BAD GOVERNEMENT!

The government is bad where ever you go. It's really the lesser then two evils. I for one would take the Canadian government over the American on in a second!!!

I'm really happy for all you 2010 Olympic fans. I'm gonna let you finish, but Paul Henderson had the biggest Canadian hockey goal moment of all time. In fact, the whole Russia vs Canada series from beginning to end and how the events unfolded was epic. How dirty those Russian players were. Alan Eagleson being escorted over to the Canadian hockey players' bench to ensure his safety, as he gives the Russian fans the finger.

Who's KAHA (dildo) A and CCCP?

j/k

While I realize how that series went down and how epic it was, 2010 Olympics was like...yesterday.... and in my back yard, literally. I was with my Canadian brothers, in the streets, cheering and being proud of our win.

BTW
Henderson's jersey just sold for 1.2M

My reaction was to go "yey" and crawl into a closet-sized room at the Manga Cafe I was watching the game at, at 4am after many many drinks.

Yeah, sorry about that.

Pfft! Apples and oranges! Albeit very tasty apples and oranges. :p

The '72 series was fantastic, even though I've only watched it all through videos and read it in books. However, like it's been mentioned, '10 was in my backyard and I (we!) we all able to watch it live, foibles and all, and experience everything as in unfolded. As great as the '72 Olympics were, 2010 will simply be much better, if only because I'll be able to tell my kids that I was there.

I was just reading an old article from before the Olympics started and found an interesting quote that I'd like to share:

“If Canadians have an Olympic fantasy, it’s this,” said Gary Mason, a Vancouver-based columnist for The Globe and Mail. “We’re neck and neck in the medal count and it all comes down to the final event, men’s hockey. Canada and Russia are tied, 2-2, in the third, and Sidney Crosby knocks in the winning goal in overtime.”
Source - NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/10/sports/olympics/10podium.html?pagewanted=2&%2339;s%20Unlikely%20Medal%20Quest:%20Plenty%20of% 20Gold%20&%2334;Canada&sq&st=cse&%2334;&scp=3)

Except for the Russia bit, how freakin' scarily accurate was that?

It ain't apples and oranges for me. I saw both and let me tell you, the 72 series was awesome. The Queen of England could have been assassinated and games 1 through 8 would still be on the front page of every newspaper in our country. There really was more at stake in the 72 series than just hockey in the minds of the people on both sides. Those godless commies vs the free world. I can remember the Russian players kicking our players in the end boards. Our players and the media went nuts over that one. Then there was the Russian coach throwing a tantrum and calling the players off the ice in protest over something really stupid. That was the first time anyone in NA saw that kind of tactic. Again, you had to be there. Watching old footage of the games and reading about what happened doesn't do it justice. That's why I brought it up. I'm not saying the 2010 Olympics wasn't great. The 72 series was just bigger.

Oh don't get me wrong, I completely understand. My dad has told me about his experience during those games and, while he was an American at the time, he was living in Vancouver and still tells me just how huge those games were, simply because of the whole Cold War connotations hiding behind the Olympics. He still prefers '72 over '10 and, yes, agrees that it was bigger.

Oh don't get me wrong, I completely understand.

I know.

I was in grade nine or ten at the time and the game was on during school. Everything stopped. I don't think there was a single soul not watching the game. The portable where I was watching the game in, was jam packed. The largest TVs back then were like 20 inches in size. Couldn't see worth shit if you were in the back. When Henderson scored, the portable shook like there was an earthquake. People ran out of their rooms yelling, "We won! We won!"

After the series was over, there was a big shift in popularity towards anything Russian (hockey team). Everybody was talking about Tretiak, Yakushev, and Kharlamov. They became legendary. And, the Russian national anthem...... it was awesome and terrifying all at the same time. The general public learned a lot about the godless commies. Many have said that although the scorebaord showed which side won, the series was won by both sides.
