The funny thing is not only was he eating on a $1 a day he was also giving food to the food bank on a $1 a day..
Watched tons of news in the US/Cad about how a "smart mom" went all over the place to collect coupons + used her iphone to get electronic ones etc etc. Bought $200+ worth of stuff (can feed someone for 10-20 days easily) for like $1 or 99cts etc.

One option would be to go across the border once a week to do grocery shopping. Gas would pretty much work out free since the cost of driving down there would be offset by the fact that you would pay like $10 less to fill up your tank. (depending where you live)

In addition to the money you save by filling up there too, it's worth the trip ;)

Thats what I meant.. you will save at leas $10 filling up down there vs here... Even if it works out that it costs you $10 in gas to drive there and back you are coming out ahead on cost of everything else..

If you're really wanting to cheap out, you can go without meat for a little while, although if you find it at the right place, meat can be quite cheap, if you're willing to cook it yourself.

No, it's not.
There is one retail chain that does allow coupon stacking in Canada, and that is London Drugs.
Of course, this means you're never going to be able to get groceries for free here, since they don't sell that, but you can get other household items like shampoo, razors, toothpaste, cleaners, laundry detergent, etc. for free or almost free.
Trust me, I know the coupon game... did it as a hobby for awhile last year... it was actually a lot of fun.

Wa, can't they refuse you at this point in the future?
Why would they? London Drugs isn't losing any money. They're going to get reimbursed by the manufacturer. In fact, it just increases their sales.
What such coupons allow you to do that?!
Pretty much any coupon, as long as it doesn't say "Cannot be combined with other coupons" or something like that, which most do not. Most coupons say "Limit one coupon per purchase", but London Drugs interprets that as only one of the SAME coupon per purchase, and each "purchase" means one item.
For example, if you want to buy an item that's $5, you can't use five of the same $1 coupons to get the item for free, but you CAN use a $1 coupon from a magazine, a $1 coupon from the newspaper, a $1 coupon from online, a 50¢ coupon from save.ca, and a $1.50 coupon from the store to get the item for free.
I am surprised they actually paid you the difference. Could you provide some tips on how this is done? I want to start doing this for a hobby too :haha:
Well, technically they shouldn't have. They made a mistake there. Going by the book, they can reduce the value of the item down to zero with coupons, but you should still be on the hook for the taxes based on the original cost.
One tip is that you can actually first do a price match at London Drugs before using the coupons.

If you're really wanting to cheap out, you can go without meat for a little while, although if you find it at the right place, meat can be quite cheap, if you're willing to cook it yourself.
I just bought 10 bone-in chicken breasts and about 5 racks of ribs for $43 at IGA. 2 for 1 sale, price was marked up slightly from normal (like $1/kg more), yet still I have enough meat for ~20 meals.
You can probably do cheaper, yet for being 3 blocks away from my house, that was a pretty good deal.
I basically only buy meat when it is onsale and plan my meals around that. I usually hate buying in bulk like this cause it might get freezer burn if I forget to have it, yet it was too good a deal to pass and its BBQ season!
