I must say I'm at the ending of Invictus right now and it's weird not hearing those fucken horns. Kinda driving me a bit crazy.
Netherlands vs Cameroon... Do you guy's think Netherlands are gonna start their star players? (Van Persie, Sneijder, Van der Vaart?)
Harvey Specter

England had to score (i think) one more goal and they would have not played Germany. A lot of "experts" are saying that Germany will win but I still think the current German team is way too hyped up.

06-23-2010, 11:49 PM
the US is just lucky to be in that group. Put them in group G & see how they'd feel.
But US is gonna play the weaker team from group D, pretty likely that they'll advance to final 8. THEN they'll get owned by Germnay. :haha:
Really?
They've been jewed by the refs on two sure goals now which would have got them two wins and a tie. That offside call today was horrible but they scored in the 91st minute or else that would have been the story today again, the refs.
This is the team that beat Spain in the confederations cup. Spain is much better then Germany, so don't be surprised to see them beat Germany.
where's Robben?
Injured in the last world friendly. Still healing, almost 100%.

Nope they have 1GF and 3GA while Portugal has 7GF and 0 GA. So even if they both tie with 4 points, Portugal goes thru.

Just watching the Italy game again, man Italy looked so weak for most of the game and only came out to play when they went down 2-0. If they had given a little more effort in the first half and got the lead, they would have won.

If Brazil beats Portugal 1-0, Ivory Coast would then need 10 goals against North Korea to win by Goal Differential.

NOTHING should ever be held in South Africa ever again except a vuvuzella concert...and that's only so they know where to aim the missiles.

The vuvuzellas were annoying at first but I'm use to the vuvuzellas now.
And if you can, find a live feed for ESPN on the net. I have dish network at home and the ESPN picture, audio and overall quality is much better compared to CBC. Only downside is they have one host who yaps about the US team non stop and acts like the US team are a bunch of soccer gods.

you can't really blame the ref or the ref's assistance in this case as from their angle, all they see is the ball drop straight down, it's almost impossible for them to call that a goal from their viewing position. If you're gonna place blame, blame FIFA for rejecting instant reply. Even the English Premiership didn't want instant reply, oh how the apple taste now..
Despite the call, Germany was clearly the better team, they were much faster, their passes were more accurate, they had better runs on the ball and their counter-attack was superb.
For England, aside from Gerrald, the rest of the team are made up of a bunch of prima donnas. Roony is a good player for Man U, but when he plays on the international level, he's no where the world class striker everyone makes him out to be. This tournament, this game, the dude was invisible. England, until you get a goalie, you;ll never have a legitimate chance at winning world or euro cup.

Depends on what you find best? You can either watch a lopsided game like Portugal-Korea, or watch one of the lesser scoring games. I haven't watched much games last 3days but up to that point I really thought England-USA was a good game to watch.

Corruption much? Like wtf is wrong with Fifa? How is the game "exciting" when refs completely fuck up games with stupid calls and miss calls like the England call and the offside in the Mexico game. /rant.

Yeah, let's take away a teams hard effort on getting back into the game and make the hardcore fans lose sleep at night. Gee, that's fucking exciting.
I don't mind fouls being at the discretion of the ref, but video reply should be brought into the game for goals.

For red-carded/yellow-turned-red offences as well I think. The ref already has that little mic and shit, why not have some people upstairs reviewing stuff and telling him whats up. Then when the whistle is blown, they can check all the camera angles and see what exactly happened. There would be more stoppage time but who cares, the game would be much better

tough as in there is a chance that your clear goals will be waved off?
tough as in you have to worry about the opposing team running into you but you get a yellow card for it?
cuz i know you dont meant physically tough
and instant replays please, why does the ref make all the decisions, what if they're calling games?

