Edward Norton will reportedly not be back as the Hulk for The Avengers, despite his self-professed eagerness to reprise his role as Dr. Bruce Banner.
According to HitFix, Marvel has decided to drop Norton and replace him with an unspecified unknown for the Avengers movie -- a lineup the studio is said to be planning to reveal at this month's San Diego Comic-Con.
The site says they're trying to determine "exactly how far apart the Marvel offer and the Norton camp are in terms of money, but even in early conversations, it sounds like a deal could be made here, and simply wasn't."
No exact reason was expressly given for Marvel's decision to not bring back Norton, but the star and Marvel had a notorious go-around while making The Incredible Hulk.
So, if these rumors pan out, what do you guys think of an unknown playing Bruce Banner in The Avengers? Sound off in the Comments below.
UPDATED: Marvel Studios sent a statement to HitFix confirming their earlier scoop that Norton will not be back for The Avengers. Marvel honcho Kevin Feige informed the site: "Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert [Downey], Chris [Hemsworth], Chris (Evans), Sam [Jackson], Scarlett [Johansson], and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

Damn that sucks. Part of the coolness of combining the characters from the different movies into one was the consistency. Also I liked Norton as Bruce Banner.
Anyone else think Chris Evans is an odd choice for Captain America?

I think Evans is actually a pretty good choice for Captain America. He's a better actor than most give him credit for.

Evans seems kinda young and immature as Captain America...
Hes a good actor but I just dont see it.
I just think it's weird because he was the human torch. Otherwise I think he'll make a good Cap. I just hope the ages of everyone is realistic

I assume they'll change captain America's look in the Avengers as the one in that poster above looks to be made for the WW2 era.
In fact I heard that the entire movie will take place in WW2 and I assume in the Avengers is when they find him frozen in the icebergs many years later.

FUCK! Very unhappy at the fact that Norton was pulled from The Avengers.
He was an excellent Bruce Banner and he was one of the key actors I wanted to see in the movie.
Terrible terrible move in my opinion. I'm extremely disappointed :(
DanHibiki
07-14-2010, 04:56 PM
Well it all started when in they were making the Hulk. Norton had some creative control over the movie and he wanted to explore the inner-struggles of Bruce Banner/Hulk while the others wanted to have more action. After this disagreement, the upset Norton refused to help promote the movie.
Then it just went down hill from there on.
I assume they'll change captain America's look in the Avengers as the one in that poster above looks to be made for the WW2 era.
In fact I heard that the entire movie will take place in WW2 and I assume in the Avengers is when they find him frozen in the icebergs many years later.
They're going with the Ultimate Universe version of Cap.

I just think it's weird because he was the human torch.
yeah, that's weird for me as well...
as long as he doesn't play Cap with the same carefree attitude that he did with the Torch.
but i'd still rather have someone else. someone with the serious attitude that Cap can have. no nonsense, kick ass, straight as an arrow, etc.

http://insideblip.com/node/587/how-i-met-your-mother-actress-joining-the-avengers.html
http://insideblip.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/pe_image/storygraphic/Cobie020911.jpg
Marvel continues to fill the ranks of its Avengers.
Actress Cobie Smulders, best known as Robin Scherbatsky on CBS’s Emmy-winning comedy “How I Met Your Mother,” has joined the cast of director Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble "The Avengers," slated to hit theaters next summer.
Smulders will play Maria Hill, an agent for the quasi-military espionage agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D and led by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Like Jackson, Smulders is likely to be contracted for a nine-movie deal that will allow the character to cross-over into multiple Marvel films.
In the comics, Hill is known for her forceful personality and a hard edge similar to that of Fury. The character ultimately takes over S.H.I.E.L.D. and features prominently in the popular “Civil War” and “Secret Invasion” storylines.
The big-budget action film will mark a change of pace for the Canadian actress who has largely worked in comedies and television appearances.
In addition to her work on “Mother,” her television appearances include “The L Word,” “Smallville,” “Andromeda,” and “Tru Calling.”
Prior to settling on Smulders, Marvel recently conducted screen tests with several actresses on the short list to play Hill. They included Morena Baccarin ("V", "Firefly"), Jessica Lucas ("Cloverfield"), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Scott Pilgrim vs. The World").
The addition of Smulders helps even the gender odds in the male-skewed cast of "The Avengers."
Alongside Jackson and Smulders, the film will see Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and Clark Gregg reprise their “Iron Man” roles as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Black Widow and Agent Coulson, respectively.
Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans, who will appear in theaters this summer as Thor and Captain America, respectively, will also star, and Mark Ruffalo will assume the role of Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk, last played onscreen by Edward Norton.
Rounding out the cast is Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Town,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Hawkeye.
“The Avengers” will hit theaters on May 4, 2012.
“How I Met Your Mother” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.

