Ever watched a movie that was much MUCH better than expected? Which was it? I'm looking for gems of movies that people don't really know about. Try not to spoiler the movie, but rather say what made it so unexpected.

One movie that I thought was going to suck but turned out really good was this:

http://www.badmovieplanet.com/unknownmovies/pictures/equilibrium2.jpg

The action and story was pretty well done... one of Christian Bale's lesser know movies.

Another one was Cube 1 & 2, (Cube 2 expecially). For such a simple plot it was rather entertaining throughout the entire duration of the movie.

Finder's Fee was a pretty sweet movie. The entire movie is based out of an apartment suite. Randomly picked it out one day at Blockbuster and it was shockingly good.

equilibrium sucks balls

i want to mention the Road because not many people have seen it, it was much better than i expected, probably the best movie i've seen this year

Miller's Crossing is another one that is a hidden gem, but it's getting a lot more attention

Fresh, i love movies about drug pushers, especially if it takes place in NY or LA, this one actually has a decent storyline, characters with depth and some comedic scenes thrown in

Everything you wanted to know about sex, a Woody Allen film consisting of a series of vignettes addressing questions about sex, funnier than any comedy i've seen since 40 year old virgin imo

Sexy Beast another british gangster movie lol
It's low budget and kind of boring @ times but Ben Kingsley WOW... he really shines (also out on blu-ray region B but for downloads) :D

yes it was an mtv film...yes it was directed by an amatuer director...but the cast did a great job ..i was hoping it was based off a true story.

if you can look past cho's performance..many asian boys that grew up in a western society can appreciate the film imo
oh and accordingly to wki The film was based loosely on the murder of Stuart Tay by four Sunny Hills High School honor students on December 31, 1992, in the suburb of Fullerton, California.

and i think 5th element & usual suspects are pretty big titles...not so much hidden gems

Possibly my favourite, though not "hidden" movie, is Pulp Fiction. Sometimes people forget about it because it's old though (1994).

Excellent cult film that spawned two mediocre TV series, an animated series, and a whole spate of dreadful, dreadful sequels, all of which ruined the original premise: "There can be only one".

Interesting what people consider "hidden gems" here

Guess it depends somewhat on the circles you travel in. Most of my close friends are huge fans of the original Highlander and universally despise the sequels, but outside of that, the bulk of people I run into have never seen it, and most of those haven't even heard of it. Most are familiar with the TV show, but never realized that it was based on a 25-year-old movie. So by that token, it might be considered "hidden".

Agreed.
Judge Gale Welsh is a woman that truly deserves a beating. And why she is still a judge is beyond me. Canadian at that. Mega fail.

Its in the same sort of Humour catagory as Hangover, Dodgeball, Eurotrip, etc. Didnt think it was gonna be anything good and ended up laughing so much during the movie.

I think it's safe to say, a hidden gem movie is probably one that isnt super high budget, and probably did not have a nation/continent wide release.

...so, c'mon, stop posting these multi million dollar fucking internationally known movies.
