Even deeper!

According to my edumacated gf, Guatemala has a vast network of underground rivers and caverns. Add a poorly constructed sewer system washing out the ground, and you get a massive hole in the middle of town.

Upside? New tourist destination. Market it to the millionaire spelunking crowd or something.

They are called Cinote's and they are very common in central and south America.