I'm playing devil's advocate here, but you can't say soccer is not a physically demanding sport. Yes, its tough on the mind too, yes, it can seem unfair, but how many times have you heard people say that life is unfair?
Its one of the most simplest sports televised and its the lack of technology that allows anyone anywhere around the world to pick up the ball and play. If you implement technology into the decisions of the game, you're taking away from what the sport is.
Now lets think about hockey and football? How many times have we seen refs give bad calls even with the presence of technology? No matter what you add into a game, people will always bitch, complain, and moan about the game being unfair to a certain degree and will demand something to be added. I wouldn't be surprised if the most of the bitching is coming from butt-hurt North Americans too.
However, I do think some sort of goal-line technology like in hockey would be a great addition to the game.
Fuck tradition it's all about evolving and improving the game. If you can make the game better why wouldn't you?
Because then its not the same game, only in North America people don't give a shit about tradition. Think of it this way, people are playing the same soccer that was played by their fathers and grandfathers back in the day. To some people, thats really meaningful.

It's anyone's game... All the teams that are in right now deserve to be where they are. All of them are the best of the best. But it's going to be a close game.
Netherlands (HUP HUP) are unbeaten so far, but from what I always hear, they have some curse that makes them screw up. Hopefully this isn't true. Robben is back and he's fucking rape.
Germany is a young team, good passing, rape-age offence, and mediocre defence, their goalie is questionable too, but they are one of the best contenders..
Brazil is Brazil, and Argentina is Argentina. 2 teams that usually make it far in the tournament from experience and skill... and Maradona is doing pretty good :p
Spain = Lots of known players but they haven't been able to show their true power...Before the whole thing I thought they would rape every team like 99-0. But that hasn't been the case...

Pfft when you consider that 8 of those matches were in their World Cup qualifiers against such mighty world powers as Norway, Scotland, Macedonia and Iceland, and that in their international friendlies before the World Cup they drew Italy & Paraguay, and only managed to beat the US and Mexico 2-1, it's not very impressive, despite what they've done in the group stage. They did look pretty good against Slovakia, but it's all ending once they face Brazil. Not like that matters though, because Germany's taking it all!

The integrity of the game is compromised because they refused to utilize technology? They're BARELY changing the game by adding in video replay. All they are doing is making sure the right call is made and not cheat anyone out of a goal. I'm sure if they had video review back then they would use it.
And I'm not sure but did their fathers and grandfathers back in the day dive and grab their leg in agony whenever there's the slightest contact?
Assuming they didn't and instead of cracking down on diving they keep with "tradition" and let it go. Does this make the game better?

Its not the same game when you rely on technology to make the calls for you. The result of using cameras to make calls is that the referee becomes lazier and more dependent on technology. And you can't say technology makes our lives more efficient because its a given fact that technology is disruptive.
People always believe that technology will improve everything (and yes, its awesome having the things we have today), however, technology causes us to focus on other things and creates new problems (example, people used typewriters at work, computers were introduced, people started to do more than just work with computers). Or how about the Zamboni incident at the skating oval. Yes, its a "nice to have" but it causes other things than work to happen. I mean you wonder, why didn't anyone just check to make sure the Zamboni was working properly? Its such a simple task.
Result from this added technology is that the referee becomes "lazier" and he starts to miss other calls. Next thing you know people will want cameras following every player to make sure nobody gets hit. After each hit, ref gets someone to review the tapes causing the game to become even longer. Shit, all of a sudden you realize we're watching FOOT-BALL, not "futbol".
Argentina is going to crush Germany next game !!!!!!!!
I'm actually excited for this game, it should be pretty good

If our life is all about traditions we'd still be living in the stone age with no tv, computers, ipods or cell phones. Hell, the Enlightenment would have been deemed heresy and all the philosophers of the Enlightenment would have been beheaded because they were expressing un-traditional ideas.
Refs nowadays have too much power, whether it be football or hockey. Adding technology to the game to determine the validity of calls will not make refs lazier, but force them do their job better. They won't be able to get away with bs calls because they will be proven wrong by the video and be embarrassed on national television for being incompetent. Yea, human errors are also possible, but calls that are clearly wrong should be corrected. In fact, making bs calls should be considered lazy because they're calling EVERYTHING they see without thinking it through.

if we introduced instant replays then we'd have to stop and watch every potential offside and hit and dive.
And what then? What if it was called on side and it was off? Or a dive was an actual hit? Do we have more free kicks or do we put players into the penalty box for 2 minutes?

