Michael Jackson Has Made $1 Billion Since His Death
Posted 06.21.2010

Jackson's finances going strong...

In the year following his death, Michael Jackson's finances are anything but dead. According to Billboard, the King of Pop's estate has gained a major infusion of revenue that totals at least $1 billion.

The cash flow comes from various sources; since his death Jackson's albums have moved nine million copies in the United States while the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons have sold about 800,000 copies of their albums. Meanwhile, Jackson's songs have sold 12.9 million tracks in online sales and 1.5 million ring tones, accounting for a total of $429 million in music-related profits. The grosses of Michael Jackson's This is It DVD sales and broadcast have added another $392 million while his music publishing companies Mijac and Sony/ATV have made $130 million. Add another $35 million for licensing and touring and $31 million toward advances for album re-releases and unreleased material and the total comes in at a whopping $1.013 billion dollars.

How does 9.8 million records + 12 million online tracks + 1.5 million ring tones yield 429 million in profits? That doesn't sound right at all....

read the sentence BEFORE that and you'll see that the 9 MILLION albums and 800,000 from the jackson 5 account as most of the music-related profits

Michael was in huge debt prior to his death....the king was BALLING out of control though.

Hopefully no one is profiting from his death and all the money goes to his kids.

That still doesn't add up properly. How much is an album? Even if each album was a ridiculous price, like $100, that would still be far short of $429 million. I also seriously doubt that all $100 of that theoretical album revenue would go to the Jackson family. They are missing some information or moved a decimal point.

I did include the 9.8 million albums. It just doesn't add up. Online tracks retail for like a buck and ringtones probably about the same. That's revenue and not even what the Jackson estate would end up with after everybody else takes their share. Even if we assume, for argument's sake, that the profit from online and ringtones sales were as follows.

12.9 Million online tracks * $1 = $12.9 million
1.5 Million ringtones * $1 = $1.5 million

That means the 9 million records and 800,000 jackson 5 records made up approx. $415 million dollars in PROFIT. I'm no music industry expert but I don't think the artist gets $40 from each record sale. $4.00 maybe...

Jackson's albums have moved nine million copies in the United States

overseas sales are probably 4-5 times that amount
