A large contingent of riot police have faced off against an apparent splinter group of G20 demonstrators in downtown Toronto, as thousands march through the city in protest of this weekend's high-level summit.
CTV Toronto's Tom Hayes said that police fired tear gas as a group of black-clad protesters raged through the city's core, vandalizing businesses, burning debris and tipping over mailboxes.
"It's already starting to get ugly here," Hayes said.
In the heart of the city's financial district, a police cruiser was set on fire not far from the G20 security perimeter.
Earlier, black-clad protesters attacked a police cruiser and smashed its windshield, as other demonstrators hurled bottles and sticks at a solid line of riot police.
As police donned gas masks and mounted units rode into the city's core on horses, the black-clad protesters lit garbage on fire and tipped over recycling containers. They also smashed vehicles in and grabbed stones from nearby homes.
News media vans were also damaged, according to reports.
Earlier on Queen Street, next to the MuchMusic building, a smaller group of black-clad protesters attempted to break southward through a tight line of riot police.
As some in the crowd pelted police with water bottles, officers hit back and pushed the group northward, away from the downtown core.
Three protesters involved in the confrontation suffered injuries. According to reports from the scene, some were bleeding from the head.
Moments later, another standoff occurred a few blocks west, where protesters reportedly tossed sticks at police and chanted "let us go."
Earlier, thousands of demonstrators gathered at the Ontario legislature Saturday morning to hear speeches.
The march has forced officials to shut down many downtown subway stations and close off several main streets from traffic.
While protest organizers promised a family-friendly demonstration, a splinter group calling itself the "Get off the Fence contingent" has announced plans to break away from the main group and challenge the heavy security cordon around the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, where the G20 summit will begin Saturday afternoon.
Marchers plan to head south through the city's core on University Ave., head west on Queen St. and then north on Spadina Ave., to arrive back at Queen's Park to continue the rally.
In a news release, the splinter group said it plans to continue on to the summit site "to confront the self-proclaimed G20 leaders and the security apparatus that will have occupied our city. We will take back our city from these exploitative profiteers, and in the streets we will be uncontrollable."
The news release uses the word "militant" a number of times to describe the planned demonstration.
Around 1 p.m., two protesters were arrested near the downtown core and allegedly found with an "incendiary device." Unconfirmed reports from the scene said the pair was carrying Molotov cocktails.
As many as 10,000 people had been expected to take to the streets, but poor weather may dampen spirits.
Torontonians woke up to dark clouds and intermittent drizzle Saturday, and heavy showers carried on into the afternoon. An Environment Canada forecast predicted thunderstorms for later in the day.
On a hot and sunny day Friday, an estimated 2,000 people marched toward the security zone but were stopped by police in full riot gear. Police confirmed that two protesters were arrested, but no one was injured.
Afterward, an estimated 150 demonstrators set up a tent city at Allan Gardens to camp overnight.
CTV's Scott Laurie said despite organizers' promises of a peaceful march, many people left their children at home over fears that the protest could turn violent.
"If there is a possibility of violence, a lot of people have heeded the warnings that this could get ugly depending on what happens along the route," Laurie said from Queen's Park.
March organizer Ken Georgetti, of the Canadian Labour Congress, said there are 350 marshals that will help keep the peace.
"It will be a peaceful protest," Georgetti said. "It will be loud, but it will be peaceful."

This is the point where "protestors" go from "protesting" to "causing civil unrest".
I don't mind peaceful protestors. I have every issue in the world with these clowns who take any opportunity as an excuse to burn shit, cause mayhem and just generally do what mommy and daddy should have spanked them for when they were snot-nosed ankle-biters.

I don't get why those opposed to something have to demonstrate it so violently. It only sends the message to the public that "Hey, we are extremeists". If you want someone to listen to you, that's the last thing you want to convey.

I'm still trying to figure out what smashing windows and throwing bricks at innocent people have to do with the G20. I'm all for peaceful protests, but this shit just makes me want to change some laws about protesting. It seems like the same people who are doing this, did the same stuff at the Olympics. A lot of the people in the TV feeds seem like hippie ass kids who go to college with mommy and daddy paying for everything. They're just using bandanas and all black clothing to hide their faces.

I knew the Phil Kessel trade was bad but didn't think it would lead to riots.

Why any city would want to host this meeting is beyond me and I heard the security alone cost over a billion dollars. It's best to do this meeting in some remote area where these unemployed terrorist fucks can't go.

These events that will cost the city/province/government money will happen regardless, and with protesters disrupting it and causing vandalism is only going to cost the governemnt more to deal with, clean up and fix.
So doesn't protesting just ultimately work against them? I guess the jokes on them.

So... what are they protesting exactly? I didn't quite catch the message in between the fires and the flying brick.

Was it CTV or CBC because I seen a CBC reporter been protected by a shaved head Asian dude with gloves, lol. He didn't even look that big.
And it looks like the protesters have calmed down and "normal" people are starting shit up, they showed some cop car been set on fire by what CBC described as some "thugs" and "hooligans"

from wiki
Currently, the Heads of state of G-20 nations meet semi-annually at G-20 summits. The G-20 summits for 2010 is being held in Toronto on June 26–27 and Seoul on November 11–12. The Toronto summit has attained international notoriety for being interrupted by a splinter group of retail mall worker teenagers who identify themselves as the Black Bloc. Most of the Black Block members sport a traditional Justin Bieber style haircut which can be prominently viewed beneath their American Apparel ski-masks. Upon conclusion of the Summit, most of the Black Bloc members will return to their summer jobs at the mall, or cutting grass. Starting in 2011, G-20 Heads of State summits are scheduled to be annual.[2]

Got to admit G20 summit is fucking expensive, you'd think a meeting regarding different economies would take into account how much they're spending and what their spending is going on.

The police and protesters are strange bedfellows: when the protesters up the ante, budgets for security get increased and the protesters continue to get the attention they seek.
What I get a kick out of is that the majority of the protesters are from privileged backgrounds (i.e. white, middle-class kids) who think they know what's best for those whom they supposedly speak for (the impoverished, Palestine, discriminated minorities, etc.)

Well it's the fringe on the very far left that really fucks things up. There basically domestic terrorist like how you have far right anti-Government groups which are also domestic terrorist.
That been said tho, there are some groups on the left that I don't mind like the anti-fascist movement in the EU that goes up against neo-Nazis and there's also people in groups you see at the G8/G20 who just want to express their opinions without resorting to violence. It only takes a few to fuck things up.

So... I was there, and it was one of the craziest things I've ever witnessed. It was very peaceful in the beginning but shit hit the fan when the black-masked group turned back and marched towards the financial district.
These were all from Saturday when the police was more restrained and kinda "let" the protesters have their way around the city blocks.

I was by King & Bay when that first cop car was set on fire, but I left to go eat at Craft Burger (seriously good burger btw).
I regret not sticking around to get some pictures of the anarchy and chaos but I hadn't eaten at all since I woke up so I was super hungry....walking around for blocks didn't help either.
Absolutely the craziest thing I have ever seen..the protesters, the sheer number of cops that were there as well.