I guess you guys don't know the story.
When they made the Incredible Hulk movie there was disagreements between Marvel Studios and Norton. Norton wanted more psychological, man vs. self type scenes while Marvel wanted a more action.
Their differences lead to Norton refusing to do any type of promotion for the movie.
And I believe a year later they did settle their differences and Norton agreed to be in the Avengers movie but Marvel Studios didn't want to deal with him again. This part I'm not sure if it's true.
But ya, how cool would it have been if Norton was in it? 100% continuity in all the movies for the main characters.

Marvel is breaking the sci-fi boundary with superhero movies with the Avengers.
For the most part, superhero movies were, for the most part, limited to Earth. Those who have tried to expand to outer space failed.
X-Men was given the opportunity with Phoenix but they wussed out and went a different route.
I thought Marvel did a good job easing people in with Thor and assume they would really push it with the Skrull in The Avengers.
They could be paving a new acceptance in superhero movies with this.

One thing I am liking is that Marvel isn't wussing out at all.
The material, though slightly different isn't different for the sake of watering it down for newbs. They are staying faithful to the spirit of the material and throwing enough money at the movies to do it justice. They have taken their movies and done it in serious light, not necessarily dark like the Nolan Batman reboot, but they aren't dicking around like with Green Lantern.
It is paying for for them, big time.
I'm hoping my faith in Joss Whedon is not misplaced.

2 things bother me after watching the trailer....
1. Does hulk look like the Ang Lee hulk more than the newer norton hulk?
2. Why do the enemies look like something that came out of transformers?
DanHibiki

Actually they try to make the Hulk look like their human counterpart. If you look closely, you'll notice the Hulk's hair is a lot like Mark Ruffalo's.

So I saw it yesterday and to be honest, it was good, but wasn't that great. I would give it a 6/10.
I know it's an action movie and not expecting the best plot or anything, but I felt that they wasted a lot of time building things up when it wasn't even that great. Too much time on Hawkeye and Black Widow as oppose to the other heroes, not enough time on the Hulk. Why didn't Loki just kill everyone when he had the chance? Kill Ironman when he wasn't in his suit. Also, noticed that couldn't hear some of the dialogue due to the loud sound effects, but that wasn't a big deal.
The part where they are on the Shield Bridge and then they see the guy looking back to his computer to play pong or whatever game, not sure why they put that there. The movie had some humorous lines, but why put in things that aren't funny to try to make it funny. Thought it was stupid. Also noticed the obvious product placement of Acura and Jansport.
Anyways, maybe I was just over hyped about this movie, it's still good just thought it could of been better after all the hype and watching the Avengers cartoons etc.
Oh also the fact that since they released so many clips and trailers, it felt like I already watched most parts of the movie already

Pretty much agree with most of that
He was playing Galaga. But ya why did they have to put that in there? Hawkeye and Black Widow got way too much airtime while banner learning to control the hulk was entirely skipped over besides stark telling him he could do it :seriously:
Cap'n was good when he kinda showed his rebellious side, like later on in his stories, and using his leadership to help everyone tie in.
But all-in-all this movie could have easily been called 'Iron Man and Friends' since stark was the glue that held the movie together. Avengers was a great action movie but lost on the character development that it could have easily had.

