Sony Vaio Z vs. Hp Envy 15

Hello Rsers,

I need to purchase a laptop within the next couple of days, and I've narrowed my choices between two laptops. The laptop will be used primarily for CAD and 3D work but gaming and multimedia are also very important. One more thing, the laptop needs to be purchased at bestbuy/futureshop.

the Sony Vaio Z series 13"
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...3b3c6f2654en02

Pros: Portability, Battery Life, Pimp-factor
Cons: SSD HD is only 128gbs, Not 1080p, 2 Less GB of ram

or

the HP Envy 15"
http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...y156laptopf-en

Pros: Larger screen (1080p), Faster Processor, 6GB ram
Cons: 2 Hour battery life, Non-Backlit Keyboard, Slower HDD, HP's absolutely shit reliability

The price different between the two laptops is about $150 (the Sony being more expensive), so therefore price is not an issue.

TIA!

You do know that there is no version of autocad for OSX.

My top choice because you can game on it and it has a real long battery live.

ASUS U30JC-A1
http://www.compu2000.com/index.php?l...detail&p=11832

Will be ordering one in a few days.

am i missing something here?
why are these 2 laptops so expensive?? (especially the sony)

laptop of similar spec are usually around $900-1400.

Biggest difference I see btw is that the HP has discrete 4830 video card...good if you are looking for a desktop replacement or gaming machine.

but for CAD and most office you work you'll probably see bigger benefit with the SSD HD.

and generally i think 15" is way too big if you are planning on carrying it around. i'd take the sony if i have to choose between 1 of them, at least chicks will dig it.

Its expensive because the sony is made of better materials and probably way lighter than any of the competitors.

Personally I'd pick the sony, but thats only becuase I've been using the Z line since it was the SZ series and I'm biased.

1600x900 is high enough resolution for me on such a small screen.
You can add ram up to 8gb iirc.
128gb is more than enough, if you're going to watch movies and download tons or music/porn just stick it on an external hard drive. Everyone has one of those dedicated to porn right?

I think the benefit of weight and battery life alone make it better than the HP, actually anything is better than HP. Only issue is price and since you're even considering the Sony, price must not be an issue.

Sony +1... high-end Sony's laptop are very very good.

I've went through a couple of them within the last 10 years or so... they are almost indestructible... many of them fell to the ground multiple times... not a glitch with the computer. The worst case was I broke the DVD-Rom plastic hinge... but still fully functional

Sony. I have been using a SR490 for about 9 months, still loving it.

HP/Compaq starts dying after 1 year, I hope my Sony is okay.

I need to be able to use CAD, 3Ds Max. I also game. I wouldn't be able to use any of those things on a mac without dual booting.

Nice laptop, and great choice. But this will be my primary computer for the next couple of years so I would prefer to buy something with higher specs just in case.

Thanks for the advice, I'm leaning toward the Sony myself. The Sony is expensive because it is made out of magnesium and carbon fibre. It is also less than 4lbs from what I remember.

Good to know about resolution, that was the main issue I was worried about.

Ban, I also had the vpcz11 and one thing i didn't like was that it got hot after long usage(even on a zalman cooler), you should go test the instore unit and make it play some media for about 10 mins or something comparable to what you need to use it for(bring it on a usb stick . Don't get me wrong its a great machine and i loved the sh*t out of it but as we all know any prolonged heat will kill the life of any electronics. Just my 2cents. Good luck on the buy!

I just noticed you wanted CAD 3D and gaming. The Sony's integrated video is gonna suck for that. You'll want something with built in Nvidia or ATI graphics.

All Z series has a dedicated graphics card and integrated card. There's a switch for which one you want to use.

Current Z series has NVIDIAŽ GeForceŽ GT 330M

The Z112GM is a serious, awesome laptop. I've sold a couple to customers looking for high-end laptops, they're very satisfied. Three Envy's have had to be RMA'd to HP because of overheating issues... and that's from sitting in store playing a screensaver slideshow/HD media playlist on a notebook cooling pad.

Core i5, GT330M, SSD. Seriously fast.

Ahh my bad. That'll teach me for only looking at FS specs. In that case no question.. Get the Sony. Hybrid graphics are great for battery life.

Played around with one a while back at the Sony Store. It felt very flimsy.