Maybe they could just review goals while the game is playing and adjust the score as need be. But even then it would be tricky if a goal happened super late in the game. I'm sure that is why they don't review goals - they don't have much of a system in place without altering the game.
Another idea would be to stop the reviewing time so no injury time is needed. Or, they can skip the whole video replay thing and put an official behind each goal line.

I'm actually excited for this game, it should be pretty good
Refs are human and make errors too. They are not to be blamed for missed called. We live in the year 2010 when cameras are EASILY accessible. It woulda taken them no more than 1-2 minutes. Ref walks over to the side with a tiny tv. They show it's clearly in. Overrule the goal. Done. Flow barely disrupted. CORRECT call is made. Game is no longer determined because 1 out of thousands of people in the stadium missed the goal.
if we introduced instant replays then we'd have to stop and watch every potential offside and hit and dive.
And what then? What if it was called on side and it was off? Or a dive was an actual hit? Do we have more free kicks or do we put players into the penalty box for 2 minutes?
If you watch a sport like hockey then the rules are only goals are allowed to go to video replay. Any other calls like offsides or penalties are not allowed to be reviewed.
Nothing feels worse than losing because of bad call. Not losing 10-1, not losing 2-1 ion a tight game.

Lets lift the mood in this thread....

I'm in favor of adding review system, but some limitation has to be planted to avoid abuse.
One thing I can think of is, they get 3 subs in the game, if they want to challenge any of the referee's decision, they lose 1 sub opportunity every time, if no more subs opportunity is available, certain advantage must be given to the other team. Maybe limit 1 player certain amount of time from playing in the game.
Last but not least, the referee still obtain full right to make the final decision based on his interpretation.
This way, everything stays pretty much the same and team will not challenge unless it's absolutely necessary

A nice write up in the Sun today of one my close friends. I actually got another autograph Cristiano Ronaldo jersey in the mail 2 days ago from him, I've asked him for game worn shoes or a game worn jersey but doubt I'll get that.
http://media.greenradio.topscms.com/images/a0/c9/731b4d3f4b62bc47b838c6f8fc19.png
VANCOUVER — Daniel Fernandes remembers kicking a soccer ball on the streets of east Vancouver with friends on warm summer evenings.
He remembers snowboarding on Mount Seymour, playing basketball, volleyball, roller hockey and rugby.
There was just about no sport that the 26-year-old didn’t try.
But the Portuguese-Canadian settled on soccer because it wasn’t as dangerous as sports like snowboarding and because of his love of Europe which has close ties to the game.
Now, as third goalkeeper on the Portuguese national team at the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in South Africa, the Vancouver native wants to say thank you to the people who supported and motivated him before he crossed the ocean at age 17 to join the youth system in Portugal.
“For me, being a Canadian-Portuguese means so much to me,” he said over a crackling phone line from South Africa while huddled with teammates in advance of Tuesday’s big game against Spain. “To all the people who supported me in Vancouver, to all the people I know and to even the people who don’t know me but have followed me, I would like to send my heart.”
He knows that his Portuguese father Antonio, a construction worker, and his Czech mother Brenda, a nurse, are watching the games back in Vancouver with his brother Tony.
His other brother Nelson is in South Africa with him along with a best friend.
As the third goalkeeper, Fernandes, who played very briefly with the Vancouver Whitecaps, knows his chances of getting on the field at the World Cup are slim, but he isn’t frustrated by this.
“Frustration isn’t something in a top athlete’s mind. You should be positive and motivated,” he said. “You have got to be ready at any second. You have to train at the highest level.”
Being part of the FIFA tournament in South Africa has already provided many memorable moments. Playing against the five-time champions Brazil, which resulted in a 0-0 draw, was near the top.
“As a kid, I always watched Brazil-Portugal games. That really stuck in my head as I realized here I was at the World Cup. It was beautiful.”
He has also got to know Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese team captain, soccer heartthrob and the game’s highest-paid player.
Ronaldo, who has yet to shine at this World Cup, scored 26 goals in 29 matches for Real Madrid this season, but has only a late strike in Portugal’s 7-0 rout of North Korea.
“He loves what he does and I respect that,” said Fernandes. “He (sets) a good example on the field and even off the field.”
Fernandes says he loves Canada and Portugal equally. He hopes that one day he will see a World Cup soccer tournament in Canada.
But for now, he is thinking of only one thing — a big win against Spain.
“We don’t want any ifs on the Portuguese national team. We have to be our best.”