Warning, the IMAX 3D version was sometimes a bit blurry when the camera is "panning" or moving very quickly on certain angles of some action scenes. If you're picky you may want to avoid that. But other than that the screen was crystal clear and 3D effect was decent. Movie was great. Good family fun and comic relief.

It appears that his character is signed on for a couple more Marvel movies, I'm sure one of them is the sequel to the Avengers, whether he appears as a vision or alive is unknown. A part of me is wishing that he died because his death had significant meaning in the team coming together, yet a part of me wishes that he faked his death because he was the most likeable character aside from maybe the Hulk.

really? I liked Edward Norton more and was really sad that he wasn't in The Avengers. I felt like if it wasn't for Norton, The Incredible Hulk would have been given much less attention than it did. No one was really excited for that movie seeing as the first Hulk came out 5 years before that. But Edward Norton is a big name actor and is good at grabbing your attention. I couldn't see Mark Ruffalo being in a solo movie role. But after The Avengers they will finally be looking at a Hulk sequel which is good.
Good movie, had humorous parts but lots of plotholes.
how does the hulk go from smashing everything in sight to becoming a team player all of a sudden
Was thinking the same thing. Like come on!
Damn, Thanos looked awesome at the end there. Looks just like his comicbook counterpart...from what we could see anyway.
Out of all the pre-avengers movies, I felt the Incredible Hulk had the most realistic style to it and Captain America had the most cartoony style.
I'm surprised they didn't have Cap mention Peggy, Banner mention Betty (especially since Betty plays a big role in the Hulk's life), and Thor wanting to see Jane. Like shit, he just destroyed the rainbow bridge which he knew was his only way back to her but suddenly no, Oden had some other way to get him back to Earth and he doesn't even pay her a visit at all??? I guess there wasn't much room in this movie for their personal stuff and will be saved for their own movie sequels.
Out of all the Hulk movies, which look did you like the most?

How would you like it if Cap met Peggy instead of just mentioning her?
“One of the best scenes that I wrote was the beautiful and poignant scene between Steve and Peggy [Carter] that takes place in the present. And I was the one who was like, Guys, we need to lose this. It was killing the rhythm of the thing. And we did have a lot of Cap, because he really was the in for me. I really do feel a sense of loss about what’s happening in our culture, loss of the idea of community, loss of health care and welfare and all sorts of things. I was spending a lot of time having him say it, and then I cut that.”

One thing that I thought they could of done less of, was having less of Tony Stark's face just on screen. Too many scenes of him with his computer helmet overlapping his face that I thought wasn't necessary and could of been used for other development of the plot or other characters.

[/spoiler]
i was actually expecting a scene like that but wouldn't that mean Peggy would be like 95-100 years old? Maybe have him visit her grave. But in any regard, the three films (capt. A, hulk, and Thor) had pretty important romance stories that play an important role in shaping the heroes. I was expecting SOME of this to be show in the movie but there was none. Not unless you count the brief scene where Thor asked about Jane foster.
Having capt. Visit Peggy woulda been great. It would really show just what capt. Had lost.

saw the movie last night, fucking loved it
the very last scene after the whole credits was the funniest and best way to fucking end it! and to be honest, it would be the most realistic ending.
after you save the fucking world, your gonna want a big greasy meal. Thor had that look on his face like "i fucking love earth food!"
imma definitely watch it again.
as for the whole hulk thing, yeah the incredible hulk looked more badass, but keep in mind, i think they wanted this movie to be a few or more years after everyone was recruited. so its only natural the bruce banner aged and already showed that he can control his emotions (most of the time). and if bruce ages, doesn't the hulk too? i like to think in 2003 hulk was child like, 2008 more teenage like, and 2012 adult like and finally learning to be at sync with bruce

What's amazing to me is that I tend to forget how much of these movies are CGI these days. The seamless transitions and lifelike qualities of many of the characters are amazing. Thinking on how they are all just "acting" out the fights in the green screen without any real opponent or backdrop is pretty crazy. The hyper realism of CGI is a credit to the programmers.

