Ah, from one of the comments posted on Jalopnik:
Mini: For the douchebag who can't afford a real BMW.
Porsche: For the douchebag that can.

It's like a no win situation for Porsche... if they win, they don't really get any props, since they're expected to win... but if they lose, they'll never hear the end of it.

Porsche's Response:
Dear Jim,
Imagine our surprise to discover our former employee, now the head of Mini,
has challenged us to a head-to-head race. As you surely know, Porsche has a
long history of racing success, with more than 28,000 wins over the last 60
years. In our early days, we pitted ourselves against the giants, so we’ve
been in your shoes.
But as you also know, Porsche doesn’t race for fame, stunts or publicity.
We race to challenge ourselves; we race to push sports car technology; we
race to translate every win on the track to our cars on the road. If you
need a reminder of our intent, please take a look at this short video:

"We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces. We also invite you to any of the thousands of tracks around the world where Porsche owners compete each weekend.”

Its never gonna happen. Porsche isnt gonna give into this when the people that buy a Mini arent the same ppl that would buy a Porsche.
It doesnt help that Mini is giving them next to no information on what the race involves other then where it will be held.
There is a go kart track in the middle of that track. If the race takes place there the Porsche will lose since its just too big to race on a track like that.

I thought one of the comments was dead-on by saying that it's a lose/lose situation for Porsche. If they beat the Mini, it's like the big bully squashing the little guy, and that's not going to win popularity contests. If Mini wins, Porsche gets embarrassed. Logical move in turning down the challenge.

MINI.
The crappiest cars made. Don't they always seem to race Land Rover to see who can be on the bottom of JD Powers lists?
And where is Porsche? Usually in a race with Lexus at the top of the list.
They should throw in a spare electric power steering pump with every MINI purchase, 'cuz chances are excellent you'll be changing yours.
this should be awesome.

I dont' know about you guys but I love Mini's "public" image as a fun, "easy going" brand/character. Even the president has that character. Thumbs up from me. Should be a fun event none the less!

It's to suck in the lemmings so the Mini doesn't go the way of the New Beetle - a fad product.

too bad porsche is now 10th brand under VW.......I love then line......"Porsche is an investment bank with a small car operation.....too bad the ex CEO was an egomaniac and almost destroyed the company....I am sure VW will make sure they keep Porsche under their thumb.......I hope they don't share too many platforms with VW or Audi...anyone remember the 914 or 924?
If you ever driven a mini, you will know regardless of price, it is one of the best handling cars period....I have a buddy with a race prepped 996 GT3 and a 09 Cooper S....and he flat out told me the mini is one of the best handling cars period...regardless of price....

That was a very classy response from Porsche but I don't think this is a publicity stunt.. It feels more like a friendly grudge between old co-workers.
Here's Mini's clever response.

Brilliance. We're all talking about it, hoping it will happen (even though we know the outcome). You can't pay for this kind of advertising.
Great response by Porsche, too.

This post is so full of nonsense, I don't even know where to start.
First of all, being FWD automatically precludes the POS Mini from qualifying from any "best handling car" awards. It might give a Civic Type R a run for its money but it is nowhere in the realm of proper RWD sports cars like a 911. The one thing the Mini has an advantage on is its short wheelbase, which gives it an advantage in tight competitive events such an autocross where grocery-getters like Hondas and M3s tend to excel at. Nevertheless, a Lotus Elise will still run rings around a Mini in this type of event.
As for the ex-CEO, Wiedelin Wiedeking almost destroying Porsche, that is a load of nonsense. He is widely credited for making Porsche the most profitable automaker in the world through his solid management strategies. Yes, Porsche makes the most profit / vehicle sold even after removing their investment income. The only fuck up was when Porsche tried to acquire VW, which resulted in a reverse takeover.
Us 911 owners don't care about where VW takes any vehicle in the Porsche lineup except for the 911 and we know that VW is not going to do anything to change the basic concept of the 911. The 911 will still always be a Porsche first and foremost.

So Hyundai came out now and challenged Mini to a race... Lets see how they respond..
They pretty much turned the tables on them. If they dont accept they are no better then Porsche. If they do and they win people will just say "oh well it was just a Hyundai"... If they do and they lose they will look bad...
Mini should have really quit while they were ahead..

Porsche will always have its Top Dog status, mini = the underdog.
Hopefully we see an upset cuz those cooper S's are pretty fun to drive.
Mini needs to hire THE STIG :D
Some say he is actually trolling this fourm but all we know is hes called the STIG

I worded that wrong.. what I meant is that if Mini doesnt accept the challenge from Hyundai then all the people that are talking shit about Porsche not accepting the challenge will have to shut up since Mini is doing exactly the same thing..

Here is what I think Porsche should do...
I think there has been a video of some 10 year old drifting a Porsche a while back..... Take that kid. Take the Porsche that Mini used. Take a Mini with a pro driver. Now send them around the Ring.
Video tape the whole thing and post the results after. Dont make any comments. Just post the video.