^ Well only because:
there's so few scoring chances, a 1 minute highlight is plenty of time to capture it all.
there's no drama. Players diving and getting hurt is normal. There's no fighting of course, this is a pretty discipline sport.
So there isn't really any "extra stuff" worth watching that happened in the game that might get left out in a highlight.
I just find watching 90+ minutes just to pick out 10 scoring chances is a bit tough to remain focused throughout the entire game.
Not really sitting on the edge of my seat. How do the rest of you guys do it?
The thing is, I love playing soccer though, probably my favourite sport.

That was not the worst penalty kick attempt - it was actually pretty good. The worst thing Komano will have to deal with is the fact that his shot was just an inch away from going into the net. I've seen other soccer players miss by miles.
When you're on such a big stage, someone is bound to fold and it just so happened to be Komano. Pressure is a huge factor.

Still, my main point was the fact that his shot wasn't as bad as other soccer players who don't even manage to hit the post.
I was speaking figuratively when I said, "he missed by an inch". Whether it be by one inch or a few, Komano will have to live with the fact that he was THAT close to getting his shot in.

When you miss, you miss, it doesn't matter if you hit the post or shot it 10 ft wide, there's no moral victories, you let yourself, your team, your country down. You think Komano's gonna feel any different from Baggio, Beckman?
neggo
06-29-2010, 09:57 AM
You're right - a miss is a miss. But a miss that could have went in by a few inches would certainly feel a hell of a lot more crappy for me than if I missed by a mile. I think we can all agree that getting so close to something you really want and not getting it hurts much more than when you're not even close to begin with.
Either way, Komano will, unfortunately, be remembered as the man that essentially let his whole nation down.

SOLUTION:
Only Review:
-Goals
-Penalties in the 18 yard box
what I was thinking is:
they have a review team upstairs, even just a couple of the refs that aren't on a pitch reffing a game atm (no hiring extra people) and these guys would
-review goals. by the time a teams done all the goal celebrations, they can tell the ref for sure if it was a goal or not. zero time lost.
-as above, penalties inside the 18
-review red cards. if a guy gets tossed, the guys upstairs review it (while play continues) and if it's found that a red should not have been given, the player gets let back on. (theoretically they could review yellows too) alternately the team could be allowed to get 1 red reviewed per half if they request it, but this would stop play.
don't review every foul and crap tho. just big stuff.
my gf argued that this would lose the refs credibility, and the players would argue stuff more. but to me, it shouldn't because the guys confirming decisions are upstairs anyways, AND these refs credibility has to be shit now anyways with all these calls that are obviously bad once reviewed on TV.

Speaking for myself here, but I rarely get bored watching a soccer game.
I've played since I can remember... and not play as you probably play ( as in run around chasing a ball and kicking it nowhere once in a while ). I guess it can't really be explained in words, and you have to have it in you to truly understand it.