Well keep in mind 2003 hulk had nothing to do with the other two hulks since the 2008 was a reboot movie and not a sequel. The 2008 and 2012 hulk are supposed to be the same.
Out of all the preavenger movies I feel bad for The Incredible Hulk as its the one most people don't remember or cared for. It also seems to fit the least in this avengers universe which is why the change in the Hulk was soooo different.
Also it wasn't a few years after the movies but more like 1.

I just saw The Avengers last night...
One of the best superhero movies I've seen. And I usually don't care too much for superhero movies.
I missed out on Thor. I guess I'm going to go back and watch it now.
I was surprised with all the comical relief filled in this movie. But it worked out well.
I wonder would it have been worthwhile to watch this movie on the D-BOX thing.
Has anyone tried it?

For some reason, I really liked The Incredible Hulk. I don't know why...
I liked it maybe even better than Iron-Man. It didn't have the wow factor of Iron-Man,
yet I enjoyed it more plot-wise. And I personally don't like Stark cause he's too arrogant of a character for me. Capt. A seems kind of lame.
That being said, I don't follow these superhero story's enough to know what's "canon" and what's been changed.
So I just enjoy each movie as they are on their own.

^in a way, two totally different genre of superhero
avengers is a more comedic route
but with dark knight, it literally is a dark superhero movie. plus more believable on how a superhero struggles with both identities
dark knight is more story compelling
avengers is more "funny"
the action in dark knight is very realistic (the technology used could very well be made eventually). i guess thats why bane doesn't look like what he is in the comics.
but with avengers its definitely more comic style (technology is impossible and so is gods, aliens and a big green giant)
in the end, we all are gonna watch them both, and we all are gonna love em both

What Marvel did with the Avengers is groundbreaking. Before Avengers, most superhero movies that took the comic, less serious route failed. Those who also tried to incorporate intergalactic elements failed as well. Movies like X-Men were too afraid to even explore that option (by not following the true phoenix story) or movies that did tried to dumb it down and make it more believable but instead made it look dumbed (fantastic four with galactis).
They know that people find it hard to accept a lot of things when superheroes are displayed in real life. That's why they try to make everything as grounded in reality. The viewer only believes it if they think "I can look out the window and see this happening in THIS reality.
What Avengers did with the 5 pre-avengers movies is slowly place you into THEIR reality. Try to make you understand that, although it may be real life, things don't work the same as the reality you live in. Now with Thor, intergalactic elements is accepted. With Ironman, we understand that their reality is much more advanced and different that it is here. Captain America altered history.
When I watched the Avengers I couldn't help but feel like it was an episode of the Avengers cartoon. It felt VERY much like a cartoon/comic. This could change the way super movies are done and now we could see things in movies that producers wouldn't even consider years ago.
I mean look at the end of the movie. They got freaken Thanos as the next villain for Pete's sake! He is REALLY out there! Hell I'm not even sure it could work right now but I guess we'll see. I assume the next batch of solo movies will aim at broadening our horizon even more.
Anyways I typed all this on my phone and never went back to check my post so sorry if it made no sense.

In April 2012, despite Ruffalo being on board to play the Hulk in the sequel, Feige confirmed to Collider that Marvel had "no plans right now to do another Hulk [movie]. Hulk might be just the special guest in Avengers movies, who knows?"[110] However in a Q and A session, Feige and Ruffalo confirmed that discussions are underway to produce another Hulk movie due to positive audience response to Ruffalo's performance in The Avengers.[111], that a sequel might be possible in the future, [112] and that Mark Ruffalo had signed on for six Marvel films."

