: My car hates summer... need help!

My car dies on itself every time the weather gets hot..
Mainly because my radiator fan goes on due to the engine temperature...
once the radiator fan goes on, my RPM drops as if the engine was choking on something and dies...

Could it be the followings?
-spark plug
-fuel pump
-fuel filter
-fuel injectors
-radiator fan too old??

any ideas? i gota fix this... its rly pissing me of
any help would b great help :)

ps: when i blast AC, my car runs fine... only happens when the car is stationary w/ the radiator fan blasting...

Your e-fan is creating a large draw on your electrical system, which puts a heavier load on the alternator - thus requiring more power from the engine at idle. Basically, you need to figure out how to compensate for this larger load.


The reason why it doesn't die when the AC is on is due to the engine compensating for the added load of the AC compressor turning on. If you removed the AC belt, then turned the AC on inside, you'd see your engine idle increase by about 200 RPM.


Anyways, there's probably a sensor or some relay for your electrical fan that's given out (assuming it's a stock e-fan). Check out the ELECTRICAL side of the e-fan and all of it's components.

A volt/multimeter, set to ~20 volts, hot wire on the alternator power wire, cold wire on a ground.

new engines tend to not have a manual idle control, so you can't really change anything...

but it should have a system called ELD (Electrical Load Detector) like the ones found in Hondas. It sounds like that's broken so you have no idle-up when the fan is blowing (A/C has its own idle up module, at least I would think so)

Something along those lines. Since you have no problem starting the car or keep it running otherwise I would guess the alternator is doing its job....just that the RPM isn't catching up to the electrical draw.

cold start = 1.3-1.5k rpm
normal 900-1000 rpm
hot *which requires the fan to blow* 600-0

How does the car drive when this happens. Is the car overheatting. What is the temp gauge reading. The ecu might be in a limp mode because the car is overheating. Any recent work to the cooling system?

the car runs fine. the temp gauge is always at the half bar.
im 99% sure the engine isnt overheating...
coolant flush was done approx 2 yrs ago

a friend of mine told me to check the amp output on the alternator...

Go to lordco (or whatever) and pick-up a cheap multi-meter; it'll be about $15.
