A lotto customer in Newfoundland voided their ticket before the May 21 draw -- a ticket that was worth $30 million.
by: Bruce Edwards, edmontonjournal.com
A customer who changed their mind about buying a lottery ticket at a Newfoundland and Labrador convenience store could have won a $30 million jackpot.
"Had the player kept the ticket, I believe it would have been the largest jackpot ever won here," said Atlantic Lottery Corp. spokeswoman Jennifer Dalton. "It's a completely rare story for us."
The story began to unfold last month when an employee at Corner Store in Goulds, just south of St. John's, printed a Lotto Max ticket for the shopper, then immediately voided the stub "at the request of the customer," Dalton said.
Days later on May 21, the draw was held and each number on the rejected ticket matched the winning set for the $30 million lottery.
Dalton hasn't met with the customer and didn't know why the customer rejected the ticket, but she noted some players won't purchase tickets if they don't like the numbers randomly chosen by the lotto computer.
"Ultimately, it's the player's decision to purchase the ticket from the terminal. If it's not what the player wants, he or she can reject it," she explained.
A sales clerk must void the ticket once it is rejected by a customer.
This Friday's jackpot sits at $50 million with five $1 million prizes.

anyone seen that reality show that follows the livelihood of millionaire winners? i forgot the title but if someone knows let us know. basically it shows the dilemma of what fortune brings. some winners go broke right away and some families literally break apart because of the greed of other family members trying to leech off the fortune.

You didn't lose 30 million. You never had it. Life would continue - business as usual.
Anyways, that's just how I'd look at it. I try to stay positive.

wow, it'll drive me crazy knowing that I lost the winning ticket.
But let's face it, those of us who never bought lotto tickets COULD HAVE won the jackpot but since we never bought, we wouldnt have known we'r the winners. It's not like u bought a winning ticket and then go back & made a refund.

No.. you're dense... since when was not buying lottery tickets a bad decision. Chances of you losing your money is basically guaranteed... It's a vicious cycle. Poor people keep playing the lottery and that's what is keeping them poor.

^Unless said poor people are buying their salaries worth of lottery tickets, I don't think thats whats keeping them poor.
I heard something about returning it because the cashier rang a different price instead of what it was supposed to be, $27 instead of $10? Or is this a whole different story?
