Most of my vehicles have been V6's and I've had one V8 (350). I'll probably never get another unless its strictly for a weekend driver.

Although fun they're a hassle at the pump, which was usually daily for me at the time.

Unless they are "V-4's" which I doubt, it would actually be a inline 8. :P

not that many v8s.

with technology where it is, they are squeezing all the potential out of the v6s first.

but the low rev torque is addicting.

actually, the 4 cylinders in my 944turbo and 968 are literally 1/2 of the 928's V8 engine.

You're thinking cut in half from the top view, from side to side.

I was talking about cutting in half right down the middle of the crank from front to back.

V8 for European and Japanese cars is okay... because the engines actually make decent or good power for the V8.

but V8 for American cars is the biggest joke. Big ass 10.0L engines that have the same power output of a 4 cylinder...

Guess you never experienced "Real" torque. You know the kind that starts from idle not boost.:D
I own two V8 trucks and two 4cyl cars.
One is a 5.9 Dodge Dakota the other is a 5.7 International Scout
the four bangers are a 1 liter Nissan Pao and a 73 Celica with a MR2 supercharged 1.6.

you are probably more used to taking pictures of cars with bigger engines than actually driving them.

funny, the new Mustang GT makse more power than the Lexus ISF, same displacement, and being a ford it "probably" uses 87 octane.

Nice to see the V8's are well represented. I love pulling up next to stock or lightly modded 4 cyl cars and laughing as they rev their engines as if they have a chance of beating me off the line. I've never needed more than half throttle to beat them, haha.

The new Coyote 5.0 will probably win engine of the yr.....good power, you can use 87 octane fuel....and revs pass 7000rpms.....also from my understanding Ford did not use exotic parts to get the power either...so it will be relatively frugal to operate.....

Yeah, I'm getting about 15mpg out of my MR2T right now so I figure, I may as well get 400hp out of that 15mpg. Driving styles have changed, when I bought the MR2 10 years ago, I was able to drive it in a more relaxed manner and I could stretch the tank to 550kms before I needed a fill up. Now with everyone tail gating, pedal to the metal, I'd be lucky to get 300kms out of a tank.

Nice to see the V8's are well represented. I love pulling up next to stock or lightly modded 4 cyl cars and laughing as they rev their engines as if they have a chance of beating me off the line. I've never needed more than half throttle to beat them, haha.

V8 for European and Japanese cars is okay... because the engines actually make decent or good power for the V8.

but V8 for American cars is the biggest joke. Big ass 10.0L engines that have the same power output of a 4 cylinder...

What?.. Can you show me what current I4 N/A beats a current N/A V8?

As for V8's I don't think you know what your talking about.. american V8's are great. espeically the classics. Big Block 7L 454 pushing out 490 ft/lbs torque and 409 hp. Also with a quick wiki search there is a 9.4L V8 pushing out 720 hp 685 lb·ft. Show me a non supercar V8 that pushes out that much power without aftermarket upgrades.

Well for someone who has a supra as their avatar, I sure am amazed that you didn't mention Inline 6 rather then V6, as for 4cyl being PoS, 4G63 is a pretty damned good engine IMO. The lesson here kids, its not always about how much the engine can push out.

I won't argue with you on the V6 comment as I myself drive one. However, saying most 4-cylinder engines are pieces of shit is a bit extreme - our family has a Volkswagen with a 20V 1.8T and I love that little engine. It's got more then enough power for most people, it's pretty good on gas, and it's got ample amounts of torque for booting around town (what it's designed for). To be perfectly frank, our 1.8T hands-down destroys my V6 when it comes to in-town running around. My V6 has no real usable power except for on long back-roads, or the highway (turbo lag until 4200RPM). Again though, my car was built for top end, where the VW is built as an awesome commuter/city car.

Note: Vw is stock, other car not so much lol.

If your going to compare any 4,6 or 8 cylinder engine do so in the same generation of engineering.
IE a circa 85' 305 z28 might be a slouch now a days but it was still more powerful then a 4 cyl car of same vintage.

I know third gen camaro 305's are slow...not trying to fight that point.

