I guess kinda in a good direction, but according to the site no d700 upgrade this year. D90 should look intresting though.

The new features on the D3100 give a good sense of what the next few dSLRs from Nikon will be like, and that's certainly exciting for a lot of people. For me, though, the lenses that are coming are more interesting and I'm definitely keeping an eye on that 24-120/4 VR lens which a lot of us Nikon shooters have been dying to get for our film/FX cameras.
Good job Nikon!

the 4th lens is a DX 55-300 VR lens that I don't quite understand the purpose of - you have a 55-200 and a 70-300 already, why this lens? Oh well.
It's very interesting to see how Nikon's 24-120 and 28-300 are so much smaller than Canon's equivalent... let's hope the optical performance will be the same, or better.
Now sign me up for one of those 85/1.4s and 24-120/4s! :)

also consumer lenses are their BNB in terms of profit. Nikon did not do very good through the recession. Even though they were leading camera sales. What fucked them was their medical imaging division I believe and their microswitches.

I've been fighting debt for a while, I just havn't been working as much as school has bogged me down, and I've quit a job that was paying 1k a week, so my income has gone to the shits.
D3100 uses the same sensor as Sony NEX

The 28-300 looks amazing! Will that be the killer lens for full frames? Full frame gets a versatile equivalent of the 18-200 on the DX..
I think the 28-300 will become the ultimate travel lens.
My future travel kit--> 28-300 VR+50mm F1.4... :D
But I might check on Tamron's 28-300, the Nikon one is like 710G?!? A hefty lens for its intention.

You mean Nikon D3100 right? Of those 2, hands down the D3100. Even though it's an entry level camera, it's currently the "best" DX format Nikon makes right now, though this will surely change in the next couple of weeks.

not bad for the price, but the video isn't that great compared to canon 60D/7D/T2i

Presumably the new 55-300 lens will mean the 70-300mm one is going to be phased out?
I'm actually pretty excited about the new 55-300mm VR... I have the 55-200 right now and I'm itching for more telephoto capabilities, so I'll probably sell it and buy the new 55-300 as an alternative. Looks like it will be about $400?
It also means the 70-300 lens will probably drop in price....

More like the 55-200 VR will be phased out. The 70-300mm VR is a FX lens, while the 55-300 VR is DX.

Oh. I see. Doesn't the 70-300 work with both DX and FX?

I am just wondering since this has been out awhile, is this still a nice entry level DSLR camera to buy?
I am use to a point and shoot and want a upgrade and have read lots of reviews on the D3100. I just wanted some opinions from people on this site and there thoughts as to what they think about the D3100.
Thanks

^ I personally don't like the D3100.
I'd only buy it, if you like the SIZE of it. It's a very very small camera. If you're interesting in a camera that's somewhat more substantial and you KNOW that you will commit to photography a little bit, get a used D90.
If you're SURE you just want some snapshots and you have no interest in photography, just want to make some nice images here and there without thinking too much about buying lenses, etc, the D3100 is a good camera.

^ I am more a part time photography person. So thats why I am looking for a step up from point and shoot but not one thats going to break the bank and not be so tecky to understand. I wouldnt buy lens's I would probably just be happy with what comes with the camera. I understand that if I was more fully into it like you then the D90 would be a better option. Its more a side hobby then a full time hobby.

Well in that case.. D3100 would be fine. Or the D3000. Or a D60/D40/D40x
Check cl for a d40. You could probably find one for ~250 and hold it's own against the other entry level dslrs - video.
