| VANDU: Reduce speed limit to 30km/hr limit on Hastings
WTF?? How about the fucking crackheads and junkies just stop jaywalking? And why in the blue hell did Vancouver council/mayor give $65k -$100k to these idiots to research this? Quote:
The speed limit on a section of Hastings Street should be dropped to 30 kilometres per hour, a new report states.
“We found that Vancouver was really behind on pedestrian safety,” said study author Lani Russwurm.
In the report, “We’re all Pedestrians,” the authors recommend reducing the speed limit on Hastings Street, between Abbott and Jackson streets, from 50 km/hr to 30 km/hr.
“If [the reduced speed limit] saves a life, then that’s the bottom line for me,” city councillor Kerry Jang said. “I know that’s it something our engineering department supports, and it could be implemented very quickly with minimal costs to the city.”
Jang said the City of Vancouver gave approximately $100,000 to VANDU, the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users to conduct the study.
But Russwurm, a researcher hired by VANDU, said the project received only $65,000. City staff were not available to give the exact amount provided by the Great Beginnings fund from the city.
The study was prompted following the release of an SFU study in 2009 stating that the Downtown Eastside was the most dangerous location for pedestrians. The area accounted for nine of the 32 identified pedestrian-injury hot spots and 10 percent of the injuries recorded between 2000 and 2005.
“We have to treat it like a school zone,” said Jang, adding that VANDU led the study because of “its familiarity with the neighbourhood and the community there.”
Vancouver Police Const. Jana McGuinness said the police are supportive of any measures that reduce the number of collisions.
“But the reality is that it’s more about pedestrian behaviour. Speed is not so much the contributing factor down there,” she said.
TransLink has voiced concerns about a reduced speed limit, said spokesman Drew Snider.
In a letter to VANDU dated May 14, appendiced in the report, Michael Shiffer, vice-president of TransLink writes:
“It is important that we avoid creating new problems while attempting in a well-intentioned manner, to solve one problem.”
Vancouver City Council will now review the study, but there is no indication if and when the recommendations will be adopted. | http://www.theprovince.com/news/Spee...825/story.html |

What a stupid report. Quote:
“But the reality is that it’s more about pedestrian behaviour. Speed is not so much the contributing factor down there,” said Vancouver Police Const. Jana McGuinness.
| It's not pedestrian behaviour - it's fucking crackhead behaviour!
Selfish of me to say this, but we'd be doing the community a favour by running over a junkie!

^ This report is making me rage. They're basically saying it's okay to jaywalk. Notice the police are also saying that speed is not the problem here.
The biggest problem I have with this besides the principle itself is that next thing you know, cops are tagging people left and right even when there's no traffic and it's like 9pm. New Westminster downtown anyone?
I'm behind this one if they raise speed limits by 30km/h on all stretches of highway in this town and 20km/h on all city streets elsewhere.
Seriously guys, we have to get out there and VOTE certain people out of office. Kerry Jang being one of them. The hippies running our city are basically saying that "anyone who drives a car is evil", and these people have got to go.

Most of the time that section of the streets is always clogged up in traffic anyways.

I can't believe that there's a fucking organization called "Vancouver area network of drug users"...
Should be more appropriately named: "Vancouver Area Network of people who contribute nothing to society"

RISE THE SPEED LIMIT TO FUCKING 80!!!!!!!!
If lazy fucking faggots want to walk in the middle of the road let them, I wouldn't mind breaking a bitches legs so they never walk for the rest of their lives for being retards and deciding to wak on a mother fucking road for cars... FUCKING wait for cars to pass atleast, not just walk into traffic.
On Hastings I usually drive around 70 because I don't give a fuck about homeless natives, I've almost hit a few people but I don't care... go fuck yourself lazy fags. FUCK

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The City of Vancouver is looking at reducing the speed limit on part of Hastings Street to help reduce pedestrian casualties.
The focus is on a nasty stretch near Main, which is identified as the most dangerous location in the region for pedestrians, and a report to city council suggests dropping the limit to 30 km/h.
The Province Newspaper reports Vancouver gave roughly $100,000 to the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users to do the study.
The area has almost a third of the region's pedestrian injury hot spots, but the Vancouver Police tell the paper the reality is it's more about pedestrian behaviour; speed is not so much a contributing factor on that stretch of Hastings. Vancouver City Council will review the report.
which also means there are too many retards on the streets

Lol wouldn't it make more sense to INCREASE the speed limit? Cars having to go even slower will just make it more safer and encouraging for crackheads to take their sweet time hauling a buggy across. Posted via RS Mobile |

u can't just lower the speed limit to 30 and expect to save lives..these hobos will slow down 40% if the speed limit is lowered by 40%. u'll just get the same thing but slower for everyone.
