The home of the Vancouver Canucks will no longer be called GM Place, the team announced Tuesday morning.

General Motors will move its sponsorship activity inside the stadium, and new title sponsor for the facility will be reportedly be announced later Tuesday.

The ice rink on the edge of downtown Vancouver has been called GM Place since it opened in 1995. The team and the stadium are owned by the Aquilini Investment Group.

During the 2010 Winter Olympics the facility was temporarily renamed Canada Hockey Place to comply with Olympic guidelines.

Great fit for the canucks & their stanley cup hopes, because it takes a long ass time for rogers to answer ur call.

I would imagine that they would pay less for the naming rights given that it is going to be shortened to "Science World" and the impact on their brand would be negligible. No one really associates Science World with Telus.

Read today that BC Place is pimping out their naming rights as well. I would probably assume that Telus would now be very interested in that as an investment.

Makes sense..exposure to soccer and football fans. Plus I suspect you will see a lot more other uses for the facility once the renos are done. Open sky concert anyone? BC Place has seating for what 60k? Add to that seating on the field and you could have a concert in town enjoyed by 75k+ people.

WhiteCaps will play there. They will play against plenty of american MLS teams and I'm sure we'll get a friendly with a big Euro club once a year.