They're slow because of the political ideologies that were around at the time. There was a gas shortage, and people didn't want to lug around their big blocks anymore because they cost too much. Fuel was changing, and without lead they had to drop the compression ratios. Finally, emissions standards were tacked on to the point where a 400ci motor from an 81' Chevy Van would make 185hp, and 365lbs of torque. The automakers had yet to figure out how to make emissions and performance play nice together.

IE a circa 85' 305 z28 might be a slouch now a days but it was still more powerful then a 4 cyl car of same vintage.

You bet it was.
There were a few fast cars at the time, but for the most part, the late 70's through to pretty much 1987, sucked balls for performance cars. It wasn't until the 300zx, MK3 Supra, and FC RX7 hit the market that the US makers realized people wanted speed again.

Looking at it from another perspective, although I never
lived the era, it would appear fiscal policy had a significant
part in the automotive world.

Using a fictional setting from the film "Used Cars", your
looking at a prelude to what you can say as a time when
every loan was equivalent to a credit card purchase.(Its
a very difficult film to watch but you loosen up)

It could be just a sad story of how from miners to subcontractors
to mechanics or in between how crappy things were playing catchup.

fiscal policy, indeed.

I had the chance to talk to one of the old time GM engineers, and he said that they had the technology to make a car handle back in the 60's. In fact, if you look at the geometry of a 60's Cadillac, they were perfect. Those cars could handle, and would be amazing if they didn't weigh so much. The problem was, who would buy a Cadillac if the cheaper Chevy handled the same?

So they put control arms in the small, cheap cars that caused positive camber change. When getting an alignment, the owner could choose between camber and caster, but only two degrees. They gave them weaksauce drum brakes, and peg leg diffs in order to keep the cost down. And the cars drove like isht. The proof of this is with special editions like the 64' Chevelle L79, a short run of a few cars that Chevy made. GM axed the car, because at a cost of $4500, it would compete with the Vette. Fiscal policy.

Fast forward to 2010, and I want to prove that these cars can handle, using my 67'. Technology and capitalism have teamed up to provide proper geometry for these cars. Finally!

Here's a pic of my upper control arms. 7 degrees of caster, and up to 4.5 degrees of camber.
sweetness.

http://www.pro-touring.com/~andrewb/gtov2/photo68.jpg

ps: not my exact arms, just a generic pic, and that carpet is horrible!

Guys are tossing in Watt's links in the rear, one of the oldest automotive designs on the books.

http://www.gripping.dk/img/Guy_Watts_Link.jpg

And the cars are sticking to the track like modern day Corvettes.

Physics doesn't care whether the car is old or new. All physics cares about is how much tire is getting to the pavement, and how much friction is being generated at the tire. Suspension technology has always been there. It's just been waiting for tire technology to catch up.

^ applying new or racing automotive technology to old school cars significantly improves the way a 60s or 70s muscle car turns, handles, or steers, but they do not perform like modern cars. No matter what coilovers, control arms, chassis braces, etc you apply, the frame of reference is still an old flexible chassis designed in 40-50yrs ago.

Although I respect resto rods, they are what they are, old cars that drive pretty good and cost allot of money.

All your responses do fit into the giant 'kalidoscope'.
With the recent shake up of this particular industry, I honestly
still see a glimmer of hope for enthusiasts.

Not to put Jay Leno in the spotlight, but in a recent article
he wrote that GM should rebound especially due to the fact that
they now have an ex-engineer running the show.

Using a recent book called "Drive-What Motivates Us" by Daniel Pink,
Leno's opinion could be well supported.

Essentially, the theory works in that our human brainset works on
3 operating systems.

Motivation 1.0- we must have food, water and shelter.
Motivation 2.0- reward and punishment
Motivation 2.1?- a reward system analagous to a carrot on the stick.
Motivation 3.0 and beyond- the pure joy of performing the task.

It appears that having an "engineering" based company really should
fall into a more 'advanced' operating system.

I have to say this should for now only be applied to this industry.
I'm personally quite curious to see how the factory workers overall
health currently is and will be with such a massive collective pay cut.

I'm afraid we could lose the double meaning of Cadillac if this doesn't
work. For me it will always exist.