Watched it at 10:45 last night, not busy at all, as if you were watching an average movie. Then again, it was a Thursday and not Saturday.
As for my take on the movie; Joss Whedon made it fucking awesome to watch. Has his usual style of one-liners during action scenes to keep it from being too tense and serious. Not sure how much of it was the actors making their changes to the script, though The entire scene with Iron Man waking up after plunging from the portal was entirely Robert Downey Jr. according to an article on Entertainment Weekly. Apparently it went from one "So, what's next?" to a whole four page script, which was then edited for the movie

That and Cap Am: ...and Hulk, smash. killed it lol. Did anyone else notice Iron Man reflecting beams off of Cap Am's shield? It barely showed up in one scene as it panned towards the rooftops to show what Hawkeye was up to. Not sure if it was in the comics (pretty sure it would be) but it definitely was one of the joint attacks that you could do in the Ultimate Alliance games. The little details that went into this are amazing

As for the movie, it was great. Hawkeye and Black Widow feel like they don't belong though, when Thanos comes in the mix, WTF can these two even do? The balance of power in the team is a little strange, not the best mix of Avengers from the comics IMHO.

I probably rate the movie 6.5-7/10. Something along 3rd Transformers movie.
I just hated Captain America's suit. In the First Avengers, it had this more rugged look. Now it looks like a jumpsuit, even worse than Spiderman's.
And he's called Capt for a reason, because he has leadership qualities. He looked lost in the movie, and the times he's giving out commands, it sounded weak, as trying to prove that he can at least do something.
edit:
Now I know why I hate it even more, it looks exactly like the costume that he was wearing in the first movie when he was doing some cheerleading shit.

I also wish they based his suit more closely to the Ultimates universe variations:

I just think the main problem was the costume was too sleek and it made him look skinnier than he was in Captain America: The first Avengers. That or he lost weight before the movie?
Also his helmet was just shaped really oddly and they covered up the ears. But they still made it pretty damn close to the actual costume universe.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xYzAV9pEgxw/TjdkpM8MGwI/AAAAAAAAAS4/aqUhgWLU-7o/s1600/Captain-America-stills-the-first-avenger-captain-america-19095734-1279-1560.jpg
My guess is the ww2 outfit is looser and has bigger shoulder pads making him look bigger.
Hopefully the tweak it quite a bit for the next movie to make him look bigger.

I thought he did an OK job in portraying Cap in the first movie.
I kind of understand what the director's trying to do, to portray his inner struggle coming into the modern world, hence, looking lost at times, but the moment he puts on the Avengers' suit, hard to take him seriously.
Particularly in this movie, he just doesn't have that demeanor of a well-respected and confident war hero.
The movie was still enjoyable, but too much Stark, and for a god, Thor doesn't display a lot of god-power.

- as mentioned above, I noticed the director tried to balance out the heroes but Thor was definitely "nerfed" so that he wasn't very Godlike ... Iron Man had lots of run time which was good and bad because he was entertaining, Widow is HAWT but useless as is Hawkeye lol ...

These were grabbed from another forum but I think that it would somewhat explain the Hulks change of heart.
First time = instinctual survival transformation. When Hulk comes to he just knows that he was in danger and nothing else. He sees the only possible threat that could have triggered him is Black Widow. Therefore, in his mind, he had to eliminate the only possible threat. The fact that Loki was mentally influencing the whole team just before hand doesn't help much either.
Second = Intentional transformation in which Hulk has no reason to just attack. Banner triggering Hulk is unforced and therefore Hulk isn't in pure instinct mode. He can therefore judge his surroundings and decide what is a threat to him and what is a help to him.
I totally thought the first Hulk out his mind was being messed with by Loki and that staff , it was making them all want to fight each other and Loki targeted Hulk to destroy the team and the ship . At one point Banner even picked up the staff without even knowing it so you know he was being controlled . Hulks being uncontrollable may have had a little to do with the explosion and how he changed but I thought it had a lot more to do with Loki messing with his mind .
